DigiYatra airport tips: the quick version
DigiYatra lets domestic travellers at participating Indian airports pass entry and boarding gates using facial recognition linked to their boarding pass, which can save time in queues. To get the most out of it, set up the app well before your trip, add your boarding pass as soon as you check in online, and travel with a well-organised cabin bag that moves through security quickly. Check whether your departure airport and terminal currently support it.
DigiYatra speeds up the gates, but security screening is still a separate step. The real time-saver is pairing the digital flow with smart packing: liquids and electronics easy to remove, a personal item that does not need unpacking, and no last-minute digging for documents.
This guide covers how DigiYatra generally works, how to prepare, and how to pack for a smooth airport journey.
Women who travel often for work between Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad tend to feel the difference most, because shaving even ten minutes off each airport visit adds up over a year of business trips.

How DigiYatra generally works
The app links your identity, verified through an official ID, to your face. When you add your boarding pass, the system shares your travel details with the departure airport. At participating gates, you look into a camera and the gate opens if your face matches the boarding pass.
DigiYatra is designed for domestic flights, and availability depends on the airport and terminal. Travel details are typically shared with the airport only for the journey, but read the app's privacy information so you understand how your data is handled.
You should always carry a valid photo ID in case of technical issues, manual checks or airlines that require it. DigiYatra is a convenience, not a replacement for documents.
If the camera does not recognise you at first, remove sunglasses or a cap, look straight at the lens and stand still for a moment. Good lighting and an unobstructed face usually solve the problem. If it still fails, staff can check you manually with your ID and boarding pass.
Setting up before travel day
Download the official app, complete identity verification and add a selfie in good light. Do it at home on a quiet evening, not in the taxi to the airport. Check that your name in the app matches your booking exactly.
Check in online and add the boarding pass to the app. Some airlines let you share the boarding pass directly; otherwise, scan the barcode. Do this as soon as online check-in opens so you are not rushing at the terminal entrance.
If you are travelling with family, each adult typically needs their own registration. Help elderly parents set it up in advance, and keep printed or digital boarding passes as backup.
Keep the app updated. A pending update discovered at the terminal entrance is a frustrating delay, especially at peak morning hours. Open the app the night before and check that your boarding pass appears correctly.
Why your bag choice still matters
DigiYatra gets you through the gate, but you still need to place your bags on the security belt and collect them on the other side. A cabin trolley with a front compartment for a laptop and a dedicated liquids pocket means you can remove items in seconds and close the bag quickly.
Bags that require full unpacking slow you down and frustrate the queue behind. Choose luggage with clear zones: one for clothes, one for electronics and documents, one for toiletries. Many premium cabin bags from brands such as Samsonite, Mokobara and Nasher Miles include organised front pockets.
Your personal item matters too. A structured tote with a zipped top and an outer pocket for your phone and ID is far faster than a slouchy bag where everything sinks to the bottom.
Avoid overstuffed bags. A trolley bulging at the seams may need to be opened for a closer look if the scanner image is cluttered. Leaving a little space and grouping items in pouches gives security a clearer picture and reduces the chance of a manual search.
Security tray strategy
Before you reach the trays, remove your watch, belt, chunky jewellery and coins and put them into a zipped pocket in your tote. Take out the laptop or tablet if your airport requires it, along with the liquids pouch. Place shoes in a tray only if asked.
Use as few trays as possible: one for electronics and liquids, one for your personal item, and the trolley directly on the belt. On the other side, step aside to repack rather than at the end of the belt where people are waiting.
Newer scanners at some airports allow electronics and liquids to stay in bags, but this varies. Follow the instructions at your checkpoint.
Keep your liquids pouch in the same place every trip. When it always lives in the top compartment of your trolley, your hands go there automatically, and the whole tray routine becomes muscle memory.
Dressing for a fast airport flow
Airport outfits with fewer metal accessories move faster. Choose a co-ord set or a simple dress with a light jacket, slip-on sneakers or loafers, and minimal jewellery. Keep heavy jewellery in your cabin bag rather than wearing it through the scanner.
A jacket or blazer with pockets is useful for your phone and boarding pass, but empty the pockets into a tray at screening. Belts with large buckles and boots with metal details usually need to come off.
Sunglasses can sit on your head in the queue but should go into your bag before the scanner. A hard sunglasses case protects them from getting crushed in the tray.
A slim watch with a fabric or leather strap is an easy choice. It is far quicker to slip off than stacked bangles, and it keeps you on schedule at the gate.
At the gate and on board
Some airports also use DigiYatra at boarding gates. Keep your phone ready with the boarding pass in case the airline asks to see it. With the right bag, you can board quickly, stow your trolley and settle in.
Place your trolley in the overhead bin wheels first and your tote under the seat in front. Keep a small pouch with lip balm, earphones and moisturiser in an outer pocket so you can reach it without opening the main bag.
If the flight is full, airlines may ask some passengers to check cabin bags at the gate. Keep your valuables and power bank in your tote so you can hand over the trolley in seconds.
If you have checked luggage, use the bag drop counter early. Some airlines offer self bag drop kiosks at major airports, which can be quicker than staffed counters. Weigh your bag at home so there are no surprises at the kiosk.
A morning-flight routine
The night before: check in online, add the boarding pass to DigiYatra, pack your liquids pouch and tech pouch, and lay out your outfit. In the morning: confirm the terminal, carry ID, and leave with enough time for traffic in cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru.
At the airport: use DigiYatra at entry, check bag drop if needed, head to security with your trays strategy, and keep your boarding pass handy. Many frequent flyers find this routine trims the stress of early flights considerably.
Fast airport travel is less about rushing and more about removing friction. Digital entry plus organised luggage does exactly that.
For a late evening return flight, keep the same structure. Pack your liquids and tech pouches at the hotel, check in online, refresh the boarding pass in the app and head to the airport with a bag that is ready for trays.
What DigiYatra does not change
Baggage allowances, liquid rules, power bank rules and check-in deadlines remain the same. Bag drop counters still apply if you have checked luggage, so factor in that time. DigiYatra may not be available at every airport, terminal or gate, and international flights generally use separate processes.
Keep your ID and boarding pass accessible as backup, and stay flexible if a gate or camera is not working.
