Hairstyles without hair ties you can do anywhere
The best hairstyles without hair ties are the pencil bun, the self-knot bun, the twisted chignon, the knotted half-up and the looped low pony. All of them use your hair itself, or a simple object like a pen or pencil, to lock the style in place, so you can tie up your hair in an exam hall, at a desk or on a bus with nothing in your bag.
Everyone has had the moment: the scrunchie snapped, the last band is on someone else's wrist, and your hair is sticking to your neck in a hot classroom. These styles have been used across India for generations, often with a pencil, a chopstick or simply a deft twist, and they hold surprisingly well once you master them.
Here are eight no-band looks, step by step, plus which ones suit thick, fine and short hair, and the objects in your bag that can stand in for a clip.
Learning two or three of these styles also means you never have to resort to harsh office rubber bands, which can snap strands and are painful to pull out.

The pencil bun
Gather your hair at the back of your head and twist it into a rope. Coil the rope into a bun at your desired height, and hold it in place with one hand.
Insert a pen or pencil horizontally through the top edge of the bun, catching some hair at the base. Then turn the pencil upright, pushing it down through the bun and into the hair underneath. The pencil now locks the bun.
This works best on medium to long hair that is thick enough to grip. For fine hair, use two pencils crossed in an X. Always use a clean pencil without sharp nibs facing your scalp.
Chopsticks work just like pencils, and their length makes them better for very thick hair. If you are eating at a Chinese or Japanese restaurant and your hair is bothering you, a clean pair of disposable wooden chopsticks will happily hold a bun for the rest of the evening. Hairpins designed in a stick shape are also a stylish permanent alternative.
The self-knot bun
Split your hair into two equal sections at the nape. Tie them into a knot, exactly like the first step of tying shoelaces. Then tie a second knot on top.
Tuck the remaining ends under the knot. For long hair, you can tie a third knot. The bun holds itself without any elastic.
It suits long and thick hair best. On silky hair, add a little texture spray first or the knot will slide.
Practise the self-knot on second-day hair first. Freshly washed hair slips too much for a beginner. Once you are comfortable, it becomes the quickest emergency style and can be done in under thirty seconds. It is also one of the gentlest on hair because there is no metal, plastic or elastic pulling at the strands.
If your hair is layered, tuck shorter pieces into the knot with your fingertips before tightening it, so nothing pokes out at the sides.
The twisted chignon and French twist
Gather all your hair at the nape and twist it upward, flat against the back of your head. Tuck the ends inside the twist at the top.
If you have even one bobby pin, use it to anchor the top of the twist. Without pins, the friction of the twist itself can hold for a while, especially on textured or second-day hair.
It looks elegant enough for office meetings, which makes it a useful emergency style when you are already dressed up.
Twisted chignons look especially elegant on wavy hair, which grips itself better than very straight, silky hair. If yours slips, give the twist an extra turn before tucking the ends, and consider tucking a pencil inside the twist for extra hold.
The looped low pony
Gather your hair in a low pony. Wrap the length of the pony around the base twice, then tuck the ends through the loop you have made at the base.
It looks like a sleek, wrapped pony and holds well on medium-thick hair. It is great for long lectures or exams when you need hair off your face.
If your hair is very long, you can repeat the loop a few times to make it more secure.
The looped low pony is also a smart solution when your band is too loose. If your only elastic has stretched out, use the loop technique and then add the loose band on top for extra security. Combining methods gives you surprising staying power for a long day of classes or meetings.
It is neat enough for an office presentation too.
The knotted half-up
Take a small section from each temple, bring them to the back of your head and tie them in a knot. Tie a second knot to secure it.
The rest of your hair stays open. It is one of the prettiest no-tie hairstyles and suits wavy hair particularly well.
It works on shoulder-length hair and longer. For shorter hair, take thinner sections closer to the crown.
For a more secure knotted half-up, tie the two sections twice and then tuck the ends under the knot. On very silky hair, a quick spritz of dry shampoo before knotting helps. This style also looks lovely with a fresh flower tucked into the knot for a summer brunch or a casual festive day.
Using objects as hair accessories
Pens, pencils, chopsticks and even a folded dupatta or scarf can tie up hair in an emergency. A scarf or dupatta can be wrapped around a pony and knotted, or tied as a headband.
A rubber band from a file or lunch box should be a last resort. These bands are very harsh, tear hair when removed, and should be cut out rather than pulled.
A safety pin can hold a small twist or a fringe back for a short time. Make sure it is closed and facing away from the scalp.
Ribbons, shoelaces and even a thin strip of fabric from a dupatta can also tie a pony in an emergency. Wrap them around twice and tie a firm knot or a bow.
Which no-tie styles work for which hair
Thick and long hair holds every style, especially the self-knot and pencil bun. Fine hair needs texture spray or dry shampoo to grip; the looped low pony and knotted half-up work best.
Shoulder-length hair suits the knotted half-up and a small twisted chignon with one pin.
Very short hair has the fewest options, but a twisted fringe tucked behind the ear or pinned with a single clip is enough to keep hair off your face.
Short hair can also use the twisted side technique. Take a small section near the temple, twist it backward several times and tuck the end into the hair behind the ear. Hair friction holds it for an hour or two, which is often enough to get through an exam or a meeting.
Always keep a backup in your bag
Once you have survived a no-tie day, build a small kit: two coil ties, a claw clip and a few bobby pins in a pouch inside your bag. Wear a coil tie on your wrist like a bracelet.
Fabric scrunchies also double as bracelets and look stylish with casual outfits. They are easier to find in a messy bag than thin elastics.
A small mirror and a travel comb complete the kit, so you can style anywhere.
