The short answer
Most women need 8 to 15 t-shirts: about 5 to 7 everyday basics, 2 to 4 statement or graphic tees, and 2 to 4 for lounging or workouts. The right number depends on how often you do laundry, how often you wear tees and whether you live in a humid climate where tees need changing more often.
If you have more than 25 tees, you almost certainly have duplicates, stretched-out pieces and tees you never wear. If you have fewer than 6, you may be doing laundry too often or reaching for the same two tops every week.
This guide breaks down the ideal number by lifestyle, shows how to calculate your own and explains how to declutter without regret.
The aim is a tee collection that serves your real week, not an arbitrary minimalist rule.

Calculate your own number
Start with how many days a week you wear tees. If you wear them five days, and you do laundry once a week, you need at least five daily-wear tees, plus one or two extras for sweaty days or unexpected stains.
Add tees for workouts and sleep separately; these get dirty faster and should not mix with your outfit tees. Then add a few statement tees for weekends and events.
Climate matters. In humid cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, you may change tees twice a day in summer, so add a few more. In dry or cool climates, you can rewear a tee for a short outing.
The formula: (days per week in tees × weeks between laundry) + 2 buffer + workout/sleep tees + 2 to 4 statement tees.
For example, a college student who wears tees five days a week and does laundry every Sunday needs at least 5 everyday tees plus 2 buffer tees, 3 workout or sleep tees and 3 statement tees, which comes to 13. A working professional who wears tees only on weekends might need 4 everyday tees, 1 buffer, 3 workout or sleep tees and 2 statement tees, a total of 10.
By lifestyle
College students often wear tees almost daily and do laundry weekly, so 10 to 15 tees, including a few graphic and oversized ones, is reasonable. Corporate professionals who wear tees mostly on weekends might need only 6 to 10.
Work-from-home women may wear tees daily but rewear more often, so 8 to 12 is plenty. Gym-goers need an extra 3 to 5 workout tees. Frequent travellers benefit from quick-dry tees that can be washed on the go, reducing the total needed.
Mothers of young children often need more tees because of frequent spills, so a few extra affordable basics help.
Your number may change over time; review it each season.
Think about your hobbies too. If you trek, dance, paint or garden, you may need a few dedicated tees for those activities so your outfit tees stay in good condition.
Which tees deserve a place
Keep a strong base of basics: white, black, grey and navy in your preferred fit. Add a striped tee and a few colour tees that flatter your skin tone.
Keep one or two statement tees you love, such as band tees or graphic tees, that make you happy. Keep a fitted tee for layering under jackets and an oversized tee for relaxed days.
Keep tees that fit well, feel comfortable and work with at least three bottoms you own.
Let go of tees that need a specific bottom you do not own or that you have not worn in a year.
A useful test is the three-outfit rule: a tee earns its place if it works with at least three bottoms or layers you already own. Basics usually pass easily, while trendy prints often fail. If a statement tee fails but you love it, keep it, but limit how many such pieces you have.
How to declutter your tees
Take every tee out and sort into four piles: love and wear, wear but do not love, never wear and damaged. Keep the first pile. Review the second for anything that could be replaced by a better version.
Donate tees in good condition from the never-wear pile. Damaged tees can be cut into cleaning rags, used for DIY projects or given to textile recycling drives.
Be honest about sentimental tees, such as college fest tees and trip souvenirs. Keep a few with real meaning and photograph the rest before letting go.
Try the hanger trick: turn all hangers backwards and flip them once you wear the tee. After three months, any tee on a backward hanger is a candidate for decluttering.
Decluttering is easier with a friend. Invite someone whose taste you trust, try on tees together and get honest feedback. You can also swap tees with each other, giving them new homes instead of donating.
Storage tips for a tidy tee collection
File-folding, where tees are folded into rectangles and stood upright in drawers, lets you see every tee at once. This method stops you from forgetting the ones at the bottom of a stack.
Store workout and sleep tees separately from outfit tees. Use drawer dividers or small boxes to keep categories clear.
Hanging tees for long periods can stretch the shoulders, so fold most of them. Hang only structured or special tees.
Keep a small bag for tees that need repair, so they do not get lost.
Seasonal storage helps too. Store long-sleeve and heavier tees in a box during summer and rotate them back in winter. This keeps your active drawer manageable and makes it easy to see what you actually wear in each season.
Signs you have too many or too few
Too many: you cannot close your drawer, you keep finding tees with tags, you wear the same five regardless or you buy duplicates by accident. Too few: you do laundry more than you want to, you panic when one tee is dirty or you wear workout tees out.
Adjust gradually. Removing a few unused tees often reveals what you actually need.
Quality over quantity is the key. A few well-made tees that fit beautifully beat a drawer full of mediocre ones.
Also think about how your tees make you feel. If you avoid a tee because it feels tight, scratchy or unflattering, it is not really part of your wardrobe. A smaller collection of tees you love feels better than a large collection of tees you tolerate.
Smarter shopping for the future
Before buying a new tee, ask whether it fills a gap, works with three items you already own and is better quality than what it replaces. If not, skip it.
Wait 48 hours before buying impulse tees. Use a wishlist on your shopping app and revisit it later.
When you do buy, invest in better fabric for basics and spend less on trend tees. Good basics on Amazon India are available from about ₹399 to ₹999 each.
Building slowly saves money and leads to a collection you truly enjoy.
Consider buying basics in multipacks if you love a particular fit and fabric. Multipacks often reduce the cost per tee and ensure consistency. Test one tee first before ordering a multipack.
Track what you wear for a month. You will likely see that you rotate the same 8 to 10 tees, which is a good guide to your real number.
A sample collection for a typical Indian woman
Here is an example for a working woman in a metro who wears tees on weekends and some weekdays: 2 white tees, 1 black tee, 1 grey tee, 1 navy tee, 1 striped tee, 2 colour tees, 2 graphic tees, 1 fitted layering tee, 1 oversized tee and 3 workout or sleep tees. That is 15 tees in total.
A college student might add 2 more graphic or oversized tees and a few crop tees. A minimalist might cut to 8 with fewer graphic tees.
Use this as a starting point and adjust to your life.
