The short answer
For most family trips, a family of four needs two check-in suitcases, one large of about 75 cm and one medium of about 65 to 69 cm, plus two cabin bags or a cabin bag and a backpack. That combination covers a one to two week holiday without overloading any single bag or leaving the parents with more luggage than hands.
Families who travel with very young children may need an extra soft bag for nappies, food and toys, while families with teenagers often let each teen carry their own cabin bag.
The goal is not to carry everything. It is to carry the right amount in bags that are easy to manage through airports, stations and hotel lobbies with children in tow.
The rest of this guide covers how to split packing, which sizes work best and which features genuinely help on family trips.
Most families overpack because they plan for every possible situation. The truth is that you can buy forgotten basics almost anywhere, from Goa to Dubai to London, and a lighter set of bags makes the journey itself far less exhausting for parents.

How many suitcases a family really needs
Start by counting adults who can pull bags. Two adults can comfortably manage one check-in bag each plus a cabin bag or backpack. Any more and someone ends up juggling bags while holding a child's hand.
For a domestic trip to Goa, Kerala or Shimla, one large suitcase may be enough for the whole family, with each adult carrying a cabin bag. For international trips with longer stays or colder weather, two check-in bags are usually needed.
Children over about eight can wheel a small cabin bag or carry a backpack of their own essentials. It gives them responsibility and frees the parents' hands.
Avoid the temptation of four large suitcases. Each extra bag is another thing to watch, count and lift into cars.
One more tip from seasoned family travellers: assign each bag an owner for the trip. Mum handles the large suitcase, Dad the medium, each child their backpack. Counting bags at every transfer becomes a quick roll call rather than a stressful headcount, and nobody leaves a bag behind in a taxi or at a security tray.
Sizes that work best for families
A 75 cm large suitcase holds roughly 90 to 110 litres, enough for children's clothes and shared items like towels and swimwear. A 65 to 69 cm medium holds the adults' clothing comfortably for a week or more.
A 55 cm cabin trolley is useful for each adult, carrying medicines, valuables, a change of clothes for every family member and snacks. Children's backpacks of 15 to 25 litres carry a book, headphones, a water bottle and a soft toy.
A three-piece luggage set covers most of this neatly and nests for storage. Families often find that a set plus two backpacks is the ideal travel kit.
Choose sizes based on your typical allowance; on domestic flights with roughly 15 kg per passenger, distribute weight carefully.
Splitting packing across bags
Do not pack one bag per person. Instead, split each person's clothes across two bags. If one bag is delayed by the airline, everyone still has a few outfits.
Use packing cubes in different colours for each family member. Blue for one child, green for the other, grey for the adults. Unpacking at the hotel then takes minutes, and children can find their own clothes.
Put shared items, like a first-aid kit, sunscreen and chargers, in the cabin bags. Toiletries for everyone can go in one shared kit in a check-in bag, with travel sizes in the cabin bag for the flight.
Keep a cube of spare clothes for each child in a cabin bag. Spills, upset stomachs and rainy days happen, and you do not want to open check-in bags at the airport.
Label cubes clearly with the child's name and, for younger ones, a small picture. It makes unpacking a game, and children become more independent about choosing their own clothes each morning, which saves parents a surprising amount of time on holiday.
Features that make family trips easier
Double spinner wheels are essential. You will often push a suitcase with one hand while holding a child or a stroller with the other. Spinners glide alongside you; two-wheel bags must be tilted and pulled.
Look for bags with good top and side handles, because you will lift them into car boots, onto train racks and up stairs. A TSA-accepted lock helps on US routes and keeps curious hands out.
Bright or distinctive colours make family bags easy to spot. A matching family set in a bold shade, or neutral bags with bright straps, saves time at baggage carousels.
Polycarbonate shells protect contents from rough handling and rain, which matters with children's electronics and snacks inside.
Interior organisation also matters more with families. A suitcase with a zipped divider on one side and compression straps on the other lets you keep children's clothes on one half and shared items on the other, so the bag can be opened partially without everything spilling out in a cramped hotel room.
Packing list highlights for a family of four
For a one-week beach trip: five outfits per child plus two spare, swimwear, a cover-up and hats, sandals and one pair of closed shoes each, nightwear, a small toy bag, children's sunscreen, insect repellent and a basic medicine kit.
For the adults: four to five outfits each, one dressy outfit for dinners, swimwear, sandals and sneakers, and a shared toiletry kit.
Shared items: a travel first-aid kit, a power bank and multi-charger, ziplock bags for wet clothes, a laundry bag and a lightweight foldable duffle for the return trip.
Keep a stroller or baby carrier separate; many airlines typically allow these in addition to standard allowances, but rules vary, so confirm with your airline.
Managing weight on family trips
On domestic flights with typical 15 kg allowances per passenger, a family of four may have around 60 kg of check-in allowance in total, but only if the airline permits pooling on one booking. Rules on pooling vary; confirm before relying on it.
Weigh each bag at home. Distribute heavy items such as shoes and toiletries evenly so no single bag exceeds its individual limit.
Leave space for the return journey. Families buy more than they expect, from souvenirs to clothes that children outgrow mid-trip. A foldable duffle gives you that extra capacity.
Use cabin bags strategically for dense items like tablets and chargers, but remember that cabin bags are sometimes weighed too.
For return journeys after long stays with grandparents, families often come back with homemade snacks, festive clothes and gifts. Plan for this by keeping one suitcase half empty on the outbound trip or packing that foldable duffle.
Travelling with family on Indian trains
Train travel adds its own challenges. On AC sleeper coaches, 65 cm suitcases generally fit under lower berths, but 75 cm bags may not. Two medium bags can be easier than one large.
Choose bags with strong side handles for lifting onto berths, and carry a chain and padlock to secure bags overnight. Pack an overnight pouch with toothbrushes, a towel and nightwear so you do not have to open suitcases on the train.
Keep children's snacks and entertainment in a backpack within reach. Long journeys go faster with a steady supply of both.
Overnight trains such as the Rajdhani are often the most relaxed way for families to travel within India, and with smart luggage choices they become part of the adventure rather than a logistics challenge. Keep the bags compact and the essentials pouch close.
Final take
A family of four travels best with two check-in bags, two cabin bags and a backpack per child. Split clothes across bags, use colour-coded cubes and choose spinner suitcases with strong handles. With the right luggage, family travel becomes calmer for everyone.
Start with a three-piece set and a backpack for each child, test it on a short domestic trip, and adjust before the big international holiday.
