Bali trip luggage: the short answer
For a Bali trip of six to eight days, take a medium soft weekender or a 60 to 65 cm spinner plus a beach tote and a small backpack. Bali villas in Ubud and Seminyak often involve steps, stone paths and gravel driveways, and day trips to Nusa Penida mean boat rides, so luggage you can carry briefly is more important than wheels.
Bali is one of the most popular honeymoon and girls'-trip destinations for Indian travellers, with flights typically connecting through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok, or direct on some routes. Allowances vary by airline and connection, so pack to the lowest limit on your journey.
Think breezy outfits for photos, practical layers for sunrise treks, and a modest outfit for temple visits. Bali rewards a pretty, light wardrobe more than a large one.
Before you pack, map your accommodation. Many Bali itineraries split the stay between Ubud for culture and rice terraces, and a beach area such as Seminyak, Uluwatu or Nusa Dua. Each move involves a car ride of one to two hours and a fresh round of carrying bags to your room, so a lighter bag makes every transfer quicker.

Why villas change your luggage choice
Private pool villas are the heart of many Bali itineraries. Beautiful as they are, many sit at the end of narrow lanes or across rice fields, with stairs carved into hillsides in Ubud. Drivers carry bags to the gate, but often not to your room.
A soft weekender or wheeled duffle of 50 to 65 litres is easy to carry for those last fifty metres. If you prefer a spinner, keep it medium and choose large wheels; gravel and stone paths are hard on small casters.
Villas also tend to have open wardrobes and humid air. Packing cubes help keep clothes organised and away from damp, and a few silica gel sachets in your bag keep leather items fresh.
Ask the villa whether staff can meet you at the gate to help with bags. Most will, and it makes arrival smoother, especially with a medium spinner. If you are a couple, two soft weekenders that you each carry are often easier than one large suitcase that needs two people on narrow paths.
What to pack for Bali
Bali is warm and humid year-round, with a rainy season roughly from November to March. Pack flowy maxi dresses, linen shorts, cropped tops, co-ord sets, two or three swimsuits, a kaftan cover-up and lightweight trousers. White, pastels and earthy tones look stunning against Bali's green landscapes.
Footwear: flat sandals, sneakers or trekking sandals for waterfalls and the Mount Batur sunrise trek, and dressy wedges for a beach club. Carry a light fleece or jacket for early-morning treks and cooler nights in Ubud and Kintamani.
Add a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, reef-friendly sunscreen, insect repellent and a quick-dry towel. A light rain jacket is useful in the wet season.
For the Mount Batur sunrise trek, which usually starts in the early hours, pack leggings, a breathable tee, a fleece, a windcheater, a headlamp or phone torch and trekking sandals or sneakers with grip. It is cold at the summit before dawn and warm by mid-morning, so layers you can stuff into a small backpack are essential.
Temple visits and sarongs
Temples such as Uluwatu, Tanah Lot, Tirta Empul and Besakih expect visitors to wear a sarong and sash, which are often provided or available to rent at the entrance. Covering shoulders is respectful. Carrying your own sarong is hygienic and makes a lovely photo prop.
Tirta Empul's water purification ritual means getting wet, so pack a change of clothes and a dry bag. At Uluwatu, monkeys are notorious for grabbing sunglasses, hats and phones; keep them inside a zipped bag.
A crossbody with a full zip and a secure clasp is the ideal temple bag. Avoid dangling accessories and open totes.
For Tirta Empul, consider a swimsuit under a light dress and a quick-dry towel in your dry bag, so you can change quickly afterwards. Also keep small cash for donations and sarong rental. Remember that temple rules may restrict entry for women during menstruation at some sites; respect local customs and ask your guide if unsure.
Nusa Penida and Gili day trip bags
Fast boats to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan or the Gili Islands usually require wading in shallow water to board. Wear water-friendly sandals, roll up your trousers and carry a 15 to 25 litre backpack rather than a tote.
Pack a dry bag for your phone and camera, a towel, swimwear, sunscreen, cash and a snack. Roads on Nusa Penida are rough, and viewpoints like Kelingking Beach involve steep paths, so sneakers with grip are wise.
If you are staying overnight on an island, take only a small weekender and leave your main bag with your hotel in Bali.
For Gili Islands day trips or overnight stays, transport on the islands is mainly bicycles and horse carts, with no cars. A backpack is far easier than a wheeled bag on sandy lanes. Pack light, with a swimsuit, two outfits and toiletries, and use your hotel's luggage storage in Bali for the rest.
Honeymoon and beach club outfits
Bali honeymoons often include floating breakfasts, candle-lit dinners, swing photo shoots in Ubud and beach clubs in Seminyak or Canggu. Pack a couple of statement dresses, satin or linen, that photograph well, and a light cover-up for dinner by the beach.
Carry a small clutch or mini bag for dinners and beach clubs. Many beach clubs have pool areas where a waterproof pouch inside your clutch keeps your phone safe.
Fold statement dresses in tissue and roll them in packing cubes; satin and silk crease in humidity, so a travel steamer or hanging them in a steamy bathroom helps.
Photographers on Bali swing and nest shoots often recommend bright, flowing dresses that move in the breeze. Long red, yellow or white dresses photograph beautifully against green rice terraces. Keep one aside, folded carefully at the top of your bag, specifically for those morning shoots in Ubud before the crowds arrive.
Cabin baggage and connections
If your route connects through another hub, cabin limits on the two legs can differ. Pack to the stricter limit, often around 7 kg in economy, and check each airline's dimension rules.
Keep a swimsuit, a change of clothes, medicines and basic toiletries in your cabin bag, in case your checked luggage misses the connection. Many travellers have spent the first evening of a Bali trip waiting for bags; the right cabin kit lets you enjoy the pool instead.
Bali's arrival process may include a tourist levy and customs declaration; check current requirements before you travel.
Bali's humidity means anything packed slightly damp can smell musty within days. On the last day, pack swimwear in a separate waterproof pouch and keep it away from dry clothes. A small travel-size fabric spray keeps everything fresh until you reach home.
Check visa-on-arrival or e-visa requirements for Indian passport holders before you fly, and keep printed copies with your cabin documents. Rules change, and a quick check at booking saves anxiety at the immigration counter in Denpasar after a long connecting journey.
Choosing luggage for Bali
Prioritise carryability and water resistance. A coated nylon weekender, a wheeled duffle or a medium spinner with large wheels from brands such as Samsonite, Mokobara, Nasher Miles or Caprese, starting from around ₹5,000 for good quality, suits Bali well.
Add a woven beach tote, a crossbody and a mini clutch, and you have a complete Bali bag wardrobe.
Browse our luxury travel bags and pick pieces that also work for Thailand, Maldives or Goa trips.
If you love leather, choose a coated or treated leather crossbody for Bali and leave delicate suede and nubuck at home. Humidity and sudden rain are hard on untreated leather, while coated leather, nylon and canvas cope well with the tropical climate.
A neutral weekender in tan, olive or cream also photographs beautifully in villa entrances and on pool decks, which matters to many honeymooners documenting the trip, and ages gracefully over years of beach holidays.
