How to do glitter eyes in brief
For glitter eye makeup for a party, prime the lids, lay down a matching matte or shimmer base shadow, then press glitter on with a fingertip or flat brush over a sticky glitter glue or a damp layer of base. Place it on the centre of the lid, the inner corner or along the lower lash line, keep the rest of the face soft, and remove it with an oil cleanser rather than rubbing.
Glitter is the most fun way to make a party look feel special, from New Year and birthdays to sangeets and concerts. Done right, it catches the light without fallout or looking costume-like. Here is a full step-by-step and placement ideas for different eye shapes.
Glitter eye makeup also works on every Indian skin tone; the trick lies in choosing the right base shade and glitter colour, which we cover below.

Know your glitter types
Pressed glitter shadows are the easiest. They feel like shimmer shadow but carry larger particles, and they apply with a finger.
Liquid glitter shadows come in a tube with a doe-foot applicator. They dry down quickly, last well in humid weather and are ideal for beginners.
Loose glitter has the most impact but needs a glitter glue. Use only cosmetic-grade glitter meant for the eye area; craft glitter can scratch the eye and is not safe.
Glitter liners give a thin sparkling line on the lid or lower lash line and are the subtlest option for office parties.
Biodegradable cosmetic glitters are increasingly available and are a kinder option for the environment. Avoid hair glitter or body glitter near the eyes unless the label states it is eye-safe.
Step 1 to 3: Prep and base
Step 1: do your eyes before your foundation. Glitter falls, and it is easier to clean the under-eye area before the base is on. Alternatively, place loose powder or a strip of tape under the eye to catch fallout.
Step 2: prime the lids with an eyeshadow primer or a thin layer of concealer, set lightly. This stops creasing in humid weather and makes colours look truer.
Step 3: build a base. Blend a warm transition shade, like a soft brown or terracotta for Indian skin, through the crease. Pack a shadow in a similar tone to your glitter onto the lid: brown under gold, burgundy under rose, black or navy under silver. The base means any gaps between glitter particles look intentional.
If you have oily lids, which are common in humid Indian cities, set the primer with a thin layer of translucent powder before applying the base shadow. This prevents the glitter from sliding into the crease.
Step 4 to 6: Glitter application
Step 4: apply a thin layer of glitter glue where the glitter will go, or spray a flat brush with setting spray for pressed glitter.
Step 5: press the glitter on, do not sweep. Use a fingertip for pressed formulas or a flat synthetic brush for loose glitter, tapping it onto the lid in layers. Build from the centre outward.
Step 6: clean up. Use a piece of tape, lightly pressed, to lift stray particles from the cheeks. Then apply liner and mascara, and finish your base.
Build in light layers. It is easier to add more glitter than to remove excess, and multiple thin layers stay put better than one thick one. Work under good, bright light so you can see where particles land.
If any glitter lands on your cheek after foundation, do not wipe it; press tape gently against the skin or use a small fluffy brush to flick it away without disturbing the base.
For extra hold through dancing, finish with a light mist of setting spray held at arm's length.
Placement ideas for different eye shapes
Hooded eyes: the lid disappears when open, so place glitter on the centre of the lid extending slightly above the crease and look in the mirror with eyes open. A glittery inner corner and lower lash line also show well.
Monolid eyes: create a gradient from the lash line upward, with glitter strongest at the lashes and fading out. A glitter liner flick looks striking.
Almond and round eyes: almost any placement works. Try a full glitter lid, a cut-crease with glitter on the lid space or a halo with glitter in the centre.
Small or close-set eyes: put the glitter on the inner corner and the inner half of the lid to brighten and open up the eyes.
If you are a beginner, start with liquid glitter on the centre of the lid. It is the most forgiving placement and flatters almost every eye shape.
Glitter colours for Indian skin and brown eyes
Gold and champagne glitter warm up wheatish skin and make brown eyes look lighter. Copper and bronze are gorgeous on medium and dusky skin. Rose gold is flattering on almost everyone. Silver and icy glitters work best over a dark base on deeper skin so they do not look grey.
Coloured glitters like emerald, sapphire, purple and fuchsia make brown eyes pop because they contrast with warm irises. A plum glitter on dark brown eyes is especially beautiful for winter parties.
For festive Indian outfits, a gold or copper glitter echoes zari and gota work beautifully, while for western cocktail looks, a silver or rose gold glitter suits satin and metallic fabrics.
Three glitter looks for different parties
New Year or birthday night: a full lid of gold or silver glitter over a dark brown base, winged liner and false lashes, with a nude-brown lip. This is the most dramatic look and pairs well with a simple black or satin dress.
Sangeet or Diwali party: a warm bronze transition shade, copper glitter on the centre of the lid, and gold glitter on the inner corner. Add kohl on the waterline and a red or maroon lip. It complements lehengas, sarees and indo-western outfits.
Concert or college party: a glitter liner flick in blue, green or purple over a bare lid, or a sprinkle of glitter along the lower lash line. Keep the rest of the face fresh with a tinted lip oil. It is fun, quick and very 2026.
Balancing the rest of the look
With sparkly eyes, keep the lip soft: a nude, a tinted gloss or a muted rose. A defined brow and a little highlighter tie the face together. If the outfit is heavily sequinned, go subtler with glitter liner or an inner-corner sparkle so you do not look over-decorated.
Glitter eyes look wonderful with plain satin or black dresses, metallic co-ords and simple sarees with a shimmery border. Match the glitter tone to your jewellery metal for cohesion.
Also clean the lenses of your glasses if you wear them; glitter particles love to settle there.
Removing glitter safely
Never rub glitter off. Press a cotton pad soaked in an oil cleanser or micellar water on the closed eye for thirty seconds, then wipe gently downward. Use tape to lift any stubborn particles from lashes, and wash your face with a gentle cleanser afterwards.
If glitter gets into your eye, do not rub; rinse with clean water and blink. Contact lens wearers should insert lenses before applying glitter and remove them before removing makeup.
Store loose glitter tightly closed and away from heat, and clean brushes after each use so glitter does not transfer into your everyday makeup.
Finish with a nourishing eye cream or a dab of aloe gel, especially after a long night, to soothe the delicate skin around the eyes.
