How much family trip luggage you really need

For a typical family trip with kids, a family of four does best with two large or medium check-in suitcases, one cabin spinner for the parents' essentials and a small backpack for each child. That gives every person something to carry or wheel, keeps the cab boot manageable and stops you from arriving at a hotel with seven mismatched pieces and two tired children.

The temptation is to pack one bag per person. It feels tidy, but four check-in suitcases plus carry-ons are hard to steer through an airport with a child holding each hand, and they rarely fit in a standard sedan. Packing by function instead of by person, with one bag for everyone's clothes, one for shoes and extras, and a cabin bag for the flight, is easier on everyone.

Keep all documents in one pouch carried by one parent, and agree beforehand who holds it so you are never both assuming the other has the passports.

Airports, cabs and trains with children

At the airport, check in the big bags as early as possible, then move through security with only the cabin spinner, kids' backpacks and a pram if you use one. Many airlines let you take a foldable stroller to the gate, but check your airline's policy before travelling. Board early when families are invited, so you have time to stow bags before the aisle fills.

For Indian rail journeys, two medium suitcases fit under lower berths far more easily than one huge case. Book a cab size that matches your luggage; an SUV or a larger hatchback is worth it for four people and three or more bags. Teach the children a simple rule: when the family stops, everyone checks they have their own backpack.

Road trips and hill-station holidays

Not every family trip involves a plane. For a drive to Lonavala, Coorg, Mussoorie or the Nilgiris, the constraint is the boot rather than an airline limit, and soft bags often beat hard cases because they squeeze around each other. A couple of 50 to 60 litre duffles or soft-sided trolleys, plus a cooler bag for snacks, usually pack more neatly than two rigid spinners.

Keep one small bag with the night's essentials, pyjamas, toothbrushes, medicines and tomorrow's clothes for the children, right at the back of the boot so you can lift it out at a midway stop or a late arrival without unloading everything. Hill stations also mean layers: fleeces, a warm cap for each child and socks, even in summer, because evenings can be surprisingly cold.

If your hotel or homestay is up a steep path or has no lift, which is common in hill towns and heritage properties, the parent carrying the heaviest bag will thank you for keeping each piece light enough to lift with one hand. Ask the property in advance whether staff can help with bags, and keep the toddler's pram light and foldable.

When to spend more on family luggage

Family luggage takes a beating: it is overfilled, sat on, dragged up stairs and stacked in car boots. That is where premium brands earn their price, typically from about ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 per piece, through tougher wheels, reinforced corners, strong handles and multi-year international warranties that cover airline damage. If you take two or more trips a year, the cost per trip of a good set is small.
