Cruise trip luggage: the quick answer
For a cruise trip, pack one medium spinner or soft-sided bag per person that can slide under the cabin bed, and an embarkation-day carry-on with everything you need for the first few hours on board. Cruise lines typically collect checked bags at the terminal and deliver them to your cabin later in the day, sometimes not until evening.
Indian travellers increasingly cruise from Singapore, Dubai and Indian ports such as Mumbai, Goa, Kochi and Chennai, as well as in the Mediterranean and Alaska. Cruise lines usually do not set strict weight limits like airlines, but cabins are compact, and your flight to the port still has its own allowance.
Think of the cruise as a floating resort: daytime casual, sea days by the pool, shore excursions and evenings that range from smart casual to themed and formal nights.
The flight to the port is where many cruise travellers come unstuck. A Singapore or Dubai cruise usually starts with a flight from India, and Mediterranean or Alaska cruises involve long-haul flights with connections. Pack to your airline's allowance, not the ship's relaxed approach, and plan to arrive in the port city at least a day before embarkation in case of delays.

Cabin storage and the under-bed rule
Most cruise cabins, especially interior and ocean-view cabins, have limited wardrobe space and slide bags under the bed once unpacked. A medium spinner of around 65 cm or a soft bag usually fits; large 75 to 80 cm hard shells may not. Check the cruise line's cabin dimensions if you can.
Unpack fully on the first evening, put cubes in drawers, hang dresses, and store the empty bag under the bed. Nest a cabin bag inside your medium bag to save space.
Over-the-door shoe organisers and magnetic hooks, if permitted by the cruise line, add storage in compact cabins.
Balcony and suite cabins usually have more storage, but even there, a single large suitcase per person fills the floor quickly. Many seasoned cruisers prefer two medium bags for a couple over two large ones, because medium cases slide under the bed while large ones end up standing in the corner for the whole voyage.
Ask your cruise line about luggage tags; many send printable tags with your cabin number, which help porters deliver bags quickly on embarkation day.
Your embarkation-day carry-on
Because checked luggage may arrive at your cabin hours after boarding, carry a tote or backpack with passports, cruise documents, medicines, swimwear, sunscreen, a change of clothes, chargers and anything valuable.
Many travellers head straight to the pool or buffet after boarding, so a swimsuit and cover-up in your carry-on mean you can start enjoying the ship immediately.
Keep a light jacket for the sail-away on deck, which can be breezy.
Pack the embarkation bag the night before with your passport and boarding documents in an outer pocket. Terminals are busy, and you will be asked for them several times between the check-in desk, security and the gangway.
Formal nights and dress codes
Many cruise lines publish a dress code for each evening in the daily programme, which may include smart casual nights, themed nights such as a white party or a tropical night, and one or two formal or gala evenings depending on the length of the voyage. A week-long cruise often has one or two formal nights, while a three or four night Singapore sailing may have just one.
For women, a formal night is a wonderful excuse to dress up. A floor-length gown, a cocktail dress, an elegant saree or a light lehenga all work, paired with heels or dressy flats, statement earrings and a clutch. Ships move, so many women prefer block heels or wedges to stilettos, especially on deck or on staircases.
Indian outfits are a hit on formal and themed nights and photograph beautifully at the grand staircase or the atrium. Choose lightweight georgette or chiffon sarees and lehengas without heavy can-can, which take up less space and are easier to manage in a compact cabin. Fold them in tissue inside a garment bag and hang them as soon as you board.
For themed nights, check the cruise line's list before you pack. A simple white outfit, a bright printed dress or a pair of sequinned trousers can cover most themes. Smart casual nights need little more than a pretty dress or tailored trousers with a silk top, which you can mix and match through the week.
Sea days and pool wear
Sea days are when the ship becomes your resort. Pools, hot tubs, spas, shows, fitness classes and long lunches fill the day. Pack two or three swimsuits so one can dry while you wear another, plus a couple of cover-ups or kaftans you can wear from the pool to the buffet, which is usually acceptable on most ships.
Ship interiors are often strongly air-conditioned, so a light cardigan, shrug or pashmina is essential for theatres and restaurants. Deck areas can be windy even on warm days, so a light windcheater helps on the top deck. Pack a hat and sunglasses with good UV protection, as sun reflected off the sea is intense.
Comfortable sneakers are useful for the ship's walking or jogging track, gym and long corridors. Many cruise ships are very large, with cabins far from restaurants, and you will walk more than you expect. A pair of comfortable sandals for poolside and a pair of flats for evenings complete your footwear.
Shore excursion bags
Shore excursions are often the highlight of a cruise: a day in Penang or Phuket from a Singapore sailing, or Abu Dhabi and Muscat from a Dubai sailing. Carry a small backpack or crossbody with water, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a little local cash or a card, your cruise card and a photo ID. Some ports require passports to go ashore, so check with your cruise line.
Dress for the destination. Many Middle Eastern and Asian ports have religious sites with dress codes requiring covered shoulders and knees, and sometimes a headscarf. A light scarf and a long skirt or loose trousers in your day bag make it easy to visit a mosque or temple without returning to the ship to change.
Always return to the ship on time. Ships rarely wait for late passengers, especially on independent excursions not booked through the cruise line. Keep the ship's all-aboard time and the port agent's contact number on your phone and in your bag.
Items cruise lines may prohibit
Cruise lines usually publish a prohibited items list on their websites. Items commonly restricted include clothes irons and steamers, certain extension cords and power strips, candles, incense and some sharp objects. Hair straighteners and dryers are usually allowed, but check. Pack wrinkle-resistant fabrics or use the ship's laundry or pressing services.
Alcohol policies vary widely. Some cruise lines allow a limited quantity of wine or champagne to be brought on board at embarkation, sometimes with a corkage fee, while others prohibit it entirely. Alcohol bought in port may be held by the ship until the end of the voyage.
Medicines should be in their original packaging, with prescriptions, and carried in your embarkation-day bag. Seasickness remedies are worth packing, especially for sailings through the Arabian Sea or the Bay of Bengal during the monsoon.
Choosing cruise luggage
A cruise suitcase should be easy to store, easy to identify and robust enough for porters at the terminal. A medium polycarbonate spinner or a structured soft case from brands like Samsonite, American Tourister, Delsey or Nasher Miles works well, with good options from around ₹6,000. Choose a distinctive colour and a sturdy luggage tag, as hundreds of bags are handled together at embarkation.
Add a tote for embarkation day, a crossbody for shore excursions and a clutch for formal nights. Together, these three bags cover every situation on a cruise, from boarding to the captain's gala dinner.
