A rose-oud, a vanilla-sandalwood or a soft musky amber feels intimate and warm. Apply lightly to pulse points and perhaps a mist on a shawl, so the scent stays close.

Remember that wood smoke from bonfires and fireplaces clings to hair and clothing. It can be charming, but it will mix with your perfume. Smoky, resinous scents such as incense, birch tar or vetiver harmonise with it naturally, while delicate florals may be overwhelmed. If you want your fragrance to remain clear, sit a little away from the smoke, and air your jacket outside overnight so it does not carry the smell into the next day.

Packing perfume for hill travel

For road trips up winding mountain roads, pack perfume securely so bottles do not roll and break. Wrap them in clothing and place them in the centre of your bag. Altitude and pressure changes can occasionally push liquid out of atomisers, so secure caps and place bottles in a zip-lock bag.

If you are flying to a hill destination such as Srinagar, Leh or Bagdogra for Darjeeling, keep travel-size atomisers within your airline's cabin liquid limits, and check the current rules before you fly. Cold is generally kinder to perfume than heat, but avoid leaving bottles in freezing cars overnight, because extreme temperature swings are still not good for fragrance. Choosing a hill station scent

Before your trip, test candidate scents on cooler days at home, or in an air-conditioned room, to get a sense of how they will behave in cold air. Wear them through a day and evening and see whether they feel cosy and present or thin. Pay attention to the drydown, because in cold weather the base notes will be what you smell most of the time.
