How to blow dry hair at home: the short version
To blow dry hair at home like a salon, rough-dry damp hair to about 70 percent with your fingers, then section it with clips and dry each 3 to 5 cm section over a round or paddle brush with the dryer nozzle pointing down the hair shaft. Finish every section with a blast of cool air to lock in smoothness and bounce.
A good blowout is the base for so many looks, from sleek office hair to voluminous party waves, and it can reduce how often you reach for a straightener. With practice, it takes 20 to 30 minutes for medium-length hair. Here is the full method, step by step.
You do not need salon equipment, just the right tools, a little patience and a method you repeat until your hands remember it. The first few attempts will feel awkward; by the fourth or fifth, you will be noticeably faster.

What you need
A dryer with at least two heat and two speed settings, a cool shot button and a concentrator nozzle. The nozzle is essential: it focuses airflow so hair dries smooth instead of being blown in all directions.
A round brush sized for your hair: medium 4 to 5 cm for shoulder-length hair, large 5 to 6.5 cm for long hair and big bounce. A paddle brush for a fast, sleek finish. Four to six sectioning clips or claw clips. A heat protectant, plus a volumising mousse for fine hair or a smoothing cream for thick, frizzy hair.
A microfibre towel for gentle drying, and a light serum for finishing. That is all a salon blowout really needs.
Step 1: prep damp hair
Wash and condition. Squeeze out water and blot with a microfibre towel or cotton t-shirt; do not rub, which roughs up the cuticle and causes frizz. Detangle with a wide-toothed comb from the ends upward.
Apply heat protectant evenly through the lengths. For volume, add a golf-ball-sized amount of mousse at the roots. For smoothness, apply a little smoothing cream to the mid-lengths and ends. Comb through to distribute.
Indian hair is often thick, and if it is soaking, the blowout takes forever. Let it air dry for 10 to 15 minutes first if you have time.
If you have an oily scalp, keep conditioner and creams away from the roots; apply them only from the ears down. Heavy product at the roots makes a blowout collapse by the afternoon.
Step 2: rough dry first
Using medium heat and high speed without the nozzle, dry hair with your fingers, lifting at the roots and moving the dryer constantly. Flip your head upside down for extra root volume. Stop at about 70 to 80 percent dry.
Rough drying removes most of the water quickly, so you spend less time with the brush and less heat on each section. Do not skip it, especially with thick hair.
Now attach the concentrator nozzle for the styling phase.
If you are short on time, rough dry only the back and underneath layers, then save your brush work for the top and front, which are the parts people actually see.
Step 3: section and brush dry
Divide hair into sections: clip the top half up and start at the nape. Take a section about the width of your brush. Place the round brush under the section at the root, aim the nozzle down along the hair from root to tip, and slowly pull the brush down while following it with the dryer. Keep the nozzle a few centimetres from the hair and never hold it still on one spot.
Repeat on the same section two or three times until it is completely dry. At the ends, rotate the brush to create a soft bend. Before releasing, hit the cool shot for a few seconds to set it, then let the section drop.
Work up the head, releasing sections from the clips as you go. For the crown, over-direct, pull hair up and forward, for lift.
Arm position matters more than people expect. Hold the brush in your non-dominant hand and the dryer in your dominant hand for the sections that need the most control, usually the front. Rest your elbow on the dressing table if your arm gets tired.
For the front sections, dry them first while they are still damp, because the hairline dries quickest and is hardest to smooth once it air-dries with kinks.
Paddle brush vs round brush blowouts
Paddle brush: faster, gives sleek, straight hair with less volume. Great for daily use, fine hair that falls flat with round brushes, or people new to blow-drying.
Round brush: creates volume, bounce and bent ends. Bigger barrels give smoother, bouncier results; smaller ones give more curl. It takes more practice to coordinate brush and dryer.
A hybrid works well too: rough dry, paddle brush most of the hair, then round brush only the top layer and face-framing pieces for bounce.
If you want polished bounce without a round brush, try velcro rollers: blow-dry with a paddle brush, then roll the top sections into large velcro rollers while still warm. Let them cool for 10 minutes and release for a salon-style finish.
Adjusting for hair type
Fine hair: use mousse at the roots, lower heat and a smaller round brush. Over-direct at the crown. Thick hair: more and smaller sections, a slightly higher heat setting and a large round brush. Wavy hair: use smoothing cream and keep tension on each section as you dry.
Curly hair: a full blowout needs patience. Stretch curls with a paddle brush in small sections. If you want to keep curls, use a diffuser on low speed and scrunch instead. Layered hair: blow each layer separately and curve the ends outward or inward.
Short hair and bobs: use a small round brush to curve ends under for a polished bob.
For a fringe, dry it first, brushing side to side over a small round brush to remove cowlicks before smoothing it down.
Making your blowout last
Finish with a pea-sized drop of serum on the ends. Avoid heavy oils at the roots. In humid weather, use a light anti-frizz spray.
At night, twist hair into a loose top bun and secure it with a claw clip or satin scrunchie, which keeps volume and smoothness. Sleep on a satin pillowcase. In the morning, release and shake out.
Use dry shampoo on day two or three to absorb oil at the roots. Avoid sweating heavily or getting caught in rain without a scarf or umbrella. A good blowout can last two to four days.
In humid cities such as Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, a blowout lasts longest if you keep your hair up during the commute. A loose claw clip twist protects the shape until you arrive, then you shake it out.
Blowout mistakes to avoid
Starting on soaking wet hair, which takes too long and causes more heat exposure. Skipping the nozzle, which causes frizz. Pointing the dryer up the hair shaft, which lifts the cuticle. Using maximum heat; medium is enough with good technique.
Taking huge sections, which leave the inside damp and frizzy. Holding the dryer in one spot. Skipping the cool shot. Brushing hair before it cools, which loosens the shape.
Correct these, and your at-home blowouts will start to look professional within a few weeks.
Clean your dryer filter regularly too. A clogged filter reduces airflow and makes the dryer run hotter, which can damage hair and the tool itself.
