Heatless curls: how they work
Heatless curls are created by setting slightly damp hair around a soft tool or into braids or twists, letting it dry fully, often overnight, and then releasing it. Popular methods include the robe-tie or satin curling rod, braids, twisted buns, sock buns and flexi rods. Hair should be about 80 percent dry, not soaking, so it sets without staying wet for hours.
They are the kindest way to get waves, especially if you straighten or curl often. Below are seven methods, which hair types they suit and the troubleshooting tips that make the difference.
They also save time on busy mornings. You do the work at night and wake up styled, which is ideal before office events, weekend outings or a day of family visits during festivals.

Prep for heatless curls
Start with freshly washed or lightly dampened hair. Detangle with a wide-toothed comb. Apply a light mousse, curl cream or setting lotion to give hold; fine hair benefits from mousse, thick hair from a cream.
Hair should be damp, not soaking. Soaking hair may not dry by morning, which leaves limp waves and a damp scalp. If you are setting at night, wash in the evening and let hair air dry for an hour first, or rough dry with a dryer on low heat until mostly dry.
You can also set heatless curls on dry hair by misting lightly with water or setting spray; results are looser.
Use the same amount of product on both sides of your head so the curls match, and comb each section smooth before setting; any tangles you set in will show as frizz in the morning.
If you have a sensitive scalp, avoid setting very tight sections, which can feel uncomfortable while you sleep.
Method 1: robe tie or satin curling rod
Place the rod or a soft robe belt across the top of your head, centred, with ends hanging down either side. Clip it in place at the crown with a claw clip. Take a section of hair from the front on one side, wrap it around the rod, and keep adding hair as you wrap, like a French braid, down to the ends. Secure the end with a scrunchie. Repeat on the other side.
Sleep on it, then unwrap in the morning and gently separate the curls with your fingers. This creates bouncy blowout-style curls and is the most popular heatless method for long hair. Satin curling rods are gentler than cotton robe belts and reduce frizz.
Tip: wrap hair away from your face for an open, flattering curl.
Satin rods also come in different thicknesses; thinner rods give tighter curls, thicker ones give big bouncy waves. For very long hair, wrap more hair per twist so the rod is fully covered.
Method 2 and 3: braids and twists
Braid waves: one big braid gives loose, gentle waves; two braids give more even waves; many small braids give tight, crimped texture. Braid damp hair, tie the ends with small scrunchies and sleep. In the morning, undo and run fingers through.
Twisted buns: split damp hair into two sections, twist each tightly away from the face and coil into buns, securing with scrunchies or U-pins. Release in the morning for spiral waves.
French braid waves: start the braid at the crown for waves that begin closer to the root.
Two braids placed slightly behind the ears give the most balanced waves. For extra volume at the roots, start the braids higher, closer to the crown.
If you have layered hair, pin shorter layers into the braid with bobby pins so they do not poke out straight in the morning.
Method 4 and 5: sock bun and flexi rods
Sock bun: cut the toe off a clean sock and roll it into a donut. Put hair in a high damp ponytail, slide the sock donut to the ends, and roll the hair around it down to the scalp. Secure and sleep. You get big, bouncy curls.
Flexi rods: wrap small damp sections around foam or flexible rods from the ends up and bend the rods to secure. These give defined, uniform curls and are great for shorter hair and natural curls. They take longer to set up but give the most defined result.
Sleep with a satin scarf over rods to keep them in place.
For thick hair, use more sections with any of these methods so each one dries through by morning.
Method 6 and 7: headband wrap and pin curls
Headband wrap: place a stretchy headband on your head, then tuck small sections of hair around and over it, working from the front to the back. It gives soft, beachy waves.
Pin curls: wind small damp sections around your finger into flat coils and pin them to your head with bobby pins. It is a classic vintage method that creates defined curls.
These are great for shoulder-length hair and bobs.
Pin curls are also a great base for vintage-inspired looks at themed parties.
Troubleshooting heatless curls
Curls fell flat: hair was too dry or too fine. Use a stronger mousse and slightly more dampness. Curls are too frizzy: use satin tools, sleep on a satin pillowcase and avoid brushing curls; finger comb instead.
Hair is still damp in the morning: you started too wet or hair is very thick. Start drier or set earlier. Weird bends or kinks: secure ends smoothly and avoid tight elastics; use scrunchies.
Curls too tight: wait a few hours, they loosen, or brush gently. Uneven curls: take equal sections on both sides.
If you are new to heatless curls, try a method on a weekend first. Each person's hair sets differently, so it may take one or two attempts to find the right dampness and product amount.
Making heatless curls look polished in the morning
How you take the set out matters as much as how you put it in. Wait until hair is completely dry; touch the inside of a section near the tool to check. Undo gently, starting from the ends, and avoid pulling on curls.
Separate curls with your fingers, not a brush, unless you want a glamorous brushed-out wave. For a smooth finish, rub a drop of serum between your palms and lightly scrunch through the lengths. Flip your head upside down and shake the roots for volume.
Style the curls: a half-up claw clip, a velvet headband or a side part with a barrette all look beautiful with heatless waves. Finish with a flexible hairspray, especially on humid days.
If one section did not set well, wrap it around your finger, mist lightly with water and clip it while you do your makeup, or touch it up with a curling tool on low heat.
Coloured and keratin-treated hair also benefits from heatless methods, since it is more porous and heat-sensitive. Use a slightly richer cream so the ends do not dry out as they set.
Fringe and face-framing layers can be set separately on a small velcro roller while you sleep.
Heatless curls by hair type and length
Long hair: the robe-tie or curling rod is best. Medium hair: braids or twisted buns. Short hair and bobs: flexi rods, pin curls or the headband wrap. Fine hair: smaller sections and mousse for better hold. Thick hair: more sections and longer drying time.
Natural curls: flexi rods and twist-outs enhance definition without heat. Straight hair that drops curls quickly: use setting lotion and tight sections.
Heatless curls are a great way to rest hair between heat-styling days.
