What are gajra bun hairstyles?
Gajra bun hairstyles are buns (juda) wrapped or decorated with a string of fresh flowers, usually mogra, jasmine, kanakambaram or tuberose. The classic version is a low centre-parted bun with a gajra wrapped once or twice around it and pinned underneath. Modern versions include braided buns, side buns and messy buns with a gajra placed in a crescent along one side.
The gajra is one of the most enduring elements of Indian festive hair because it adds fragrance, colour and instant tradition to any saree or lehenga look. Done right, it stays fresh and secure through an entire wedding or puja. Here are ten ways to wear it and exactly how to pin it.

How to wear gajra on a bun: the basic method
Make a firm bun first; the gajra needs a solid base. Hold the gajra with the flowers facing outward and place one end under the bun on the side. Wrap it around the bun, following the curve, and tuck the other end underneath. Secure with U-pins every few centimetres, inserting the pin through the thread of the gajra, not the flowers, and push it into the bun.
For a double wrap, use a longer gajra or two shorter ones. Start the second wrap slightly higher or lower than the first so the bun looks fuller. Finish with a couple of bobby pins underneath where the ends meet. Spray water lightly over the flowers to keep them fresh, never hairspray.
Juda with gajra: five classic and modern versions
The classic low juda: centre parting, smooth crown, low bun, full gajra wrap. Ideal for silk sarees and pujas. The braided bun: braid the ponytail before coiling for texture; the gajra sits between the braid loops. The puff and juda: add volume at the crown for height, especially flattering on round faces and petite frames.
The side bun with gajra: place the bun behind one ear and arrange the gajra in a half-moon facing the camera. Perfect for bridesmaids and sangeet sarees. The messy bun with a partial gajra: a loose textured bun with a short gajra on one side for a relaxed, modern feel that suits organza and pastel outfits.
Gajra hairstyle for saree and lehenga
With a Kanjivaram, Banarasi or Paithani saree, the classic juda with a double gajra and a small maang tikka is timeless. With Nauvari sarees, the Maharashtrian ambada bun with a gajra wrapped around it is the traditional choice. With Bengali sarees, a big low bun with a white gajra and a sindoor parting is iconic for Durga Puja and weddings.
With lehengas, the gajra adapts well to braided buns and side buns. Brides often wear several gajras layered across a large bun, sometimes with roses tucked in. With pastel lehengas, a single white string on a messy bun keeps the look delicate.
Mogra gajra hairstyle vs other flowers
Mogra, or Arabian jasmine, has round fluffy blooms and a strong fragrance, so it looks full even in a single strand. Jasmine (malli or chameli) is smaller and works well in long braids, especially in South Indian styles. Kanakambaram, the orange firecracker flower, is often combined with jasmine for contrast. Rose gajras and tuberose strings are popular in North Indian weddings.
Fresh flowers last roughly a day once worn. Buy them the same morning, keep them wrapped in a damp cloth in the fridge and wear them close to the event. For multi-day functions or hot outdoor venues, consider artificial gajras.
Artificial gajra bun: when it makes sense
Artificial gajras made of fabric, foam or pearl beads have improved a lot and look quite realistic in photos. They are lighter, do not wilt, will not attract insects outdoors and can be reused. They are also good for people with flower pollen allergies. Prices usually start at around ₹99 to ₹299 depending on length and material.
Pin them exactly as you would fresh gajras. Pearl and bead versions add shine for evening events, while white foam versions mimic mogra best for daytime pujas.
Mistakes to avoid with a gajra
A weak bun is the most common problem; the gajra pulls it loose within an hour. Always build the bun with U-pins and a few crossed bobby pins first. Another mistake is pinning through the flowers, which crushes them and makes them brown faster. Pin through the thread.
Avoid spraying hairspray directly on fresh flowers; it makes them wilt and turn brown. And do not wrap the gajra too tightly, because that flattens the bun and hides its shape. A gentle wrap that follows the curve looks best.
Step-by-step: the side bun with gajra
Part the hair deeply on one side. Gather all the hair behind the ear on the opposite side and tie a ponytail there, just below the earlobe line. Twist the ponytail, coil it around the base and pin with U-pins. Smooth the front with a little serum so the side sweep looks polished.
Take the gajra and arrange it in a crescent on the outer side of the bun, the side that faces the camera. Pin through the thread at the top, middle and bottom. If the gajra is long, let one end hang loosely down the shoulder for a romantic finish.
This style suits round and square faces because the side placement creates asymmetry that softens the jawline. It also looks wonderful with long earrings on the open side.
Buy tightly closed buds rather than fully open flowers; mogra buds open slowly through the day and keep their scent longer. Wrap them in a wet muslin cloth or a damp paper towel and refrigerate in a box until about thirty minutes before wearing. Do not keep them in a sealed plastic bag for hours, as condensation turns them brown.
Once worn, mist the gajra with water every few hours using a small spray bottle. Avoid strong direct sun where possible, and keep perfume away from the flowers, as alcohol in fragrance speeds wilting.
Brides often wear the most elaborate version: a large low bun covered fully with multiple gajras in a tight spiral, sometimes with red roses or orchids at the centre. In South Indian weddings, the gajra may continue down a braid as part of a poola jada. In North Indian weddings, gajras sit around a bun under the dupatta.
For a big bridal bun, the stylist usually builds it with a bun donut or added hair for size, pins the gajras in layers and then secures the dupatta over the top with U-pins. Discuss the weight and comfort at the trial, as several fresh gajras can be heavy over a long ceremony.
Round faces suit a puff with a slightly higher bun or a side bun with gajra. Long faces look better with a low bun at the nape and a centre parting. Square faces soften with a side bun and loose tendrils. Heart-shaped and oval faces carry the classic low juda beautifully, especially with a small tikka or a simple centre parting.
Gajra on shorter hair
If your hair is shoulder-length, create a small twisted bun at the nape or use a bun donut, then wrap the gajra around it to visually enlarge the bun. You can also pin a short gajra in a curve over a half-up twist, letting the rest of the hair fall. For very short hair, a small gajra pinned behind one ear like a flower clip looks charming with a saree.
Clip-in buns and artificial juda covers also give you the classic gajra look without long hair.
