Shared jeeps, roof carriers and hill roads

Shared and private jeeps are the most common way up to Darjeeling, and luggage is often tied on the roof under a tarpaulin. Hard cases can get scratched by ropes and slide; soft duffles sit flat and can be lashed securely. If you are travelling in a private car, boot space in a typical hatchback or small SUV is limited, especially with three or four passengers.

In the monsoon, from June to September, rain and landslides are common on hill roads. Water-resistant luggage and a rain cover are important if your bag is on the roof.

The drive includes many stops, so keep a small bag inside the car with water, snacks, motion sickness tablets, a jacket and a power bank.

When you arrive, the jeep stand or drop-off point may be a short walk from your hotel, and porters are usually available near the main road. Agree on a rate before they lift your bags. A pair of 50 litre duffles is much easier for one porter to carry up a steep lane than a single large hard case, and the porter will appreciate it too.

If you are travelling as a couple, consider one shared duffle and one shared spinner rather than two large cases. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and luggage

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the famous toy train and a UNESCO World Heritage site, runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling, with short joy rides between Darjeeling and Ghum. Coaches are small with limited luggage space. If you plan to ride the full route, travel with a soft bag and a backpack. For joy rides, leave your main luggage at the hotel and carry only a day bag.

A final mistake is not planning for multi-destination trips. Many travellers combine Darjeeling with Sikkim, Kalimpong or Mirik, which means more road transfers. Pack an overnight bag inside your main luggage for one-night stops.

Another mistake is assuming you can buy warm clothing cheaply on arrival. Darjeeling's markets do sell shawls, jackets and woollens, and they make lovely souvenirs, but quality and sizes vary. Arrive with the layers you need, and treat local shopping as a bonus rather than a plan. Finally, carry some cash: smaller shops, porters and taxi drivers may not accept cards, and ATMs on hill roads can be unreliable.

Do not overlook permits if your trip extends into Sikkim or restricted areas nearby. Checkposts on the way to Sikkim may ask for documents, and untying a roof load at the roadside is nobody's idea of fun.
