How to tie-dye a t-shirt at home
To tie-dye a t-shirt at home, soak a 100 percent cotton tee in soda ash or salt water, wring it out, fold and bind it with rubber bands, apply fabric dye in sections, wrap it in plastic for 6 to 24 hours, then rinse in cold water until the water runs clear and wash separately. The binding blocks dye, creating patterns.
Tie-dye is having another moment in 2026, with softer pastel palettes and Indian-inspired bandhani dots joining the classic spiral. It is also one of the most rewarding DIY projects: a plain white tee becomes a one-of-a-kind piece in an afternoon.
This guide covers supplies, safety, three folding techniques and how to set the dye so it does not bleed.
India has a long tradition of resist dyeing through bandhani and leheriya, so tie-dye fits beautifully with Indo-western wardrobes.
Tie-dye is also a wonderful group activity for birthday parties, college clubs, kitty parties and family weekends. Everyone makes their own tee, and the results become matching but unique souvenirs. It is inexpensive too: a basic kit and a few plain white cotton tees cost far less than buying designer tie-dye pieces.

Supplies you will need
Choose a 100 percent cotton tee; natural fibres absorb dye best. Polyester blends give faded results. White tees show colours most vividly, but light grey or pastel tees create interesting muted shades.
For dye, cold-water fibre-reactive dyes are the most vivid and long-lasting. Many tie-dye kits sold online include powder dyes, squeeze bottles, gloves and rubber bands. Regular all-purpose fabric dyes also work, especially with hot water, but colours may be less bright.
You will also need soda ash or washing soda (which helps reactive dyes bond), salt for all-purpose dyes, rubber bands or string, gloves, plastic sheets or a tray, zip bags or cling film and old clothes to wear.
Work in a well-ventilated area, like a balcony or terrace, and cover surfaces to prevent stains.
If you prefer natural dyes, you can experiment with turmeric for yellow, beetroot for pink, onion skins for orange-brown and indigo for blue. Natural dyes produce softer, earthy tones and may fade faster, but they are a fun, eco-friendly experiment. Use alum as a mordant to help fix natural colours.
Safety and preparation
Wear gloves at all times; dyes stain skin for days. Wear a mask when mixing powder dyes to avoid inhaling particles. Keep dyes away from children and pets, and do not use kitchen utensils you will later use for food.
Pre-wash the tee to remove sizing chemicals that can block dye. Then soak it in a soda ash solution (about one tablespoon per litre of warm water) for 15 to 20 minutes if using reactive dyes. Wring it out until damp.
Mix dyes according to package directions. Squeeze bottles make precise application easy.
Plan your colour scheme: adjacent colours on the colour wheel, like blue and green, blend beautifully. Opposites, like red and green, can turn muddy brown where they meet.
Plan where the colours will go on the folded fabric before you start squeezing dye. It helps to sketch a quick plan or look at reference photos. Remember that dye spreads, so leave small gaps between colours and apply less than you think near the borders.
Technique 1: The classic spiral
Lay the damp tee flat. Pinch the centre with your fingers or a fork and twist clockwise, keeping the fabric flat, until the whole tee forms a round disc.
Secure with three or four rubber bands crossing the centre, making six or eight wedges like a pizza. Apply a different dye colour to each wedge, saturating both top and bottom.
Flip the disc and repeat on the back, matching colours to the front wedges.
Wrap in plastic and let it sit for 6 to 24 hours. Longer times give richer colour.
For a pastel spiral, dilute the dyes with extra water. Pastel spirals in lilac, baby blue and soft pink are hugely popular in 2026 and look lovely with white denim and sneakers. For bold spirals, use concentrated dye and apply it generously.
Technique 2: The crumple
The crumple creates a marbled, abstract pattern and is the easiest technique for beginners. Scrunch the damp tee randomly into a tight, flat bundle and secure with rubber bands.
Apply two or three colours randomly across the surface, leaving some white areas. Flip and repeat.
For a softer look, use a single colour, like indigo or rose. The crumple pairs well with denim and casual outfits.
This technique is forgiving, so it is a great choice for kids' craft afternoons.
Try a single-colour crumple in a sophisticated shade like charcoal, olive or navy for a tee you can wear to more places. Monochrome crumple designs look subtle and stylish, a little like marbled stone.
Technique 3: Bandhani-inspired dots
Inspired by Gujarati and Rajasthani bandhani, this technique creates small circles. Pinch small sections of fabric, about 1 cm, and wrap each tightly with thread or tiny rubber bands. Make a grid or pattern across the tee.
Dip the whole tee in a single dye colour, like red, maroon, mustard or indigo, to create white dots on a coloured base.
Once dried, remove the bindings to reveal the dots. This makes a beautiful Indo-western tee that pairs with palazzos, jhumkas and kolhapuris.
It takes patience but gives a striking, traditional-inspired result.
You can also try a leheriya-inspired stripe by rolling the tee diagonally into a tube and binding it at intervals before dipping it into dye. This creates diagonal waves of colour inspired by the Rajasthani technique.
Rinsing and setting the colour
After the dye has rested, rinse the tee in cold water with the bands still on, until the water runs mostly clear. Then remove the bands and rinse again.
Wash the tee alone in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry it in the shade. For the next few washes, wash separately or with similar colours.
Adding a cup of white vinegar to the first rinse can help set colours from all-purpose dyes, though reactive dyes rely mainly on soda ash.
Avoid sunlight drying for the first few days to prevent fading.
If colour still bleeds after the first wash, wash it again separately with a little extra detergent. Avoid washing tie-dyed tees with whites for the first three or four washes. Over time, the colours stabilise.
Styling your tie-dye tee
Pair a spiral tie-dye tee with denim shorts and white sneakers for a festival look. A pastel crumple tee with white wide-leg trousers looks fresh for brunch. A bandhani tee with ethnic palazzos and jhumkas works for casual festive gatherings.
Keep other pieces plain, as tie-dye is the star. Add a denim jacket or an open shirt for layering.
Tie-dye matching tees also make fun group outfits for birthdays, girls' trips and college events.
Finish with simple accessories, like hoops and a canvas tote.
For a Holi party, a pre-made tie-dye tee looks fun before the colours even start. For a concert, a dark tie-dye tee with black jeans and boots feels edgy. A pastel crumple tee with a white denim skirt and pearl earrings looks pretty for brunch.
Troubleshooting common problems
Muddy colours mean too many colours mixed or opposites touching. Next time, leave white space between colours. Faded colours mean the tee was polyester, the dye time was short or soda ash was skipped.
Colour bleeding usually means insufficient rinsing; rinse longer before washing. Uneven patterns often happen when the tee is too wet; wring it out more.
Practise on an old tee first if you are nervous.
Every tie-dye is unique, and small imperfections add charm.
Blotches without patterns often mean the binding was too loose. Tighten rubber bands and pleats so the dye is properly resisted. White spots inside the folds are normal, as dye does not always penetrate thick bundles; push the bottle tip into the folds for more coverage.
