Choosing a hospital bag for delivery
The best hospital bag for delivery is a 35 to 45 litre duffle or weekender with a wide opening, several internal pockets, a separate compartment for baby items and a shoulder strap your partner can carry easily. Pack it by around 34 to 36 weeks of pregnancy, or as your doctor advises, so it is ready whenever labour begins.
A duffle works better than a suitcase in most Indian hospitals. Rooms and wards are often compact, cupboards are small, and a soft bag fits under the bed or on a chair. It also goes in a car boot or an auto-rickshaw quickly.
Many families split packing into two bags: one for the mother and one for the baby, or one for labour and one for the post-delivery stay. A duffle plus a smaller tote is a practical combination.
This guide covers what to look for in the bag and a practical packing list, but always follow your hospital's own guidance and your doctor's advice.
A practical tip from many parents: once packed, photograph the inside of each pouch. If someone else has to fetch something, you can send the photo rather than trying to describe where an item is.

Size: how big should the bag be
For a typical stay of two to three days after a normal delivery, a 35 to 40 litre bag is enough for the mother's items plus some baby essentials. After a caesarean section, stays are often longer, so 45 litres or a second small bag helps.
Avoid huge holdalls. In a busy ward, a giant bag is hard to manage and harder to find things in at 3 a.m.
Some families prefer a cabin trolley for the mother and a smaller duffle for the baby. Choose whatever is easiest for your partner or family member to carry and manage.
Remember that hospitals often provide some items, such as gowns or newborn kits. Check with your hospital so you do not overpack.
If your hospital is far from home or traffic is unpredictable, as it often is in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi, keep the bag in the car during the last few weeks, or by the front door with documents on top. Quick departure matters more than perfect packing.
Features that really help in a maternity ward
A wide, U-shaped zip opening lets you see everything at a glance, which is invaluable when you are tired and someone else is fetching items for you.
Multiple internal pockets keep small things like documents, medicines, hair ties, lip balm and phone chargers easy to find. A separate end compartment for baby clothes and nappies is very useful.
A wipe-clean lining is practical, as spills and leaks happen. Nylon or coated fabric is easier to clean than canvas or leather.
A sturdy shoulder strap and trolley sleeve help your partner carry the bag along with other items through hospital corridors.
A bag with a flat base that stands up on its own is surprisingly useful. In a hospital room, it will often sit on a chair or the floor and needs to stay open without collapsing, so family members can reach in without emptying it onto the bed.
Avoid bags with complicated closures, such as multiple buckles and drawstrings. Simple zips that open in one pull are much easier when you are in a hurry or holding a newborn.
Packing list for the mother
Documents: hospital registration papers, ID, insurance documents, doctor's notes and any test reports, kept together in a zip folder.
Clothes: two or three loose, front-opening nightgowns or kurtas suitable for breastfeeding, a dressing gown or shawl, comfortable slippers, socks, a set of comfortable clothes to go home in, nursing bras and several pairs of comfortable maternity underwear.
Personal care: maternity pads, a toothbrush and toothpaste, face wash, moisturiser, lip balm, hair ties, a comb and any regular medicines with your doctor's approval.
Comfort items: a phone charger with a long cable, a small pillow if you like your own, earphones and a water bottle with a straw.
A soft, breathable cotton fabric is best for nightwear in Indian summers, while a light shawl or cardigan is useful in air-conditioned wards and during winter months. Choose dark or printed fabrics, which are more forgiving in the days after delivery.
A small hand towel, a pair of flip-flops for the shower and a few hair clips are often forgotten but appreciated. A pack of disposable underwear can also be convenient in the first days.
Packing list for the baby
Clothes: three to four soft cotton onesies or jhablas, a couple of caps, mittens and socks, and two swaddle cloths or soft wraps.
Nappies: newborn-size nappies or cloth nappies, baby wipes or soft cotton, and a gentle nappy cream if your paediatrician recommends one.
For going home: a weather-appropriate outfit, a warm blanket in winter, and a car seat if you are driving.
Keep baby items in a separate compartment or a labelled pouch, so they are easy to find quickly.
Pack baby clothes in a soft pouch after washing them in a mild detergent and drying them in the sun. Many families wash them in advance and keep them sealed in a clean cloth bag until the hospital stay.
In winter, add a soft woollen cap, a light baby blanket and a pair of warm socks for the newborn, as hospital rooms can be cooler than expected at night. In summer, light muslin wraps are more comfortable than thick swaddles.
Packing for the partner or family member
A change of clothes, toothbrush, phone charger, snacks, a refillable water bottle and some cash for parking or the canteen.
A small notebook or phone note for the doctor's instructions, feeding times and questions.
A light shawl or jacket, since hospital air-conditioning can be cold at night.
These can go in a small sling or tote so the main bag stays organised for the mother and baby.
If grandparents or other family members will take turns staying at the hospital, keep a simple shared kit for them: a spare phone charger, a shawl, a water bottle and a few snack packets. It saves trips home and keeps the main bag tidy.
If the partner will be staying overnight, a compact travel pillow and a thin blanket make the hospital's recliner or sofa far more bearable over two or three nights.
Organising the bag for quick access
Use clear or labelled pouches for categories: documents, mother's toiletries, maternity pads, baby clothes, nappies, chargers. This helps anyone find items quickly.
Put labour essentials, such as documents, lip balm, a hair tie, a phone charger and a water bottle, at the top or in the outer pocket.
Keep a printed list in the bag of what is inside and where, so family members can help without asking you.
Pack a laundry bag for worn clothes and a spare plastic bag for anything soiled.
Mark pouches by colour if labels are not practical. For example, blue for baby, pink for mother, green for documents. This simple system helps family members who may not know exactly what was packed.
Choosing a bag you will use again
A quality duffle chosen for the hospital becomes a versatile family bag afterwards. Many mothers later use it as a nappy bag for outings, a weekender for trips to grandparents or a gym bag.
Neutral colours like grey, navy, black or beige make the bag easy to reuse. Choose nylon or coated canvas for easy cleaning.
Look for a structured base, a padded strap and a trolley sleeve, which will be useful on future family trips.
Many established brands offer weekenders and duffles from about ₹5,000 that suit both the hospital stay and years of family travel afterwards.
Before the due date, practise unpacking and repacking once. It sounds unnecessary, but it ensures you and your partner both know where everything is and lets you remove anything that turns out to be unnecessary.
After the hospital stay, the same bag works well for the baby's first trips to visit relatives, and later for family weekends away. Choosing a quality, neutral bag at this stage pays off for years.
