The short answer: fit first, then build, then style
To choose a cabin trolley, start with the size your usual airline allows (typically around 55 x 35 x 20-25 cm and 7 kg on Indian domestic carriers), then pick a shell that weighs under about 2.5 kg, four double spinner wheels, a sturdy telescopic handle and a warranty of several years. Only after those boxes are ticked should colour and brand enter the conversation.
That order matters because a beautiful trolley that is two centimetres too deep, or that eats three of your seven kilos before you pack a single kurta, will frustrate you at every gate. A cabin bag is the piece of luggage you handle most closely: you lift it into overhead bins, wheel it through Terminal 2 in Mumbai, haul it up hotel steps in Udaipur and wedge it beside your feet on the airport shuttle. Small flaws are magnified because you live with it at arm's length.
This guide walks through each decision in the order a seasoned travel stylist would make it, so you can compare brands like Samsonite, American Tourister, Mokobara, Nasher Miles, Delsey and Tumi on substance rather than on a glossy product photo.

Step one: get the dimensions right
Airlines publish cabin limits as length, width and depth including wheels and handles. Indian domestic carriers have typically allowed bags of roughly 55 x 35 x 25 cm, while many international airlines quote figures close to 56 x 36 x 23 cm or a combined linear total of 115 cm. Rules change and vary by fare type, so always confirm on your airline's website before you buy and again before you fly.
When you read a product listing, look for the external dimensions, not the packing-space dimensions. Some listings describe a 55 cm trolley where the body is 55 cm but the wheels add another two to three centimetres. Ask yourself whether the brand lists the size inclusive of wheels; reputable makers usually do. Depth is the measurement most often exceeded once an expandable zip is opened, so treat the unexpanded depth as the number that matters for cabin use.
Capacity in litres follows from these numbers. A true 55 cm hard shell usually holds somewhere between 32 and 42 litres depending on depth and wall thickness. Soft trolleys with external pockets can claim more because the pockets bulge. More litres is not automatically better: you still have a weight allowance to respect, and a bag stuffed to bursting is harder to lift overhead.
Step two: choose the shell or fabric
Polycarbonate is the default for premium hard-shell cabin trolleys because it flexes under impact and springs back instead of cracking. It is lighter than aluminium and more resilient than cheaper ABS, which can crack in cold cargo holds though a cabin bag escapes most of that abuse. Pure polycarbonate scuffs, so a textured or matte finish hides the marks of overhead bins far better than a high-gloss shell.
Aluminium trolleys look stunning and resist crushing, but they dent, they weigh more and they cost considerably more. They suit travellers who value a heirloom feel and do not mind patina. Soft-sided trolleys in ballistic or high-denier nylon or polyester are lighter, forgiving when you need to squeeze them into a tight bin and come with outer pockets for a passport, a shawl or a novel.
A practical rule: if you fly mostly with carriers whose bins are generous and you value organisation, a soft trolley with a front pocket is wonderful. If you want protection for a wedding outfit or souvenirs from Jaipur's markets, a hard shell earns its keep.
Step three: wheels and handle are where premium shows
Four double spinner wheels, eight small wheels in total, let you glide a bag beside you down long terminals without the strain on your wrist that a tilted two-wheeler causes. Look for wheels that are recessed slightly into the shell so they are protected, and that are replaceable; several premium brands sell spare wheel modules, which extends the life of the bag by years.
Silent wheels are not a gimmick on marble hotel floors or at a quiet early-morning departure. Test, if you can, by rolling the bag over tiles: a good trolley tracks straight without wobbling. The telescopic handle should lock at two or three heights, have minimal play when extended and feel comfortable in your palm. Petite travellers should check the lowest locked height so the bag does not tip forward.
Grab handles on the top and side matter more than people think. You will lift the bag into overhead bins by the side handle and out of an auto-rickshaw boot by the top one, so both should be padded and firmly riveted.
Step four: interior, locks and small luxuries
Inside, a 50:50 clamshell gives two equal packing halves with compression straps on one side and a zipped divider on the other. Some cabin bags use a 60:40 or front-opening design that lets you reach essentials without laying the bag flat, which is useful in cramped train compartments. Removable laundry pouches and a waterproof wet pocket for swimwear after a Goa weekend are thoughtful touches.
Most premium trolleys carry a TSA-accepted combination lock. This matters mainly on routes involving the United States, where security can open TSA-accepted locks without damaging them. For India it simply gives you a fixed lock so you do not need a padlock dangling off the zip. Zip quality is a quiet indicator of overall build; chunky, smooth-running zippers from reputable makers are less likely to fail mid-trip.
USB ports, front laptop compartments and built-in scales are optional extras. They are useful for some travellers, but each adds weight and sometimes cost, so choose the extras you will actually use.
Step five: weigh the empty bag
Domestic economy cabin allowances in India have typically been 7 kg, and many international economy fares sit in the 7 to 8 kg range. If your trolley weighs 3.2 kg empty, you have under four kilos for clothes, toiletries and gadgets. A shell that weighs 2.2 kg gives you a meaningful extra kilo, which is the difference between packing a second pair of heels or not.
Listings usually state weight; compare it at the same size. A front laptop pocket, an aluminium frame or a double zip expansion will each push the figure up. If you travel with a heavy laptop and a camera, prioritise a light shell and carry electronics in a structured tote or sling as your personal item.
A luggage scale is the smartest small accessory you can buy alongside your trolley. Weigh the bag empty when it arrives, note the figure, then weigh it packed before every trip. Over a few journeys you will learn exactly how much your usual wardrobe weighs and stop guessing at the counter.
Step six: warranty and what the premium buys
At the luxury end, from roughly ₹5,000 upwards and well beyond ₹20,000 for top names, you are paying for better wheel bearings, stronger handle systems, consistent zips, tested shells and a service network. Many established brands offer multi-year or even extended international warranties, but the terms differ widely, so read what is covered: manufacturing defects are usually included, airline damage often is not.
Ask yourself how often you fly. If it is four or five trips a year, a well-made mid-premium trolley will last many seasons. If you are on a plane every fortnight between Delhi and Bengaluru, it is worth investing in a trolley from a brand with service centres in Indian metros so a broken wheel becomes a quick fix rather than a reason to replace the bag.
A quick checklist before you click buy
Run through this list: external size including wheels within your airline's limit; empty weight under about 2.5 kg for hard shells; four double spinner wheels, ideally replaceable; a handle that locks firmly at a height comfortable for you; a TSA-accepted lock if you visit the United States; a matte or textured finish if you hate scratches; and a warranty you have actually read.
Then think about the rest of your travel set. A cabin trolley pairs naturally with a structured tote or a crossbody sling that slides over the trolley handle via a sleeve, keeping your passport and phone close. Choose a colour you will recognise instantly in a crowded bin, whether that is a deep emerald, a soft blush or a classic black with a bright tag. Finally, buy a little early; a new bag deserves a short test run around the house before a long-haul trip.
