What the 158 cm rule means
Linear dimensions are the height, width and depth of a suitcase added together, including wheels and handles, and many airlines typically allow checked bags up to about 158 cm in total. Most 65 to 76 cm suitcases fit comfortably, while some extra-large bags above about 79 cm can exceed it and may be treated as oversized.
This rule is often less well known than weight allowances, but it matters. An oversized bag can attract extra fees even if it is under the weight limit, and some airlines may refuse very large bags altogether.
Knowing your suitcase's linear dimensions helps you buy the right size and avoid surprises at check-in.
Below is how to measure, which sizes fit and what to watch out for.
Think of it as a size budget that sits alongside your weight budget. You need to stay within both, and a bag that ticks one box can still fail the other. Understanding both limits gives you the confidence to buy the biggest suitcase that is still genuinely practical for flying.

How to measure linear dimensions
Stand the suitcase upright on a flat surface. Measure the height from the floor to the top of the handle in its retracted position, including wheels. Measure the width at the widest point, including side handles and feet. Measure the depth from front to back at the deepest point, including any protruding wheels or pockets.
Add the three numbers. For example, a bag measuring 75 x 50 x 30 cm totals 155 cm.
If the bag is expandable, measure the depth when expanded too, since you may travel with it expanded on the return leg.
Use the product listing as a starting point but measure at home, as brands measure differently.
A flexible tailor's tape is easier to use than a rigid ruler, especially around rounded shells and protruding wheel housings. Measure twice, write the numbers down and keep them in your phone for future reference when comparing new bags or checking a new airline's rules.
It also helps to measure with a typical packed load in place. Some soft-sided and expandable bags bulge noticeably when full, adding a centimetre or two to the depth that does not appear on the product listing.
Which sizes typically fit
Medium bags around 65 x 45 x 27 cm total about 137 cm, comfortably under the typical limit. Medium-plus bags around 69 x 47 x 28 cm total about 144 cm. Large bags around 75 x 50 x 30 cm total about 155 cm.
Extra-large bags around 79 x 53 x 32 cm can total about 164 cm, over the typical limit. Some brands design extra-large bags to sit just under 158 cm; others do not.
Expanded large bags can also push over the limit. A 75 cm bag that adds 5 cm of depth when expanded totals about 160 cm.
Always check the outer dimensions listed, and confirm with your airline.
These examples are approximate; real bags vary by brand and design. Shells with deeply rounded edges, for instance, may have smaller measured dimensions than a squarer bag of the same capacity. The point is to know your own bag's numbers rather than rely on its size label.
If you are between two bags, the one with a lower total usually gives you more freedom across airlines, routes and future fare changes, at very little cost in usable space.
Why airlines set dimension limits
Dimension limits relate to how bags fit through baggage systems, conveyors and aircraft holds. Oversized bags may need special handling, which costs airlines more.
The 158 cm figure is widely used by many carriers, but limits vary by airline and route. Some allow larger bags for sports equipment or on specific fares.
Indian domestic carriers and international airlines such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Air India may have their own rules. Check your airline's website before travelling.
When flying on multiple airlines, follow the strictest rule.
Airlines also tend to apply these rules more strictly at busy hubs and on full flights, when baggage systems are under pressure. A bag that was accepted once without comment may be measured on another day, so it is wiser to stay within limits than to rely on luck.
Buying a suitcase with dimensions in mind
If you fly long-haul often, choose a large suitcase of about 74 to 76 cm, which offers ample capacity while staying under typical limits.
Check that wheels and handles are included in the listed dimensions. A bag listed at 75 cm without wheels might be 79 cm with them.
Avoid extra-large bags unless you have confirmed they fit your usual airlines' rules.
Consider depth carefully. Trunk-style suitcases are deep and can exceed limits despite modest height.
Shape also matters for internal capacity. Two bags with identical linear totals can hold different amounts depending on how square their corners are and how much space the trolley housing takes inside. Use the litre figure alongside the dimensions to judge real usable space.
For women who want the most capacity within 158 cm, the sweet spot is often a 74 to 76 cm bag with a width around 50 cm and depth around 30 cm. That proportion offers 90 to 110 litres while keeping the bag easy to roll and lift.
What happens if your bag is oversized
Airlines may charge an oversized baggage fee, which can be significant. Some may require the bag to be checked at a special counter.
In some cases, the bag may be refused, especially if it exceeds both weight and dimension limits.
To avoid this, measure before you fly and choose a bag within limits. If you must carry an oversized item, contact the airline in advance.
Remember that weight and dimensions are separate rules; a bag can be within one and outside the other.
If you are travelling with sports or musical equipment, or with a bridal trousseau in a large trunk, contact the airline well in advance. Many carriers have specific policies for these items, and advance notice can make the process smoother and sometimes cheaper.
Linear dimensions and packing
A bag's linear dimensions affect how you pack. Deeper bags hold more but can be harder to lift and close. Taller bags roll better but may tip when fully packed.
For the best balance, choose a bag with proportions that suit your packing style. If you pack lots of shoes and structured items, a slightly deeper bag helps. If you roll clothes, a taller slimmer bag works.
Keep expansion for the return leg, and measure if you plan to expand.
Use packing cubes to fill the space evenly.
Remember that the bag's shape also affects how it sits on the conveyor belt and in the hold. Bags that are very deep compared with their height can be more prone to tipping and getting knocked around, which is another reason to favour balanced proportions.
Cabin bags and linear dimensions
Cabin bags have their own limits, often around 115 cm in total or specific measurements like 55 x 40 x 20 cm. These vary widely by airline.
Measure cabin bags with wheels and handles. A bag slightly over the limit may be checked at the gate, sometimes for a fee.
Personal items, like handbags and totes, may also have size limits on budget carriers.
Check every airline on your itinerary.
It is worth keeping a note of each airline's cabin limits in your phone if you fly several carriers. A cabin trolley that fits easily with one airline may be challenged by another, particularly on low-cost routes within Southeast Asia or Europe.
Final word
Linear dimensions matter as much as weight. Measure your bag including wheels and handles, add the three numbers and compare them with your airline's limit, typically about 158 cm for checked bags. A 74 to 76 cm suitcase usually offers the best capacity within the rule.
Keep a note of each bag's three measurements and total in your phone. When you book a new airline, a ten-second comparison against its published limit tells you whether you can relax or need to rethink which bag to take, long before you reach the check-in desk.
