Bandana hairstyles: the basics
The easiest bandana hairstyles are the folded bandana headband, the triangle kerchief tied under the hair at the nape, a bandana knotted around a ponytail and a bandana woven into a braid. Start with a 50 to 55 cm square cotton bandana, fold it into a strip or triangle, and tie securely over an elastic or under your hair.
Bandanas are a summer and festival staple, and they solve bad-hair days, sweaty scalps and second-day roots. They are also inexpensive, usually from about ₹99 to ₹299 for cotton paisley prints. Here is how to wear them in ways that look current in 2026.
They also make a quick fix for days when there is no time to wash or style hair. A bandana hides second-day roots, a growing-out fringe or flat hair in seconds, while adding colour to a plain outfit.
Below, we go from folding basics to headbands, kerchiefs, ponytails, braids and short-hair options, then finish with fabrics and common mistakes.

Folding a bandana: strip vs triangle
Almost every bandana style starts with one of two folds. For the strip fold, lay the bandana flat as a diamond, fold one corner to the opposite corner to make a triangle, then fold from the long edge in 4 to 5 cm sections until you have a long band. Use this for headbands and ponytail wraps.
For the triangle or kerchief fold, simply fold the square in half diagonally. This covers more of the head and creates the retro, slightly Y2K kerchief look. A larger 60 to 70 cm scarf works better for kerchiefs if you have thick hair.
Iron the bandana flat before folding; crisp folds look neat, while crumpled ones look careless.
Bandana headband styles
Classic headband: slide the folded strip under your hair at the nape, bring the ends up to the top of the head and knot twice, tucking the tails in or letting them stand up for a rockabilly bow. Place it 3 to 5 cm behind the hairline.
Front-knot headband: tie the strip at the nape under your hair instead, then lay the band across the crown. The knot hides beneath hair and the front looks smooth, ideal for office-casual days. Pull a few strands loose at the front to soften it.
Bandana with bangs: leave your fringe out in front of the band. It is a cute look that keeps the rest of the hair off the face during humid days.
Another quick option is the twisted bandana headband: twist the folded strip along its length before tying. The rope texture holds more securely on silky hair and looks slightly more polished.
The triangle kerchief look
Fold the bandana into a triangle, place the long edge across your hairline or slightly behind it, and bring the two side corners to the back, tying them under your hair at the nape over the third corner. Let open hair flow from underneath.
For a 2026 coastal-girl version, tie the kerchief over loose waves with sunglasses on, perfect for beach holidays in Goa or Gokarna. For a more polished take, tie it over a low bun. Silk or satin kerchiefs look dressier than cotton bandanas and pair well with linen co-ords.
Tip: secure the front edge with two small bobby pins behind the ears so it does not slide back.
Bandana ponytails, buns and braids
Ponytail wrap: tie a high or low pony with an elastic, then wrap the strip-folded bandana over the elastic and knot or bow it, leaving tails hanging. It is a quick upgrade for casual days.
Bandana bun: make a top bun, then wrap the strip around its base and tie a small knot with tails sticking out. This keeps buns secure in heat and looks fun at music festivals and college fests.
Braided bandana: tie a thin strip at the nape, divide hair into three and braid the bandana in as one strand or alongside two strands. The pattern weaves through your braid for a playful, boho effect.
For a sweet half-up version, tie the top section at the crown and knot a slim bandana strip over the elastic with short tails sticking out. It is one of the quickest bandana hairstyles and works on medium and long hair alike.
Low pigtails tied with two small bandanas are another festival favourite, especially with denim shorts and a crop top.
Bandana hairstyles for short hair
Short bobs and pixie cuts suit the classic headband and the front-knot band. A thinner strip, around 3 cm, looks proportionate on short hair. The kerchief also works beautifully on bobs, framing the face as the hair peeks out below.
For very short hair, tie the bandana as a full head wrap: triangle fold, cover the head, tie at the nape, then bring the ends back up and knot on top. It is practical on hot days and stylish with oversized shirts.
Use bobby pins to keep a band from sliding on short, slippery hair, crossing them behind the ears.
With a pixie cut, a slim bandana tied low across the forehead and knotted at the nape gives a sporty, 90s-inspired look that pairs well with oversized tees and sneakers.
Choosing bandana fabric, print and colour
Cotton is the classic and breathes well in Indian summer heat, absorbing a little sweat. Silk and satin square scarves create a dressier look and are gentler on hair. Paisley prints in red, navy and black are the traditional choice; pastels, gingham and floral prints feel fresh for 2026.
Pair a red paisley bandana with denim and a white tee, a navy one with striped shirts, and a pastel floral scarf with summer dresses. For Gen Z styling, mix print bandanas with graphic tees and cargo pants.
Wash cotton bandanas after a few wears, as they absorb oil and sweat from the scalp.
Bandana looks for Indian summers and travel
In peak summer, a cotton bandana is practical as well as pretty. It soaks up a little sweat at the hairline, keeps hair off the forehead and protects the parting from the strong afternoon sun, which can burn the scalp along the part line. Pair a folded bandana headband with a high bun for errands, outdoor markets and day trips.
For travel, a bandana is one of the most packable accessories. One square can work as a headband, a ponytail tie, a neck scarf on a cool evening and even a bag accent tied around a handle. Choose a neutral print like navy paisley or black-and-white gingham so it goes with everything in your suitcase.
On hill-station trips in cooler weather, tie a kerchief over loose hair with a denim jacket, and on beach holidays use a bandana as a headwrap to keep salty wind from tangling your hair. Rinse it out in the evening and it will be dry by morning.
Lastly, do not wear the same cotton bandana for days without washing it; sweat and product build-up can irritate the forehead and scalp.
Bandana styling mistakes
Tying it too tight is the most common mistake; it causes headaches and leaves marks on the forehead. Knot firmly, not tightly, and use pins for security. Folding too wide on a small face can overwhelm features; adjust strip width to your face size.
Wearing a bandana with an equally busy outfit can look cluttered. Keep clothes simpler when the bandana is printed. Also avoid placing a cotton band directly on freshly oiled hair, as the oil stains the fabric and the band slips. Style on clean or lightly dry-shampooed hair.
