Cabin bag size in litres: the quick answer
A typical 55 cm cabin bag holds between about 30 and 42 litres, with most hard shells around 33 to 38 litres and soft or expandable bags reaching 40 litres or more. For a weekend, 25 to 35 litres is ample; for a week of carry-on-only travel, aim for 38 to 42 litres within your airline's size limit.
Litres are a more useful measure of capacity than the size label, because two bags with the same height can hold different volumes depending on depth, wall thickness and design.
This guide explains how to read litres, what fits, and how to choose.
Many shoppers focus on the label, such as 55 cm or small, without realising that capacity can vary by ten litres or more between two bags that both pass airline sizers. Understanding litres helps you choose a bag that fits your wardrobe, not just the bin.

How litres relate to dimensions
Volume equals length times width times depth. A box measuring 55 x 35 x 25 cm has a gross volume of about 48 litres. But wheels, handle tubes, shell thickness and lining reduce usable volume, so a cabin bag of that size typically offers 33 to 40 litres of packing space.
Brands usually quote usable capacity, but methods vary. Some include pockets; some include expansion. Compare closely.
A deeper bag offers more litres than a taller one, but may exceed depth limits.
As an example, a 55 x 40 x 20 cm bag also has a box volume of about 44 litres, while a 55 x 35 x 23 cm bag is around 44 litres too. Yet one might be more practical than the other because width suits folded clothes and depth suits shoes and bulky knitwear. Volume tells you how much; shape tells you how well.
Wheel style matters as well. Spinner wheels sit outside the main body and use part of the permitted height, which reduces interior volume compared with a 2-wheel design with recessed wheels. That is why 2-wheel cabin bags often quote a few more litres at the same external size.
What 30, 35 and 40 litres hold
Around 30 litres holds a two to three-day wardrobe: a few tops, two bottoms, a dress, sleepwear, underwear, a pair of shoes and a toiletry pouch. Around 35 litres stretches that to four or five days or adds a formal outfit. Around 40 litres supports a week with careful packing and a capsule wardrobe.
Bulky items such as winter jackets or heels eat litres quickly. Wear them on the plane if possible.
Packing cubes help you use litres efficiently and see how much you have packed.
A practical example for a four-day Goa trip: three tops, two pairs of shorts, a maxi dress, a swimsuit and cover-up, sleepwear, underwear, sandals and a toiletry pouch fit comfortably into about 30 litres, leaving space for a light jacket and a sun hat. For a four-day work trip to Delhi in winter, the same volume is tighter because of knitwear and boots.
Saree and lehenga packing deserves a mention. A silk saree folded flat takes little volume but needs a flat, wide space to avoid creases, while a lehenga with a heavy skirt may need 8 to 10 litres alone. If you travel to weddings, choose a cabin bag with a broad flat interior or plan for a check-in bag.
Litres versus weight
More litres does not mean you can carry more if your airline limits weight to around 7 kg. A 40-litre bag filled with dense items can easily exceed that. Litres help when your items are light but bulky, like knitwear.
Choose capacity based on your typical packing density. If you pack lots of cotton and linen, more litres help. If you pack heavy items like shoes and electronics, weight will limit you first.
A lightweight bag gives you more of your allowance for contents.
A quick rule of thumb: most people's packed clothing weighs roughly 150 to 200 grams per litre. On that basis, 35 litres of clothes could weigh 5 to 7 kg, which is right at the edge of many cabin allowances once you add the bag's own weight. That is why light bags and smart packing matter as much as capacity.
Hard vs soft litres
Soft bags can claim higher litres because their pockets and walls flex. Hard shells offer fixed, predictable capacity. Expandable bags quote both closed and expanded volumes.
For cabin use, consider the closed volume, as you should fly with expansion closed.
External pockets add convenient but not always usable volume.
Hard-shell clamshells split capacity into two halves, so a 36-litre shell may effectively be two 18-litre compartments. That is great for separating clean and worn clothes but less flexible for bulky items such as a winter coat, which might fit more easily in a single-compartment soft bag of the same volume.
Choosing litres by trip type
Weekend city breaks: 25 to 35 litres. Business trips of two to three days: 30 to 35 litres with a laptop tote. Week-long carry-on-only holidays: 38 to 42 litres. Wedding trips: consider a check-in bag or a hard shell with a garment section.
If you take mixed trips, a 35 to 38-litre cabin bag is a versatile middle ground.
Add a personal item of 15 to 25 litres for essentials.
Business travellers who prefer a single bag can choose a 35 to 38-litre front-pocket trolley and skip the separate laptop bag. Leisure travellers who love to shop should stick to around 35 litres outbound and use an expander or a foldable tote for the return.
Families travelling with children may find two 30-litre bags easier than one larger bag, because each adult can wheel one and lift it alone. Consider the number of travellers and the number of hands, not just the total litres.
Reading listings correctly
Check external dimensions including wheels, closed and expanded litres and empty weight. If litres are not stated, estimate from dimensions but expect usable space to be around 70 to 80 percent of the box volume.
Compare bags at the same size. A bag claiming unusually high litres may include pockets or expansion.
Brand websites are usually more accurate than marketplace listings.
Some brands also list the capacity of each half of a clamshell or the capacity of external pockets separately. These details reveal how practical the space is. A bag with a deep main compartment and slim pockets is easier to pack than one with large, awkwardly shaped pockets.
Making the most of your litres
Roll soft items, fold structured ones, fill shoes and use corners. Use compression cubes for knitwear. Choose a capsule wardrobe, such as co-ord sets that mix and match, to reduce the number of items.
Pack toiletries in travel sizes and choose multi-use products. Leave space for souvenirs or use an expander on the return.
Practice packing at home to see what fits.
Shoes are the biggest volume consumers. Choose one versatile pair that works for day and evening, such as block-heel sandals or polished loafers, plus whatever you wear on the plane. That alone can free up several litres.
Checklist for choosing capacity
Decide typical trip length and packing style. Confirm size limits for your airline. Choose litres that fit within those limits. Check weight to ensure you can use the volume. Consider an expander for return trips.
With the right capacity and a smart wardrobe, your cabin bag can handle most trips without check-in.
Shop luxury cabin trolleys with clear specifications to compare litres accurately.
Revisit your choice after a few trips. If you consistently have space left over, a smaller, lighter bag may suit you. If you always struggle to close the zip, consider a bag with a few more litres or rethink what you pack.
Keep a note of what fits in your bag for different trip types, such as a weekend in Lonavala or a week in Singapore. Over time, that list becomes a personal packing template and makes choosing the right capacity for your next bag far easier.
