The best backpack for a Ladakh road trip
The best backpack for a Ladakh road trip is a 35 to 45 litre travel or trekking pack with a hip belt, a rain cover and dust-resistant fabric, paired with a 15 to 20 litre daypack for sightseeing at high altitude. Roads are rough, guesthouses often have stairs and parking can be far from the door, so a backpack is far easier to manage than a suitcase.
A Ladakh road trip, whether you fly into Leh or drive from Manali or Srinagar, involves long days in a vehicle, stops at monasteries and passes, cold mornings and nights, bright sun and plenty of dust. Your bags need to protect your clothes from dust, keep warm layers within reach and survive being tied to a roof rack or squeezed into a taxi boot.
This guide covers bag choice and a practical packing list for women travelling to Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong, Tso Moriri and similar high-altitude routes, including Spiti.
Ladakh's beauty comes with genuine challenges. Altitude, cold, sun and long distances mean your gear must be reliable. Choosing the right bags and packing them well removes one layer of stress, leaving you free to enjoy the landscapes.

Main backpack: size and features
Thirty-five litres works for a seven to ten day trip if you pack carefully. Forty to 45 litres gives more room for bulky down jackets, thermals and sleeping gear if you are camping.
A hip belt matters, because you may carry the bag on uneven paths to camps or guesthouses. Look for padded S-curved straps and a sternum strap.
Choose dark, tough fabric that hides dust. A rain cover protects against both rain and dust when the bag is on a roof carrier. A front U-zip or clamshell opening makes it easier to find clothes without unpacking everything.
Avoid very light-coloured bags, which turn grey with dust within a day. Charcoal, olive, navy and black are ideal. Compression straps help reduce bulk when you wear your heavy jacket and the bag is less full.
Daypack for high-altitude sightseeing
A 15 to 20 litre daypack carries water, snacks, a warm layer, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, a cap, medicines and a camera. You will use it at Khardung La, Pangong and every monastery stop.
Light weight matters at altitude, where even small loads feel heavier. Choose a pack with a padded back, a chest strap and side bottle pockets.
A foldable daypack that packs inside your main bag saves space on the drive.
Altitude makes everything harder, including carrying a bag. At around 4,000 to 5,000 metres, even a light daypack feels heavier, so pack only what you need for the day. Your driver's vehicle can hold extras.
A hydration bladder or two bottles in side pockets makes it easier to keep drinking water, which matters a great deal at altitude. Sip regularly rather than waiting until you are thirsty.
Choose a daypack with a stiff enough back that it does not collapse when you set it on a rock or a car bonnet for photos. Small details like that make a difference when you stop a dozen times a day.
Protecting belongings from dust and cold
Pack clothes in packing cubes or zip bags to keep fine dust out. Keep electronics in sealed pouches, and carry a microfibre cloth for camera lenses and sunglasses.
Cold affects batteries. Keep phones and power banks in an inner pocket or close to your body at night and on passes.
Use a rain cover or a large dust bag if your backpack goes on a roof carrier. Wipe the bag down each evening.
Nights in Pangong and Tso Moriri camps can be very cold, even in summer. Keep a warm layer, socks and a cap in a small pouch at the top of your main pack so you can reach them as soon as the sun drops.
If you carry contact lenses, keep spare glasses too. Dust and dry air can irritate eyes, and lens solution can thicken in the cold.
Women's packing list for Ladakh
Clothing: thermal innerwear, two or three warm layers such as fleece and a light down jacket, a windproof outer layer, two pairs of trousers, quick-dry tops, woollen socks, a warm cap, gloves and a scarf or buff for dust.
Footwear: sturdy walking shoes or sneakers with good grip, and sandals or slippers for guesthouses.
Health: altitude medication only on medical advice, a personal first-aid kit, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, moisturiser, eye drops, sanitary products and wet wipes. Hydration is critical; carry a reusable bottle.
Documents and money: ID, permits as required, printed bookings and cash, as ATMs and card machines may be limited in remote areas.
Many women like to carry a light, long-sleeved kurta or tunic for monastery visits, along with a scarf. It is respectful, protects against the sun and fits easily into the daypack.
Also pack a small torch or headlamp, as power cuts are common in remote camps and guesthouses, and a few zip-lock bags for rubbish, since bins can be scarce on the road.
Bike trips vs car trips
On a motorcycle trip, your main bag usually travels in a support vehicle or saddle bags. Carry a small, close-fitting backpack of 10 to 15 litres on the bike with water, a layer and essentials. A large pack on your back while riding is tiring and unsafe.
On a car or SUV trip, the main backpack goes in the boot or on the roof, and the daypack stays with you in the cabin.
If you are a pillion rider, a small tank bag or a waist pack can be more comfortable than a backpack. Discuss luggage with your tour operator before the trip, as most group bike tours include a support vehicle for main bags.
Packing your backpack for the road
Heavy items such as shoes and toiletries go at the bottom and close to your back. Warm layers go on top, so you can grab them at a cold pass. Keep a separate small bag for the night's essentials so you do not unpack fully at each stop.
Leave space for a few purchases, such as pashmina shawls or local handicrafts, or carry a foldable tote.
Unpacking fully at each stop wastes time and energy at altitude. A simple 'overnight cube' with sleepwear, a change of innerwear, toiletries and chargers means you only take one item out each evening.
Keep your daypack packed the night before each drive, with water, snacks, sunscreen, a warm layer and medicines. Early starts are common on Ladakh itineraries, especially for Khardung La and Pangong, and having the bag ready means you can step out into the cold morning without scrambling.
On the return journey, pack souvenirs such as apricot jam, pashmina and prayer flags in the middle of the main pack, wrapped in clothes, so they survive rough roads and baggage handling.
Leather or designer backpacks in Ladakh?
It is better to leave leather and delicate designer backpacks at home for this trip. Dust, cold, rough handling and roof racks are hard on fine materials. A practical nylon travel or trekking pack, plus a stylish crossbody for cafes in Leh, is the smarter combination.
Leh town has charming cafes, markets and bakeries. A crossbody sling or small tote is perfect for wandering, while your main backpack stays at the hotel. A pair of sunglasses and a cap complete a practical, stylish look.
Final checks before you go
Weigh your packed bag; many domestic flights to Leh typically follow standard check-in and cabin limits, so confirm with your airline. Test the backpack on a long walk at home. Pack medicines and documents in your daypack. Then enjoy one of India's most spectacular journeys.
Acclimatise in Leh for at least a day or two before heading to high passes, as health advisories commonly recommend, and consult a doctor before travel if you have any medical conditions. Pack accordingly and carry your medicines in your daypack.
With the right backpack system, a Ladakh road trip becomes easier and safer, leaving you free to enjoy the vast landscapes, blue lakes and quiet monasteries.
