First-time flyer luggage guide: the essentials
If you are flying for the first time in India, this luggage guide boils down to three rules: carry one cabin bag and one small personal bag within your airline's limits, put liquids over 100 ml, sharp objects and large quantities of anything in your check-in bag, and keep your phone, ID, boarding pass, medicines and power bank with you in the cabin. Get those three right and the airport becomes far less intimidating.
On many Indian domestic economy fares, the cabin allowance is typically one bag of around seven kilos within roughly 55 x 35 x 25 cm, plus a small personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag, and checked baggage is commonly around 15 kilos. Some fares include no checked bag at all. These numbers vary by airline and fare type, so open your booking confirmation and check before you pack.
The rest of this guide walks you through choosing bags, packing them, and every step at the airport, so your first flight feels like an adventure rather than an exam.

Cabin bag vs check-in bag
The cabin bag travels with you and goes in the overhead bin above your seat. It must fit the airline's size and weight limits and must not contain banned items such as knives, scissors with long blades or liquids above 100 ml per container. It is ideal for short trips and for anything valuable or fragile.
The check-in bag is handed over at the counter, travels in the aircraft hold, and is collected from the belt at your destination. It can carry larger liquids, such as shampoo bottles and pickles, and things like nail scissors and tools, but never power banks, spare lithium batteries or valuables like jewellery and cash.
For a weekend, one cabin trolley of around 55 cm is often enough and lets you skip the baggage belt entirely. For a week or more, or if you are carrying gifts, add a medium check-in suitcase of about 65 to 68 cm.
Choosing your first suitcase
For a first-time flyer, a four-wheel spinner in polycarbonate is the most forgiving choice: light, easy to push and tough enough for baggage handling. Look for a built-in combination lock, a telescopic handle that locks firmly and a clear size label on the listing that matches airline cabin dimensions.
Brands such as VIP, Safari, Skybags, American Tourister and Aristocrat offer reliable cabin and medium spinners, while Samsonite, Mokobara and Nasher Miles sit higher with smoother wheels and longer warranties; premium travel bags typically start from about ₹5,000. If you fly rarely, a mid-range bag is fine. If you expect to fly more, spend a little more on wheels and zips.
Choose a colour or add a ribbon or strap so you can recognise your bag instantly on the belt. Dark grey and black cases look alike, and new flyers are often unsure whether a bag is theirs.
Before buying, measure the bag yourself including wheels and handles, because airlines measure the whole thing, not just the shell. A bag sold as 55 cm should measure no more than that from the floor to the top of the closed handle. If you are flying a low-cost carrier with a strict sizer at the gate, that extra centimetre can mean a fee or a forced check-in, which is exactly the kind of surprise a first-time flyer wants to avoid.
What you cannot carry
In the cabin, sharp objects, tools, lighters beyond any permitted allowance, liquids, gels and aerosols over 100 ml per container and certain sports items are commonly restricted. Liquids in small containers should go in a clear resealable bag, ready to take out at security if asked.
In checked baggage, power banks, spare lithium batteries, e-cigarettes and certain flammable items are usually not allowed; power banks and batteries must typically travel in the cabin. Coconuts, especially dried ones, are a well-known item that Indian security has restricted in checked bags due to flammability, so check before you pack one for a puja.
Rules come from aviation security authorities and airlines and can change. Before your first flight, read the restricted items list on your airline's website. When in doubt, leave it at home.
Packing your bags step by step
Lay out everything you plan to take, then remove a third. First-time flyers almost always overpack. Roll clothes to save space, put shoes in a bag along the bottom near the wheels, and place toiletries in a zip bag in case of leaks.
In the cabin bag, keep a small pouch at the top with your ID, printed or digital boarding pass, phone charger, power bank, medicines, earphones and a light shawl or jacket, as cabins can be cold. Keep liquids in a separate clear pouch in an outer pocket so you can reach them at security.
Weigh both bags at home with a luggage scale or a bathroom scale. If the cabin bag is over seven kilos, move heavy items like shoes or books into the check-in bag or wear your heaviest shoes.
At the airport: a calm walkthrough
Arrive about two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one. At the entry gate, show your ID and boarding pass or booking. Many Indian airports now offer facial recognition boarding through DigiYatra for domestic flights, which you can set up in advance if you wish.
Go to your airline's counter or a self-service kiosk to collect your boarding pass and drop your check-in bag. The staff will weigh it, put a tag on it and give you a baggage receipt. Keep that receipt safe; it is your proof if the bag is lost.
Then go through security with your cabin bag and personal item. Remove laptops, power banks and liquids pouches if asked, place your bags, phone, belt and jacket in trays, and walk through the scanner. Collect everything on the other side and check you have it all before walking away.
Boarding and on the plane
Check the gate number on screens and arrive at the gate before boarding time. When your group is called, show your boarding pass and ID. On board, put your cabin trolley wheels-first in the overhead bin and your personal bag under the seat in front of you.
Keep your phone, earphones, water and anything you might need during the flight in the personal bag. Ask cabin crew for help if you cannot lift your bag; it is completely normal to ask.
On landing, wait until the seatbelt sign is off before opening the bins, as bags can shift during the flight. Check the seat pocket and floor for your phone and documents before leaving.
Collecting your checked bag
Follow the signs to baggage claim and look for your flight number on the screens above the belts. Stand near the start of the belt so you see bags as they come out. Check the tag on your bag against your receipt before taking it.
If your bag does not arrive, go to the airline's baggage desk in the arrival area before leaving, show your receipt and file a report. Airlines usually deliver delayed bags to your address.
If the bag is damaged, report it at the desk too, with photographs. Many airlines require damage to be reported within a short time, so do not wait until you get home.
First-flight packing list and final tips
Personal bag: ID, phone, charger, power bank, wallet, medicines, earphones, a pen, tissues and a water bottle (empty at security, fill afterwards). Cabin bag: a change of clothes, toiletries under 100 ml, a light jacket and snacks. Check-in bag: the rest of your clothes, larger toiletries and any gifts.
Wear comfortable clothes and easy shoes, and keep a stylish but practical tote or sling bag as your personal item. You will feel more confident when everything has a place.
Most of all, relax. Airport staff help first-time flyers every day. With the right bags packed the right way, your first flight will be the start of many more.
