How to dry jeans in monsoon: the fast method
To dry jeans in monsoon, run an extra spin cycle to remove as much water as possible, roll them in a dry towel and press, then hang them inside out and upside down from the hem with the legs separated under a fan near an open window. Turn them every few hours, and finish thick seams and pockets with a hair dryer or iron if needed. Jeans should be completely dry within a day this way, even in high humidity.
The rainy season in Mumbai, Kerala, Goa, Kolkata or the north-east can make denim take two or three days to dry, which leads to the dreaded damp, sour smell. The method above, along with a few washing tweaks, keeps jeans fresh.
Monsoon drying is mainly about airflow, not heat. Humid air is already full of moisture, so jeans dry slowly unless air is moving across them. That is why a fan and an open window, or a cross breeze between two windows, helps more than leaving jeans in a closed room.

Before you wash: reduce the load
The easiest monsoon tip is to wash jeans less. Air them out after each wear and spot clean marks. When you do wash, do it on mornings when there is a forecast break in the rain or when the power is reliable for fans.
Choose lighter denim for monsoon wear. Lightweight jeans and cotton-lyocell blends dry far faster than heavy rigid denim, and cropped or ankle-length styles stay out of puddle splash.
If you wear jeans to office during the rains, keep one pair that you wear only indoors, changing into it at work if your commute is wet. This keeps that pair dry and fresh for longer and reduces how often you need to wash and dry jeans during the wettest weeks.
Some people also keep a dedicated monsoon pair that they do not mind getting wet: a light wash, lightweight, ankle-length jean in a cotton blend that dries quickly. Reserving your darker, heavier jeans for drier weeks keeps them looking their best.
Step 1: wash smart
Wash in cold water, inside out, with a measured dose of detergent. Too much detergent leaves residue that holds moisture and smells. Add half a cup of white vinegar to the final rinse; it neutralises odour-causing bacteria and helps rinse out detergent completely.
Avoid fabric softener during monsoon, as it coats fibres and slows drying.
It also helps to wash jeans early in the day so they have the most hours of airflow before evening. Clothes washed at night and left on a rack until morning in a closed room often smell sour, especially thick denim, because humidity rises overnight.
Wash jeans in a smaller load during monsoon. A lightly loaded drum rinses better and spins more water out, so the jeans come out less soggy. It also reduces creasing, which means less ironing on days when humidity already makes everything feel slow to dry.
Step 2: extra spin and towel roll
Run an extra spin cycle at a medium to high spin for jeans, which do not mind it once washed. The more water spun out, the faster they dry. If you hand wash, press out water without wringing.
Lay a large dry towel on the bed, place the jeans flat on top, roll the towel tightly with the jeans inside and kneel or press on the roll. The towel absorbs a lot of water. Unroll and hang immediately.
Front-loading washing machines usually spin faster than top loaders, so jeans come out drier. If you have a top loader, the extra spin step and towel roll are even more important. In semi-automatic machines, use the spin tub for a longer cycle.
Step 3: hang for airflow
Hang jeans upside down by the hem using clip hangers, so the waistband, which is thickest, is at the bottom where water drips off and air reaches inside. Keep them inside out, because pockets and seams dry faster when exposed. Keep the legs apart with a second hanger or by clipping each leg separately.
Place the hanger under a ceiling fan near an open window, or in front of a pedestal fan. A cross breeze is ideal. Leave space between clothes on the rack so air can flow.
If you live in a small flat, a foldable clothes drying stand placed in front of a pedestal fan works very well. Point the fan directly at the jeans and switch the stand position every few hours so each side gets direct airflow.
Step 4: finish thick areas with heat
Waistbands, pocket bags, seams and hems often stay damp after the rest dries. Use a hair dryer on medium heat inside the waistband and pockets for a few minutes, or press the seams with an iron on the cotton setting through a thin cloth, which also dries them.
Do not iron the whole pair while wet, as it can leave a shine on dark denim, and do not use a heater or room radiator directly on stretch jeans, which damages elastane.
A quick tumble on low heat is also useful for refreshing jeans that have been sitting on a rack slightly damp for too long. Ten minutes in a warm dryer can remove lingering moisture and smell. Always remove jeans promptly and hang them to cool.
Using a dehumidifier or dryer
If you have a dehumidifier, running it in a closed room with your drying rack speeds things up a lot. If you have a tumble dryer, use the lowest heat for a short time to remove the bulk of moisture, then hang the jeans to finish; this protects colour and stretch.
Many washing machines also have a quick air dry or refresh function that helps after an extra spin.
Avoid drying jeans in the bathroom, which is usually the most humid room in the house. Even with an exhaust fan, the air is moist and jeans dry slowly there. A bedroom with a fan and a slightly open window is far better.
Fixing the musty smell
If jeans already smell sour or musty, soak them for an hour in cold water with a cup of white vinegar or a few spoons of baking soda, then wash and dry fast using the steps above. A sunny break, even an hour, does wonders; dry them inside out to avoid fading.
Make sure the wardrobe is not the problem. Place silica gel or a moisture absorber inside, and never store jeans that are even slightly damp. Neem leaves or cloves in the cupboard also help keep it fresh.
Choose rain-friendly outfits too. Rolled straight jeans with waterproof sandals or rubber-soled sneakers keep hems dry. Denim shorts and skorts are a good option on days you expect heavy rain, and they dry in a fraction of the time that full-length jeans do.
Keep an eye on hems. Long jeans touching the ground absorb water and carry mud. Rolling them up a couple of times while commuting and unrolling them at your destination keeps them cleaner, so you can wear them more often between washes during the rainy months.
Monsoon denim habits
Carry a spare pair at the office during the heaviest weeks, wear cropped or rolled jeans on rainy commute days, and switch to faster-drying fabrics like denim-look trousers or shorts on very wet days. Avoid white jeans and long wide-leg jeans in heavy rain, since muddy hems are hard to clean.
Keep a hand towel in your bag to pat dry wet patches as soon as you arrive. Damp denim worn all day is uncomfortable and smells by evening.
