Carrying jewellery on flights in India: the basics
When carrying jewellery on flights in India, keep it in your cabin bag or personal item rather than checked luggage, because airlines typically limit liability for valuables in the hold. Pack it in a compact, padded jewellery case, keep it with you at all times, and carry purchase invoices or valuations for expensive pieces, especially on international trips where customs rules apply. Confirm current customs allowances with official sources before travelling abroad.
For Indian women, jewellery is often part of the journey: wedding sets for a cousin's celebration in Udaipur, heirloom pieces for a festival back home, or diamond studs for a holiday dinner in Paris. These pieces carry financial and emotional value, and losing them would be devastating. With the right case and a few sensible habits, they can travel safely and arrive ready to wear.
The advice below applies whether you are carrying a single diamond pendant or an entire bridal trousseau. The principles are the same: keep it close, keep it organised, and keep proof that it belongs to you.

Why jewellery belongs in your cabin bag
Checked bags pass through many hands and machines, are occasionally delayed or lost, and are out of your sight for hours. Airlines commonly exclude or limit compensation for jewellery, cash and other valuables placed in checked baggage. Even if your bag arrives, a heavy jolt can damage delicate settings or scratch stones.
In the cabin, jewellery stays with you. Keep it in your personal item, such as a structured tote under the seat in front of you, rather than in the overhead bin, which you cannot always see. On long flights, keep the jewellery case in the tote and the tote close by, especially if you sleep. In lounges and cafés, never leave the tote unattended.
Be discreet. Avoid opening your jewellery case in public areas, and do not discuss what you are carrying in queues or on the phone. A plain, elegant case attracts far less attention than a branded jewellery box.
Choosing a travel jewellery case
A good travel jewellery case is compact, padded and structured, with separate compartments for rings, earrings and necklaces. Look for ring rolls, earring panels with holes or slots, hooks or loops for chains to prevent tangling, and a sturdy zip. Leather or vegan leather cases look elegant and protect well; fabric cases with quilted padding are lighter.
For bridal or heavy sets, a larger structured box with a firm shell protects necklaces and maang tikkas from crushing. Some vanity cases include jewellery compartments, which is useful when you are also carrying makeup for a wedding. Whatever you choose, it should fit easily in your personal item without bulging, so it does not slow security or attract attention.
Check the zip and clasp of your jewellery case before each trip. A small fault, such as a zip that slips open, can let tiny earrings escape inside your bag, and you may not notice until you reach your destination.
Packing gold, diamonds and delicate pieces
Pack each piece separately to prevent scratches. Diamonds are hard enough to scratch gold and other stones, so keep them in individual pouches or compartments. Thread fine chains through a straw or fasten the clasp and lay them flat in a slot. Wrap pearls separately, as they are soft and easily damaged. Use small zip bags for earrings with backs to keep pairs together.
For kundan, polki and temple jewellery, keep the original boxes if they are not too bulky, or pad each piece with soft tissue. Avoid packing heavy jewellery sets under other items in your bag. Place the jewellery case in the middle of your tote, surrounded by soft items like a shawl, to cushion it from knocks.
Silver jewellery tarnishes faster in humid weather, so add an anti-tarnish strip to its pouch on trips to Mumbai, Kerala or Southeast Asia.
For multiple sets, label small pouches with the event name, such as Mehendi, Sangeet or Reception. It saves time when dressing in a hurry and helps family members find the right pieces without opening every pouch.
Airport security with jewellery
Jewellery in your bag will pass through the X-ray scanner and may be inspected. This is routine. If asked, open the case calmly. Wearing heavy jewellery through metal detectors may set them off, so remove chunky bangles and large pieces before screening and place them in your jewellery pouch.
Simple pieces such as small studs or a thin chain usually stay on without issues. Choose a minimal airport look and wear your statement pieces at the destination. Many women wear a classic watch and small earrings while flying and keep everything else packed safely.
Mangalsutras, toe rings and small religious pendants worn daily usually pass without issue. If they do trigger an alarm, a brief pat-down is normal, and officers at Indian airports are generally familiar with traditional jewellery.
If a security officer wants to inspect the case, ask politely for it to be opened in front of you. You are entitled to watch your valuables being handled, and most officers prefer this anyway.
Customs basics for international travel
Many countries, including India, have rules about carrying gold and jewellery across borders, with allowances that depend on factors such as gender, length of stay abroad and value. Carrying expensive jewellery out of India and bringing it back may also raise questions at customs if you cannot show it was yours before departure. Rules change, so consult official customs guidance before travelling.
Carry invoices, valuation certificates or photos of valuable pieces. Some travellers obtain export certificates or declarations for expensive jewellery before leaving, which can simplify re-entry. If you are buying jewellery abroad, keep the receipt and understand the duty you may need to pay on return. Declare items when required; it is always better than facing penalties.
Gold coins, bars and large quantities of jewellery may be treated differently from personal jewellery worn regularly. If you are carrying gifts of gold for a wedding abroad, read the destination's rules carefully and consider whether it is wiser to buy locally.
Hotel and destination safety
At your destination, use the room safe for valuable pieces when you are not wearing them. Check that the safe works before putting jewellery inside, and do not leave jewellery out on dressing tables. For weddings, coordinate with family about who carries which pieces and keep a list.
Carry a small, elegant clutch for evening events so you can store earrings or bangles if you remove them during the night. A sling bag with a zip is a good daytime option for sightseeing if you are wearing jewellery.
If the room safe seems unreliable, many hotels offer a safe deposit box at reception. Ask for a receipt and a list of items deposited.
Insurance and documentation
Check whether your home or jewellery insurance covers travel. Some policies cover jewellery away from home, while others require specific listing of items. Travel insurance may offer limited cover for valuables. Keep copies of invoices and photos of each piece in a secure cloud folder.
If something is lost or stolen, report it to the police and, if relevant, the airline or hotel promptly. Documentation and photos make claims far easier.
Before each trip, photograph your jewellery laid out on a plain background. The photo is a simple record of what you took, and it makes it easy to check that everything is back in the case before you leave the hotel.
Jewellery travel checklist
Pack jewellery in your cabin bag, never in checked luggage. Use a padded, structured case. Separate pieces to prevent scratching. Remove chunky pieces before security. Carry invoices and valuations. Check customs rules for international trips. Use hotel safes. Keep the case with you at all times.
These steps help your jewellery arrive safely, so you can enjoy every celebration without worry. For more travel guides, explore our blog.
Finally, pair your jewellery case with a cabin bag or tote that closes fully with a zip. Open totes are elegant, but a zipped bag is far safer when it holds your most precious pieces.
