Do you need a lock on your cabin trolley?
A built-in TSA-accepted combination lock is the most useful option for a cabin trolley, because it secures the zips without a dangling padlock and lets security in the United States open the bag without damaging it. For domestic Indian flights, a lock mainly deters opportunistic tampering when the bag is out of sight, such as when it is gate-checked or left in a hotel room.
Cabin bags are usually with you, so locks matter less than for checked luggage. But there are times when a carry-on leaves your hands: gate checks on full flights, hotel storage rooms, train luggage racks and shared taxis.
This guide explains lock types, how to set them and when they matter.
Locks also give peace of mind in ordinary moments. Stepping away from your bag for a minute in a café at the airport, leaving it in the boot of a hired car in Goa while you eat, or storing it in a hotel cloakroom after checkout are all situations where a locked zip discourages a quick look inside.

TSA-accepted locks explained
TSA-accepted locks have a special keyhole that security officers in the United States can open with a master key. If they need to inspect your bag, they can do so without breaking the lock. Without a TSA-accepted lock, they may cut it off.
Outside the United States, TSA locks function like normal combination locks. Many premium trolleys include them as standard.
Look for the red diamond logo or a TSA-accepted mention in the listing.
If you fly to the United States, it is worth knowing that security officers may inspect checked bags out of your sight and, occasionally, cabin bags too. A TSA-accepted lock ensures they can do so without damaging your bag, and an inspection notice is often left inside. For carry-ons, inspection usually happens in front of you, but the lock remains useful when bags are gate-checked.
When shopping, check whether the lock is fixed to the shell or recessed flush. Flush locks are less likely to be knocked or broken in overhead bins. Raised locks can snag on other bags and are vulnerable to impact, especially on hard shells.
Built-in vs separate padlocks
Built-in locks are integrated into the shell, with zip pullers that slot into the lock. They are neat, cannot be lost and keep the bag looking sleek. Separate padlocks can be added to any bag but may be lost, can catch on things and look less polished.
Latch locks on frame cases are the most secure, as there is no zip.
For soft trolleys, a small TSA-accepted padlock through the zip pulls is common.
Some soft trolleys include lockable zip pulls rather than a built-in lock, meaning you need a small padlock. Choose a compact TSA-accepted padlock with a cable rather than a hard shackle, which threads more easily through zip pulls and is less likely to snag.
Frame-and-latch cases, common in aluminium and some premium polycarbonate designs, usually have two locks, one on each side of the handle. They are the most secure option for carry-ons but add weight, so they suit travellers who prioritise security over every gram of their cabin allowance.
Zip security
A zipped bag can be opened by forcing a pen through the teeth and resealing it by running the pullers along. Locks prevent the pullers from moving, but not this kind of tampering. Double-coil or anti-puncture zips resist it better.
This is why valuables should always travel in your personal item.
Frame cases with latches avoid this vulnerability entirely.
Anti-theft zips with a locking slider or a hidden zip garage add protection. Some soft bags use zips concealed under a fabric flap, making them harder to tamper with discreetly. These features are especially useful on crowded trains and city buses.
Remember that locks protect against casual curiosity, not a determined thief. The best protection for jewellery, cash and gadgets is keeping them on your person or in your personal item, close to you at all times, especially on overnight journeys.
How to set or reset a combination lock
Most luggage locks come set to 000. To set your code, typically you press a reset button or move a lever while the lock is open, set your new code and release. Instructions vary by brand, so check the manual.
Choose a code that is memorable but not obvious, such as not your birth year. Note it somewhere safe.
Test the code several times before travelling.
Some brands use a three-digit system and others a four-digit system. Three-digit locks offer a thousand combinations; four-digit locks offer ten thousand, which is stronger. If you are choosing between two similar bags, a four-digit lock is a small but meaningful upgrade.
Once set, practise opening and closing the lock with the zips in place so the routine becomes automatic. Some built-in locks require you to slot both zip pullers in firmly until they click; if you skip that step, the bag looks locked but is not. A quick tug on the pullers after locking confirms they are held.
If you forget your code
Some locks can be reset by trying combinations systematically, which takes time. Brand service centres may help with proof of purchase. Avoid forcing the lock, which can damage the shell.
Keep the code in a secure note on your phone.
Some brands offer guides for recovering codes.
Prevention is easier than recovery. Set the code at home rather than in a rush at the airport, and test it several times. Avoid changing the code while the lock is closed, which can scramble the mechanism on some designs.
If you buy second-hand or inherit a bag with an unknown code, a service centre may be able to reset it with proof of ownership. Locksmiths experienced with luggage can also help, but the cost may approach that of a replacement lock, so weigh it up before proceeding.
When locks matter most
Locks matter when the bag is out of your sight: gate checks, hotel storage, train racks, shared transport and US travel. They also deter casual snooping.
On Indian trains, chaining your trolley to the berth with a cable lock adds security on overnight journeys.
In hotel rooms, a locked bag deters casual theft.
Gate checks are common on full domestic flights, particularly on smaller aircraft and during busy holiday periods such as Diwali and the winter wedding season. When your carry-on is gate-checked, lock it and remove any valuables, power banks and medicines before handing it over.
For overnight trains, such as Rajdhani or Shatabdi services, keep the bag under your lower berth if possible and lock it to the chain loop provided in many coaches with a cable lock. Keep your handbag with you on the berth.
Other security features
Hidden pockets for valuables, RFID-blocking compartments for cards and passports and tracking devices placed inside the bag add security. Some travellers use Bluetooth trackers to locate their bags.
Check airline rules on trackers with batteries.
A distinctive look also deters theft, as unique bags are less attractive to thieves.
Tracking devices placed in a hidden pocket can help locate a gate-checked bag at a busy airport. If you use one, keep it in a pocket where it will not be mistaken for a loose battery and check that its battery type is acceptable for your airline.
RFID-blocking sleeves are most relevant for contactless cards and newer passports. They add little weight and can live permanently in your personal item, giving quiet protection in crowded airports and markets.
Final advice
Choose a cabin trolley with a built-in TSA-accepted lock for convenience and versatility. Keep valuables in your personal item. Set a memorable code and test it.
Locks are a deterrent, not a guarantee. Combine them with sensible habits for the best security.
Shop cabin trolleys with integrated locks.
Combine a good lock with distinctive personalisation, sensible packing and attentive habits, and your cabin trolley will be well protected on most journeys. Choose a bag where the lock is part of a well-built whole, with strong zips and secure stitching, rather than a lock bolted onto a flimsy shell.
