Dubai trip luggage: the quick answer
For a Dubai trip of four to seven days, take one medium 65 to 70 cm spinner packed half-full, plus a carry-on tote, because Dubai is a shopping destination and you will almost certainly come home heavier. Pack breathable, modest-leaning outfits for malls and souks, one outfit for a desert safari, and something dressy for rooftop dinners.
Dubai is one of the most popular international trips from India, with short flights of around three to four hours from Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi or Hyderabad on carriers such as Emirates, Air India and IndiGo. Baggage allowances vary hugely between these airlines and fare types, so check your booking before you decide how much to pack, especially if flying a low-cost fare.
A quick note on low-cost fares: some fare types on short Gulf routes include only cabin baggage. If you are on such a fare and plan to shop, add checked baggage at booking, when it is usually cheapest, rather than at the airport counter on the way home.
Peak season, from November to March, also brings events like the Dubai Shopping Festival and Global Village, which often coincide with Indian school holidays around Christmas and New Year. Flights and hotels fill early, and so do baggage allowances once you factor in the shopping. Packing light on the way out is the easiest way to avoid excess fees.

Why a half-empty suitcase makes sense
Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, the Gold Souk and outlet malls during the Dubai Shopping Festival tempt even disciplined travellers. Arriving with a half-full medium spinner or a nested set, a cabin bag inside a medium bag, lets you return with two checked pieces if your allowance permits.
An expandable hard-shell is useful too, adding a few centimetres of depth on the way home. If your fare has a lower checked allowance on the return, you can often pre-purchase extra baggage online, which is usually cheaper than paying at the airport. Confirm current charges with your airline before travelling.
A nested pair, where a cabin spinner fits inside a medium one, is especially popular for Dubai. You check in only one bag on the way out and two on the return, provided your allowance permits. Check the internal dimensions before buying, as not every cabin bag fits inside every medium shell.
What to wear in Dubai as an Indian woman
Dubai is cosmopolitan, but malls and public places expect respectful dressing. Covering shoulders and knees in malls and souks is considerate. Pack breathable cotton and linen co-ords, maxi dresses, wide-leg trousers and long kurtas. Beachwear is fine at beaches and pools, with a cover-up when walking through hotel lobbies.
For visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in nearby Abu Dhabi or Jumeirah Mosque, women need loose clothing covering arms and legs and a headscarf; check the mosque's dress code before you go. Evenings at rooftop bars or dinner cruises in Dubai Marina call for a chic dress or a satin co-ord with block heels.
Hotels in Dubai range from beach resorts at Jumeirah and Palm Jumeirah to city hotels in Downtown and Deira. Resort stays need more swimwear, cover-ups and sandals; city stays need more mall-friendly outfits. Pack according to where you stay, not just the destination name.
Dubai's metro has women and children only carriages, which can be comfortable when travelling alone. Carry a light stole or shrug at all times; it instantly makes a sleeveless dress appropriate for a mall or a souk and keeps you warm in the chill of indoor air conditioning.

Desert safari outfit and bag
Desert safaris involve dune bashing, sand, camel rides and an evening barbecue camp. Wear loose full-length trousers or a maxi dress with leggings, a breathable top, and closed sneakers or sandals you do not mind filling with sand. A light scarf protects against wind and sand and makes a great photo prop.
Carry a small crossbody instead of a large handbag, as you will be holding on in the vehicle. Sunglasses, sunscreen, a lip balm and a power bank are enough. Evenings in the desert can be cool from November to February, so pack a light shrug or denim jacket.
For a family trip with children to theme parks such as Ferrari World or IMG Worlds, pack sneakers, caps and quick-dry clothes, and carry a small backpack for water and snacks rather than a handbag. You will be walking and queuing for hours in warm weather.
Dubai weather and fabric choices
Summer, from about May to September, is extremely hot and humid outdoors, while malls, metro and cabs are heavily air-conditioned. Choose cotton, linen and viscose for outdoors, and carry a light stole for chilly interiors. Winter, from November to March, is pleasant with warm days and cooler nights, and is peak tourist season.
Avoid heavy synthetics that trap heat and stain with sweat. Light colours reflect heat, and a wide-brimmed hat and good sunglasses are essential for outdoor sights like the Dubai Frame, Miracle Garden and Global Village. Pack sunscreen in travel-size bottles if carrying it in your cabin bag.
In summer, even short walks between a cab and a building feel intense. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning or evening, and carry a small bottle of water. A light, breathable cotton scarf protects shoulders and neck from the sun and serves as a cover-up when needed.
Abaya-style long shrugs, linen shirts worn open over a vest, and palazzo pants in breathable fabrics are favourite Dubai pieces for Indian women. They look elegant in Instagram photos at the Burj Khalifa observation deck, cover you appropriately and stay cool. Pack them in a neutral palette with one bright colour for photos against the desert.
Packing gold, electronics and perfume for the return
Many Indian visitors buy gold, electronics and perfumes in Dubai. Keep jewellery and electronics in your cabin bag, never in checked luggage. Indian customs has duty-free allowances and declaration rules for gold and other goods that change from time to time; check the current rules before shopping and keep invoices.
Wrap perfumes in clothing and place them in the centre of a hard-shell case. Dates, chocolates and spices travel well in checked luggage when sealed. Bottles of perfume above 100 ml cannot go in your cabin bag unless bought duty-free and sealed according to airport rules, so plan accordingly.
Electronics bought in Dubai should travel with their boxes and invoices, ideally in your cabin bag. Keep lithium batteries and power banks in cabin baggage only; they are generally not permitted in checked luggage. Your airline website will list current rules.
Cabin bag essentials for a short Dubai flight
Even on a short flight, keep a change of clothes, medicines, chargers, documents including your visa, a light shawl and makeup basics in your cabin bag. Cabin weight limits on many airlines serving Dubai are around 7 kg in economy, but low-cost carriers can be strict, so weigh your bag at home.
A leather tote with a zip and a trolley sleeve is ideal here; it looks polished for a five-star arrival and doubles as a mall bag. Keep one empty foldable tote inside for shopping days to avoid juggling multiple paper bags.
Dubai Duty Free at the airport is a final shopping opportunity, so leave space in your tote for chocolates or perfumes bought there, keeping in mind connection airports and Indian customs rules for duty-free purchases.
Picking luggage that suits Dubai
For Dubai, prioritise capacity flexibility and a polished look. A matched set of cabin and medium spinner from brands such as American Tourister, Samsonite, Nasher Miles or Mokobara works well, with prices for good sets starting from around ₹8,000 to ₹10,000. TSA-approved locks, smooth wheels and expandable zips are worth paying for.
Since airport transfers in Dubai are mostly by cab and hotel porters are common, you can comfortably take a slightly larger case than you would for Europe. Browse our luxury travel bags to choose a set that suits your shopping plans.
A final tip for Dubai: because airport transfers and porters make handling easy, focus on organisation inside your bag. Separate shopping in labelled pouches, keep invoices in a document folder and you will move through Indian customs on arrival quickly and confidently.
