Which Hairstyles Flatter a Double Chin?
The best hairstyles for double chin draw the eye upward and carry the hair's endpoint well past the jaw: collarbone-length lobs, long face-framing layers, high buns and ponytails with crown volume, deep side parts and side-swept or curtain bangs. Skip chin-length bobs, blunt cuts that end at the jaw and low buns sitting at the nape, because all three put a line or a weight exactly where you would rather not draw attention.
A double chin, or a little softness under the jaw, is extremely common and not only linked to weight. Genetics, the angle of the jawbone, posture and even the way you hold your phone for selfies all play a role, and plenty of slim women have one. Hairstyles cannot change anatomy, but hair is a frame, and frames decide where the eye lands first. Used well, your cut and styling can make the jawline look cleaner and the neck look longer in person and in photos.

The Endpoint Rule: Where Your Hair Stops Matters
The eye naturally travels to the place where hair ends, because it is a strong line against skin or clothing. If that line sits at the chin, it acts like an arrow pointing at the area under the jaw. Move it to the collarbone or lower and the arrow points to the neckline and shoulders instead, which instantly reads as longer and more defined.
This is why a lob that ends two or three fingers below the jaw usually looks dramatically better than a bob that grazes the chin, even though the difference is only a few centimetres. If you love short hair, there is a workaround: a pixie or very short crop that sits well above the jaw also avoids the problem, because the endpoint moves up to the ears and the neck is fully on show.
For curly hair, the same rule applies. Ask for curls shaped so the fullest point sits below the jaw rather than at it, and wear them with a side part.
Ten Styles, From Easiest to Most Polished
Quick everyday options come first. One, a deep side part on open hair, which creates a diagonal line across the face. Two, a high ponytail at the crown with a little teasing underneath for lift. Three, a high messy bun with two thin tendrils at the temples, not at the jaw. Four, a half-up top knot that lifts the crown while the rest of the hair falls long. Five, a side braid that starts high near the temple and falls over one shoulder, pulling the eye down past the chin.
Five more for when you have time. Six, curtain bangs that draw focus to the eyes. Seven, a long side-swept fringe. Eight, soft waves that begin below the jaw rather than at cheek level. Nine, a sleek high ballerina bun for formal events. Ten, a long, layered blow-dry with the front pieces flicked away from the face. Each one either adds height, adds diagonals or moves the endpoint, the three tools that flatter the jaw area.
Haircuts to Ask For
A collarbone lob is the most versatile cut. Ask for it slightly longer at the front than the back, so the front pieces angle downward and lead the eye toward the neckline. Long layers with face-framing pieces that start below the jaw are the best choice if you prefer long hair. Ask your stylist to point-cut the ends so they look soft and move when you turn your head.
Things to avoid at the salon: a blunt chin-length bob, a rounded bob that curves under at the jaw, and heavy layers that start at the chin and create a shelf of volume right at the jaw. If your hair is thick, ask for the area around the jaw to be texturised so it lies flat rather than puffing out. A bit of root lift at the crown, built into the cut with subtle crown layers, gives every style a head start.
Bring two or three reference photos of women with similar hair texture. A collarbone lob on thick wavy hair behaves very differently from the same cut on fine straight hair, so the right photos help your stylist get the length and layers right.
Updos That Lift the Whole Face
High is your friend. A top knot or high bun pulls the eye upward and makes the neck look longer, which in turn makes the area under the chin less noticeable. Gather the hair at the crown, gently backcomb the base of the ponytail, twist and pin. If your hair is heavy, split the ponytail in two, twist each half and wrap them around each other so the bun does not sag by lunchtime.
Low buns at the nape do the opposite: they add a mass of hair right at the back of the jaw level and keep the eye low. If your dress code calls for a low bun, place it at the mid-back of the head instead of the nape, add a little crown volume and keep the face-framing pieces long. For a saree or lehenga, a high bun decorated with a gajra or jewelled pins is both traditional and flattering.
For office days when a high bun feels too casual, try a mid-height sleek ponytail with the crown slightly lifted. Wrap a thin section of hair around the elastic and pin it underneath. It looks polished and keeps the eye up, without the bounce of a high ponytail.
Posture, Angles and Photo Tricks
Posture makes a bigger difference than most haircuts. Stand tall with your shoulders relaxed and your neck lengthened, and push your forehead slightly toward the camera with your chin parallel to the floor. That small forward movement tightens the jawline in photos. Tilting the chin down, which many people do when they feel self-conscious, makes the softness more visible.
For selfies, hold the phone slightly above eye level rather than below. Pair this with hair that has crown lift and a side part, and the jaw looks naturally more defined. A light contour along the underside of the jaw, blended toward the neck, is another subtle makeup trick that works alongside your hairstyle.
Earrings and Necklines That Elongate
Long, linear earrings, slim drops and threader earrings carry a vertical line from the ear down, which visually lengthens the neck. Medium chandbalis and drop jhumkas work for ethnic outfits as long as they hang below the jaw rather than sitting as wide studs. Avoid big, round studs and tight chokers, which add horizontal emphasis near the chin.
V-necks, deep scoops and sweetheart necklines open up the neck area, as do collared shirts worn with the top buttons open. High necks and turtlenecks can work with a high bun but are trickier with open hair. A long pendant necklace that falls at the chest leads the eye down past the jaw and is an easy everyday choice.
Mistakes That Draw Attention to the Chin
The chin-length bob is the biggest one, followed by rounded curls bunched at the jaw and low, heavy buns. Flat hair with zero crown volume pulls the whole face downward, and very tight slicked-back styles with no face-framing expose the full jaw outline without any softening.
Watch out for chunky scarves wrapped high around the neck with open hair, which stack volume at the jaw, and for choker-plus-bob combinations. None of these are forbidden; if you love them, wear them with posture and confidence. But if you want the most flattering everyday look, a collarbone lob with a side part and crown lift is the most reliable formula.
