Why citrus is the classic summer scent

Citrus has a long history as a hot-weather fragrance. The original eau de cologne, created in eighteenth-century Europe, was a citrus and herb tonic meant to refresh. That association with relief and cleanliness is exactly what makes citrus perfumes so appealing when the thermometer climbs past 40°C.

Citrus also has a practical advantage in Indian summers: it is almost universally liked. Citrus and the sun: a safety note

Some natural citrus oils, especially cold-pressed bergamot, contain compounds that can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. On sun-exposed skin, this can lead to irritation or pigmentation. Many modern perfumes use treated or synthetic citrus materials to reduce this risk, but caution is sensible in Indian summers.

Avoid spraying citrus perfume on areas that will be in direct sun for long periods, such as the face, neck and forearms on a beach or trek. Testing citrus perfumes

Do not judge a citrus perfume in the first five minutes. Every citrus smells wonderful when sprayed. Wear it for at least three or four hours, ideally in your normal summer conditions, and notice what remains after the opening fades. Is it a clean musk, a woody base, a floral heart, or almost nothing?

Compare two or three citrus perfumes on different days rather than at once, because citrus openings can blur together. Discovery sets and travel sizes are ideal for this. Buy from reputable sellers, since poorly stored stock often shows first in citrus notes, which can smell flat or sharp.

Pay attention to how the citrus smells on your skin compared with the blotter. Skin chemistry affects citrus notably: on some people bergamot turns slightly soapy, on others grapefruit becomes sharp or even a little sulphurous as it dries down. Testing on your own wrist for a few hours is the only way to know. If a citrus you love on paper smells off on you, try a different citrus note rather than giving up on the family entirely.
