How to Care for Graphic T-Shirts So Prints Don't Crack

Protect the print in four moves

To care for graphic t-shirts, turn them inside out, wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, skip the tumble dryer and never iron directly on the print. Heat and friction are what make prints crack, peel and fade, so these four habits add years to a favourite band tee, anime print or slogan tee.

Graphic tees are at the heart of 2026 Gen Z wardrobes, from oversized vintage-wash prints to minimal typography. Because the print is often the reason you bought the tee, it deserves a little extra care.

Print care is also about the fabric underneath. A print on a quality cotton tee lasts longer than the same print on a thin, stretchy blend, because stable fabric does not pull the ink apart with every movement.

Know your print type

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh stencil onto fabric. Plastisol screen prints sit on top and feel slightly raised and rubbery; water-based screen prints soak into the fabric and feel soft. Plastisol is durable but can crack with heat and stretching.

DTG, or direct-to-garment, works like an inkjet printer for fabric, creating detailed, soft prints. They can fade faster with harsh washing.

Drying without damage

Avoid the tumble dryer entirely. High heat is the number one cause of cracked prints.

Dry flat or folded over a line at the waist. Hanging heavy wet tees by the shoulders stretches the fabric, and stretching is what cracks prints.

In the monsoon, dry indoors with a fan rather than on a heater or iron-dry method.

If your graphic tee has a large print, avoid draping it over a line through the middle of the print. Fold the line at the waist instead so the print hangs straight.

Never dry a graphic tee on a hot terrace railing or metal surface, which can heat the print directly and cause it to soften, stick or crack.

Ironing and storing

Iron graphic tees inside out on low to medium heat, avoiding the print area. If needed, place baking paper or a cotton cloth over the print before pressing.

Never iron directly on vinyl, foil or glitter. A steamer is a safer way to release wrinkles.

Fold graphic tees with the fold line away from the print, or roll them. Avoid storing them in hot places like car boots or near windows.

Do not stack heavy items on printed tees for long periods; pressure can make prints stick to each other in hot weather.

Fix peeling t-shirt print

For a vinyl or heat-transfer print that has started lifting at the edges, place baking paper over the print and press with a dry iron on medium heat for 10 to 15 seconds, applying firm pressure. Let it cool fully before checking.

For small cracks in plastisol prints, there is no perfect fix, but pressing with baking paper can soften and flatten them slightly. Some people embrace the cracked vintage look.

For badly peeling prints, fabric glue or fabric paint can touch up edges, or you can cover a damaged area with an iron-on patch for a DIY, upcycled feel.

Prevention is easier than repair, so keep heat and stretching to a minimum.
