What is a hime cut?
A hime cut is a Japanese haircut with straight, blunt side pieces, called sidelocks, cut at cheekbone or jaw length around the face, worn with long, sleek hair behind and usually a blunt fringe. Hime means princess in Japanese, and the cut has a regal, graphic look that has become a 2026 favourite for straight-haired women.
The style traces back to the Heian period in Japan, when court women wore very long hair with shorter face-framing pieces. It was later adopted by anime and fashion subcultures and is now a mainstream trend. The modern version is often softer, with sidelocks that are slightly blended rather than razor-sharp.
Long, straight, dark hair, which many Indian women have, is the perfect canvas for a hime cut. The contrast of blunt lines against glossy length looks striking.
Part of its appeal is how instantly it changes long hair without sacrificing length. Only the sidelocks and fringe are short, so you keep your braid and bun options, which matters for many Indian women who need traditional styles for festivals and family events.

The three parts of a hime cut
The fringe: usually a blunt, eyebrow-length fringe that runs straight across the forehead. Some modern versions skip it or use wispy bangs instead. The sidelocks: the defining feature. These are blunt sections on either side of the face, typically cut at the cheekbone, jaw or chin, which fall straight down and frame the face like curtains.
The length: the rest of the hair is kept long, usually past the shoulders and often to the mid-back or beyond, with a blunt or lightly softened hemline. Understanding these three parts helps you mix and match. For example, a soft hime cut keeps the sidelocks but drops the fringe, making it easier to wear daily.
The proportions are what make the cut look modern or dated. Sidelocks that are too narrow look like stray strands; sidelocks that are too wide eat into the length and make the hair look thin behind. A good rule is to take the section from the front hairline to just in front of the ear.
Who suits the hime cut
Straight hair shows the cut's clean lines best. Rebonded or naturally straight Indian hair works perfectly. Wavy hair can carry a soft hime, but the sidelocks will curve; you will need to straighten them for the classic look.
Face shapes: oval and long faces suit cheekbone-length sidelocks. Round faces should choose sidelocks at the jaw or chin, which create vertical lines and slim the face. Square faces suit sidelocks at the chin, with slightly softened ends. Heart-shaped faces benefit from sidelocks that hit just below the cheekbones, adding width at the lower face.
If you have a very prominent cowlick near the temples, ask your stylist how the sidelocks will fall before committing.
Your jewellery habits matter too. Sidelocks frame the ears, so if you love statement earrings, a hime cut displays them like a picture frame.
How to ask for a hime cut
Show reference photos and clearly describe where the sidelocks should end. Decide whether you want a blunt fringe, wispy bangs or no fringe. Ask the stylist to section the sidelocks from just in front of the ears, keeping the section narrow enough not to remove too much length, and to cut them blunt or lightly softened depending on your preference.
Most stylists charge a regular haircut rate plus a little extra for precision, typically from about ₹600 to ₹2,000. Ask for the sidelocks to be cut dry if your hair has any wave. The rest of the hair should simply be trimmed with a blunt or softly blunt hem.
If you are worried about commitment, ask for the sidelocks a little longer than the reference photo on the first visit. Once you see how they fall and whether you enjoy styling them, they can be shortened in minutes at the next trim. Going longer, of course, means waiting for growth.
Styling the hime cut daily
The classic hime look is sleek and glossy. Blow-dry your hair straight with a paddle brush, then flat-iron the sidelocks and fringe for crisp lines. Apply a light serum to the lengths for shine. The whole routine takes about 15 minutes.
For a softer look, add a gentle inward curve to the sidelocks with a round brush, and wave the long hair loosely. This works beautifully for weddings and parties.
To give the cut a break, tie the long hair into a low ponytail and leave the sidelocks and fringe out. It still looks styled and shows off the cut's structure.
Brushing the sidelocks straight down with a fine comb after flat-ironing keeps their edges clean. A few drops of serum on your palms, smoothed over the surface, tames flyaways without weighing the hair down.
Hime cut with Indian outfits
The hime cut pairs strikingly with ethnic wear because it echoes the symmetry of traditional jewellery. Try it with a silk saree, a sleek low bun at the back and the sidelocks framing jhumkas or chandbalis. A maang tikka sits elegantly with a centre part and blunt fringe.
For western wear, it suits minimal, structured outfits: a black turtleneck, tailored trousers, a satin slip dress. Pearl earrings or hair clips complement the princess vibe.
Hime cut problems and how to fix them
Sidelocks flicking out: cut them slightly longer, and train them inward with a round brush or flat iron. Sidelocks looking thin: the section may be too narrow; ask for a slightly wider section at your next trim. Fringe getting oily: use dry shampoo before styling and an oil-free forehead routine.
Frizz in humidity: apply an anti-humidity spray and carry a mini flat iron for touch-ups if needed. Many women in humid cities opt for a smoothing treatment to make the hime cut easier.
Uneven sidelocks: hair grows at different rates on each side, and one sidelock may look longer after a few weeks. A quick precision trim fixes this; do not try to even them at home with kitchen scissors.
Soft hime cut vs classic hime cut
The classic hime cut has three sharp, blunt elements: a straight fringe, sidelocks cut at an exact line and a blunt hemline. It is graphic and theatrical, the version most associated with Japanese fashion editorials and anime characters. It looks spectacular on poker-straight hair but demands regular trims and straightening.
The soft hime cut, which is what most women actually wear in 2026, keeps the sidelocks but cuts them with slightly textured ends so they blend a little into the length behind. The fringe may be replaced by wispy or curtain bangs, or skipped entirely. It suits wavy and slightly frizzy hair far better and is much easier to wear to work or family functions.
There are also hybrid versions. A hime cut with a butterfly crown adds lift to the top, while a hime cut with long layers makes the back move more. Tell your stylist which elements you love and which you can do without; the cut is easy to customise.
Maintenance and growing out
Sidelocks and fringe need trimming every four to six weeks to keep their blunt lines. The long hair can go 10 to 12 weeks. To grow out, simply stop trimming the sidelocks; they will lengthen into face-framing layers. The fringe grows into curtain bangs in two to three months.
Because the cut is mostly long hair, growing it out is easy and never looks awkward.
Book the sidelock trims in advance so the lines never soften too far.
