How to distress jeans at home: the basics
To distress jeans at home, put them on and mark where you want rips or fades with chalk, then lay them flat with a piece of cardboard inside the leg. Use sandpaper or a pumice stone to thin and fade the area, make small horizontal cuts with a craft knife or scissors, and pull out the vertical blue threads with tweezers to leave the white horizontal threads. Wash and dry to soften the result.
DIY distressing lets you control exactly how much damage you want, saves money and gives a second life to plain or slightly worn jeans. The key is restraint: start small, wash, then add more if needed.
Choose the right pair. Mid and dark blue cotton jeans distress best, because the contrast between the blue surface and the white core shows clearly. Very light washes give a subtle effect, and black jeans distress into grey. Old jeans you no longer wear are perfect for a first try.

Tools you need
Collect a piece of cardboard or a wooden chopping board, tailor's chalk, a medium-grit sandpaper, a pumice stone or a cheese grater, sharp scissors or a craft knife, tweezers and a seam ripper. A metal ruler helps for straight cuts.
Work on a table in good light and keep the cardboard inside the leg at all times so you do not cut through the back of the jeans by accident. Keep sharp tools away from children.
If you do not have tweezers, a large needle or a safety pin works to tease out threads. A seam ripper is also useful for opening small slits neatly. Keep a lint roller nearby; distressing creates a lot of blue fluff that clings to clothes and furniture.
Step 1: plan placement
Put on the jeans and stand in front of a mirror. Mark where your knees naturally sit, and where the jeans would wear naturally: front thighs, knees, pocket edges and hems. Mark small horizontal lines for rips about one hand's width above and below the knee centre.
Natural wear looks uneven, so do not make both legs identical. Keep rips higher than mid-thigh minimal to avoid an overly revealing look, especially if you plan to wear them to college or casual family outings.
For college and casual weekend looks, subtle knee and thigh distressing is the most versatile. For festivals, concerts and travel, you can go bolder. If you plan to wear the jeans around older family members, keep distressing to the knees and hems for a balanced look.
Take a photo of the marked jeans while you are wearing them. Looking at the photo helps you judge placement more objectively than the mirror, and you can adjust marks before cutting. It also gives you a reference if you want to recreate the look on another pair later.
Step 2: sand and fade
Rub the marked areas with sandpaper or a pumice stone in short, firm strokes. This thins the fabric and lightens the indigo, creating a worn base. Sand pocket edges, the waistband edge, belt loops and the hem edges lightly for a lived-in look.
For subtle vintage whiskers at the hip, crease the fabric where it folds when you sit and rub sandpaper lightly along the top of each crease. Short, light passes look more natural than heavy scrubbing.
A cheese grater gives quicker, rougher results than sandpaper. Use short strokes over the edges of pockets and on the thighs for a frayed, worn texture. Do not press too hard, because it can tear through quickly, especially on thin or stretch denim.
Step 3: make the rips
With the cardboard inside, make two or three parallel horizontal cuts about one centimetre apart and about four to eight centimetres long across your marked area. For a small distressed patch, use shorter cuts.
Now use tweezers to pull out the blue vertical threads between the cuts. The white horizontal weft threads will remain, creating the classic white-thread knee look. If you want an open hole, cut through those white threads too, but remember a hole grows with washing.
For a more natural look, vary the length of the cuts slightly and space them unevenly. Real wear is never perfectly symmetrical. Leave some areas with only white threads and others with small open gaps to mimic the way jeans wear over many years.
For a destroyed boyfriend look, extend the cuts across more of the knee and allow some white threads to break. For a cleaner look, keep cuts short and few. A single rip on one knee and light fading on the other thigh is a stylish, understated approach.
Step 4: fray the hem
For a frayed hem, cut off the original hem or pick the stitching out with a seam ripper. Use tweezers or a pin to pull out a few horizontal threads along the edge. Wash and dry, and the fray softens and grows.
To keep it from fraying further, sew a line of stitching about one to two centimetres above the edge. An uneven chewed hem, with one side slightly longer at the back, is a current 2026 look on straight and wide-leg jeans.
Hems can also be distressed without cutting the length. Use sandpaper or a pumice stone on the folded edge of the original hem until the threads break and fray. This gives a worn, vintage hem while keeping the jeans at their current length.
Step 5: wash and refine
Wash the jeans inside out on a normal cold cycle and dry them. This is when the distressing looks real: fraying blooms, sanded areas soften and threads loosen. Inspect and trim long threads, or add more distressing where it looks thin.
If a rip opened more than you wanted, you can stabilise it from inside with a fusible patch or a few stitches around the edges.
If you prefer not to use bleach, try a gentler fade with a paste of baking soda and water rubbed into specific areas, left for an hour and rinsed. The effect is much subtler than bleach and suits a softly faded vintage look on the thighs and seat.
Bleach effects: proceed carefully
For a lighter, faded or splattered look, some people use diluted bleach in a spray bottle or dabbed with a sponge. Work outdoors, wear gloves and old clothes, keep the room ventilated, and neutralise by rinsing thoroughly with cold water and washing afterwards. Never mix bleach with vinegar or other cleaners, which can release harmful fumes.
Test on an inside hem first, because different denims react differently. Start very diluted; you cannot reverse bleach.
Once you are confident, try mixing techniques: a sanded vintage base, a light bleach splatter and one knee rip. Combining effects lightly looks more realistic than one heavy treatment. Always check the jeans after each step to avoid going too far.
Care for distressed jeans
Wash distressed jeans inside out in a mesh bag on a gentle cold cycle so rips do not snag. Air dry. Avoid frequent washing, which opens holes faster. Trim loose threads after each wash.
Distressed jeans are best for casual settings. For a balanced outfit, pair them with something polished, like a crisp shirt, a blazer or loafers, so the look reads intentional rather than worn out.
Distressed jeans also need extra care when you put them on. Pointed toes of shoes, rings and long nails can catch the white threads and turn a neat rip into a big hole. Slide your feet through carefully and remove rings before pulling jeans on.
