For a two or three night Coorg weekend, the ideal bag is a 35 to 45 litre weekender in leather, waxed canvas or coated nylon, plus a small cross-body bag for estate walks. Most people drive to Coorg (Kodagu) from Bengaluru or Mysuru, stay in a coffee estate homestay or a plantation resort, and spend their time walking, eating and relaxing, so a single soft bag that drops into a car boot is all you need.

If you are staying at one of the larger luxury resorts near Madikeri or Virajpet for four nights or more, a cabin spinner is a comfortable alternative. For most weekends, though, the weekender is the better companion.

Why a weekender suits a Coorg road trip

The drive from Bengaluru to Madikeri takes around five to six hours, depending on traffic and stops at Mysuru or Kushalnagar. A soft weekender fits into any car boot, even when it is shared with a cooler box, walking shoes and shopping bags. You can also keep it on the back seat for quick access to a jacket or snacks.

Coorg homestays are often old estate bungalows with wooden staircases, verandahs and sloping paths through coffee plants. Some are reached by a short walk from the parking area, especially in the monsoon, when vehicles cannot always climb the last stretch. A weekender with a padded shoulder strap is easy to carry here, while a trolley would bump over gravel and wet paths.

Choosing the right size and material

For one person and two nights, 35 litres is plenty. For three nights or for a couple sharing, choose 45 to 55 litres. Look for a structured base with metal feet, a separate shoe compartment, a trolley sleeve if you also fly, and internal zip pockets.

Coorg is green because it rains a lot. The south-west monsoon from June to September brings very heavy rainfall, and even in other months, misty mornings leave everything damp. Full-grain leather is durable and ages beautifully but should be treated with a water-repellent conditioner before the trip. Waxed canvas is naturally water-resistant and only gets better with age. Coated nylon from brands like Mokobara, Nasher Miles or Samsonite is the lowest-maintenance choice.

If you are considering leather from brands like Hidesign or Da Milano, ask whether it is full-grain or top-grain. Full-grain develops a richer patina; top-grain is slightly more uniform and often easier to clean. Both are good for weekend use with simple care.

Weight is worth checking even on a road trip. A full-leather weekender can weigh close to 2 kg empty, and with clothes, shoes and a bottle of homemade wine on the way back it can feel heavy on a sloping estate path. If you want the leather look with less weight, consider leather-trimmed canvas, which gives the same warm character at a fraction of the heft.

Finally, think about the inside. A light-coloured lining makes it easier to find small items in a dim homestay room, and a removable pouch for chargers and toiletries saves you from emptying the whole bag every evening.

A Coorg weekend packing list for women

Clothing: two pairs of jeans or relaxed trousers, three tops or shirts, one cosy sweater or cardigan, one light jacket, a comfortable co-ord set for lazy afternoons, and one dress or kurta for dinner. Coorg evenings are cool for much of the year, especially from November to February.

Footwear: walking shoes or sneakers with good grip for estate walks and waterfalls such as Abbey Falls, and one pair of slip-ons for the homestay. In the monsoon, waterproof sandals or rubber-soled shoes are essential, as paths can be muddy and leech-prone.

Toiletries and extras: insect repellent, salt or leech socks if you trek in the monsoon, moisturiser, sunscreen, a compact umbrella and a power bank. Many homestays are remote and may have occasional power cuts.

Coorg's food is a big part of the trip, from pandi curry and akki roti to fresh estate coffee, and many homestays serve home-cooked Kodava meals at a shared table. Pack one relaxed but put-together outfit for these dinners, such as a cotton midi dress with a cardigan or a printed kurta with straight trousers. It feels respectful to your hosts and photographs well on the verandah. A light shawl over the top is useful when the evening mist rolls in across the coffee bushes.

If you are planning a trek to Tadiandamol or Brahmagiri, add trekking trousers, a quick-dry tee, a cap and a water bottle. These pack small, so a 40 litre weekender still has room for everything.

Monsoon in Coorg: waterproofing your bag

If you are travelling between June and September, plan for heavy rain. Carry a rain cover for your weekender or line it with a large dry bag. Pack electronics, documents and books in zip-lock pouches. Bring a separate wet bag for damp clothes and shoes so they do not soak the rest of your luggage on the drive home.

Leather bags need extra attention in the monsoon. Wipe them dry with a soft cloth if they get wet, let them air-dry at room temperature, never next to a heater, and stuff them with newspaper to hold their shape. Condition the leather once you get home.

Monsoon is also the season of leeches on forest trails. Keep your bag zipped and off the ground during walks, and check it before you put it into the car.

Coorg is famous for its filter coffee, pepper, cardamom, honey and homemade fruit wines. These are heavy and often in bottles or jars. Leave room in your weekender or bring a sturdy foldable tote. Wrap bottles in clothing and place them upright in the middle of the bag, or keep them in the car boot in a separate carton.

If you are flying home from Mangaluru, Mysuru or Bengaluru, remember that liquids such as wine and honey are generally restricted in cabin baggage beyond small containers, so put them in checked luggage.

Mistakes to avoid on a Coorg weekend

Packing too many outfits is the classic mistake; you will spend most of the weekend in comfortable clothes. Another is wearing smooth-soled shoes on wet estate paths. Some travellers carry delicate light-coloured bags that get muddy, or forget that many homestays are remote and lack shops for forgotten items.

A final mistake is not leaving time to repack. Check out after breakfast, pack shopping carefully, and give yourself time for the drive back to Bengaluru before evening traffic.

Some travellers also underestimate how damp clothes get in Coorg even without rain. Mist settles on everything left on a verandah chair overnight. Keep your bag zipped when you are not using it, hang tomorrow's outfit inside the room rather than outside, and tuck a couple of silica packs into the weekender so it smells fresh when you unpack at home.
