Why haircut terms matter
Knowing the right haircut terms to tell your stylist is the easiest way to avoid a disappointing cut. Words like layers, blunt, point-cut, face-framing and texturise mean specific things, and using them alongside two or three reference photos lets your stylist understand exactly where you want length, weight and movement.
Miscommunication is behind most bad haircuts. One person's slight trim is another's five centimetres, and one stylist's step cut is another's layered cut. A shared vocabulary closes that gap, especially when trying a trending named cut like a butterfly or wolf cut that may be interpreted differently from salon to salon.
Here is a practical glossary, grouped by what you are describing, plus a script you can use at your next appointment.

Length terms
Dusting: removing only the very ends, a few millimetres, to tidy split ends without losing length. Trim: usually one to three centimetres. Always show with your fingers rather than saying a little. Perimeter or hemline: the outer edge of your haircut, the line where the ends sit.
Collarbone, shoulder, armpit, mid-back: the landmark lengths stylists use. Name the landmark you want your longest hair to reach. Lob: a long bob, between the jaw and the collarbone. Bob: usually jaw to chin length.
Be specific about which hair you are measuring. If you have layers, say where you want the longest layer to fall and where the shortest should start. Many disappointments happen because the stylist measured the shortest pieces while you were thinking about the longest.
Layer terms
Long layers: layers starting around or below the shoulders, adding subtle movement. Short layers: starting higher, at the cheekbones or chin, adding more volume and shape. Face-framing layers: shorter pieces only around the face. Crown layers: short layers at the top of the head for lift, used in butterfly and wolf cuts.
Ghost layers or internal layers: hidden layers underneath the top section to remove bulk without visible layering. Disconnected layers: layers that deliberately do not blend, as in a jellyfish or hime cut. Blended layers: layers that flow smoothly into one another.
Named trend cuts are mostly combinations of these terms. A butterfly cut is crown layers plus face-framing layers over long, blended lengths. A wolf cut is short crown layers, curtain bangs and a longer back. If a stylist does not know a trend name, describing it in these terms will get you there.
Texture and technique terms
Blunt cut: hair cut straight across for a solid, sharp line. Point-cutting: snipping into the ends vertically to soften a blunt line; good for natural-looking ends. Slide-cutting: gliding open scissors down the hair to remove weight and create movement.
Razor cutting: using a razor to create feathery, piecey texture; great for shags but can fray fine or dry hair. Thinning or texturising: removing bulk, often with thinning shears. On thick hair in humid climates, ask for light or scissor-based thinning to avoid frizz.
Dry cutting: cutting on dry hair, ideal for curls, waves and fringes, since you can see how the hair actually falls.
Also useful: wet cut versus dry cut. Most cuts are done wet for precision, but if your hair is wavy or curly, ask for at least a dry check at the end.
Shape and fringe terms
V cut and U cut: the shape of your hemline at the back, pointed or rounded. Step cut: visible tiers of length. Graduation: hair stacked shorter at the nape and longer above, common in bobs for a rounded back.
Curtain bangs: centre-parted fringe sweeping to both sides. Bottleneck bangs: narrow at the centre, curving out at the sides. Blunt bangs: a solid straight fringe. Wispy or see-through bangs: thin, light fringe that shows the forehead behind. Micro or baby bangs: very short fringe above the brows. Sidelocks: blunt face pieces, as in the hime cut.
Undercut: a section, usually at the nape or sides, clipped very short under longer hair. Used in some pixie cuts or for thick hair to reduce bulk. Tapered nape: hair gradually shortened towards the neck for a neat finish on short cuts.
A simple script for your next salon visit
Start with your routine: I have about five minutes for hair in the morning and usually air-dry, or, I blow-dry most days. Then your goal: I want to keep my length but add movement and some face framing. Then specifics: shortest layer at my chin, longest length at my mid-back, soft point-cut ends, light thinning only.
Show your photos and say what you like in each: I like the bangs in this one and the layers in that one. Finally, ask the stylist to repeat it back and to tell you honestly if it will suit your hair. A good stylist will adjust the plan based on your texture.
Just a trim: too vague. Show the exact length with your fingers. Do whatever you think: only say this if you truly trust the stylist and are open to change. Thin it out a lot: on thick Indian hair in humid climates this can lead to frizz. Ask for weight removal with controlled techniques instead.
Make it like this photo: a good start, but add what specifically you like in the photo and explain your hair's texture and routine. Short layers: short compared to what? Name the landmark, such as chin or cheekbone.
Clear, specific language makes the cut faster, reduces stress and leads to results you will love.
Choosing reference photos the right way
Pick photos of people with hair similar to yours in thickness, texture and colour. A cut on fine, light-brown, straight hair will not look the same on thick, black, wavy hair. Include a photo of what you do not want, which is often just as useful.
Try to find both a styled and an unstyled image. Many trending cuts look very different air-dried. Save photos showing the back view if the hemline shape matters to you.
Also mention your colour history, past chemical treatments and any hair fall concerns. These affect how the stylist cuts and how your hair responds.
If you are trying a new salon, save your reference photos and notes in one place on your phone so you can share them quickly.
Questions worth asking your stylist
Will this cut work with my natural texture? How long will it take to style daily? How often will I need trims? Which products do you recommend for this cut? What will it look like when it grows out in two months?
These questions help you judge whether the trend fits your life, and they signal to the stylist that you want a cut tailored to you, not a copy of a photo.
Ask about aftercare as well. Some cuts need a particular brush or product to look like the salon finish, and knowing this up front saves money on products you do not need.
After the cut: styling and accessories
Ask your stylist to show you one quick styling method before you leave, and note which brush and products they used. Many new cuts look best half-up or with one side tucked, so having a couple of claw clips or slim barrettes at home helps on busy days.
Read our guides to trending cuts on the blog for detailed styling of each one.
Over time, keep a short note of what worked and what did not after each cut. It makes every future salon visit easier.
