What hairstyles for video calls need to do
Good hairstyles for video calls keep your face clearly visible, add a little volume at the crown so you do not look flat on a webcam, and stay neat in a frame that only shows your head and shoulders. Think soft half-ups, tucked waves, sleek low ponies swept over one shoulder, and a fresh, defined part.
Webcams flatten everything. They sit at a fixed angle, usually a little below or level with your eyes, and the compressed image hides texture and dimension. Hair that looks fine in a mirror can look limp, frizzy or shapeless on screen, and a pony that is invisible from the front can make you look as if your hair is scraped back too severely.
The good news is that you only need to style what the camera sees. Here is how to choose a video-friendly style, the ten-minute routines that work, and the lighting and framing tricks that make any hair look better on a call.

Start with the part and the face frame
The part is the first thing anyone notices on camera, because it sits right at the top of the frame. Make it clean and deliberate with the tail of a comb. A soft middle part looks modern, while a deep side part adds volume and flatters round and square faces.
Pull two thin face-framing pieces forward, or let curtain bangs fall naturally. These soften the jawline and fill the empty space between your face and the edge of the frame.
Avoid scraping every strand back tightly. On screen, that reads as harsh and makes the forehead look larger than it is.
Check how your part looks on camera rather than in the mirror. The camera mirrors your image differently, and many people discover that their part looks crooked or wider on screen. Turn on your camera preview, adjust the part with a comb, and smooth the area around it with a little cream so the roots do not stick up unevenly. It takes thirty seconds and makes a noticeable difference.
Add volume where the camera sees it
A webcam squashes the crown, so a little lift goes a long way. Flip your part to the opposite side for instant root lift, or backcomb a small section at the crown and smooth the top layer over it.
Velcro rollers are a WFH secret. Put two or three at the crown while you make coffee or answer emails, then remove them right before the call. The volume lasts for hours and requires no heat if your hair is slightly damp when rolled.
A light texture spray or dry shampoo at the roots also adds body, especially on fine hair that tends to look plastered on screen.
Rollers also work on dry hair if you mist each section lightly with water before rolling, which is handy on mornings with back-to-back calls.
Five camera-friendly hairstyles
The half-up twist: twist a section from each temple back and pin at the crown. It shows length on camera while keeping your face open.
The side-swept low pony: tie a low pony slightly off-centre and pull it over one shoulder so it is visible in the frame. It looks polished, not scraped back.
Tucked waves: wear hair open with soft waves, and tuck one side behind your ear to show an earring. The asymmetry adds interest without effort. Low claw-clip twist: fine for internal calls, as long as you pull out face-framing pieces. Sleek low bun with a middle part: best for formal online interviews and client calls.
If your hair is very long, remember that the frame only shows the top half of it. Pulling a section forward over one or both shoulders makes the length visible on screen. If you tie it back, the camera simply sees a flat head with no hair at the sides, which can make you look like you have much shorter or thinner hair than you do.
Hairstyles for online interviews
For online job interviews, choose the most polished, least distracting option you know well. A sleek low bun or a smooth half-up keeps hair still, so you are not fidgeting with it when nervous.
Smooth any flyaways at the hairline with a toothbrush and a light hairspray. Small halos of frizz become surprisingly visible when the camera focuses on your face against a plain wall.
Keep accessories minimal: small studs or tiny hoops, and no bright clips. The recruiter should remember your answers, not your hair.
Lighting and angle make hair look better
Place your main light in front of you, not behind. Sitting with a window at your back makes hair look frizzy and dark, and erases its shape. A window in front or slightly to one side gives natural shine.
Raise your laptop so the camera is level with your eyes. Looking down into a webcam shows the top of your head more than your face, which exaggerates flatness and makes any oil at the roots more noticeable.
Make sure there is a little distance between you and the wall behind. A small gap lets the edges of your hair separate from the background so it reads as fuller.
Background effects and virtual backgrounds can make the edges of your hair blur or flicker. Smoother styles like sleek ponies and buns are handled better by these filters than curly, voluminous or wispy styles. If you use a virtual background often, tie your hair up or smooth flyaways, and test the effect before an important call.
Quick fixes for unwashed hair before a call
If your call is in five minutes and your hair is not washed, spray dry shampoo at the roots, wait two minutes, massage and brush. Then do a half-up twist so the oily crown is gathered and the lengths fall forward.
A headband is also a quick, camera-friendly fix. A padded or knotted headband hides the part entirely and frames the face, and it looks deliberate.
Alternatively, tie a sleek low pony and pull it forward. With good front lighting, nobody will notice day-three hair.
What to avoid on camera
Avoid very busy accessories, such as large printed scrunchies at the front or big bows, for professional calls. They pull focus and can look childish on screen.
Avoid hair that covers your face. Long fringes and curtains of hair over the eyes can make expressions hard to read and may trigger video background effects to blur the edges of your face.
Avoid top knots for formal calls. On camera, a top knot often sits right at the edge of the frame and can look cut off or too casual.
If you take many calls through the day, build a small hair kit beside your laptop: a comb, a claw clip, a few bobby pins and a mini serum. Between calls you can re-tie or re-pin in thirty seconds, which keeps you looking fresh at the 6 pm meeting as well as the 10 am stand-up.
A ten-minute WFH hair routine
Minute one to two: brush out and freshen roots with dry shampoo if needed. Minute three: make a clean part. Minute four to six: put two Velcro rollers at the crown and leave them while you do a quick bit of makeup.
Minute seven to eight: remove the rollers and shake out. Choose the half-up twist or tucked waves. Minute nine: smooth flyaways with a drop of serum on your palms. Minute ten: check your frame on the camera preview and adjust any strands.
This routine works for daily stand-ups, client calls and online classes, and it keeps you looking put-together without full styling every morning.
