How to embroider a t-shirt: the essentials
To embroider a t-shirt, iron a stretch-friendly stabiliser to the inside of the tee behind your design, transfer the motif with a water-soluble pen, place the area in an embroidery hoop without stretching the fabric, and stitch with two or three strands of cotton embroidery floss using simple stitches like backstitch, satin stitch and French knots. Remove the excess stabiliser and wash gently.
The stabiliser is the secret most beginners miss. T-shirt jersey stretches, and without support, your stitches will pucker and distort. With it, even a first-time embroiderer can get neat results.
Embroidered tees are a big 2026 trend: small florals on the chest, initials on the sleeve, tiny hearts on the collar and minimalist line art. They make thoughtful handmade gifts too.
This guide walks through supplies, preparation, five beginner stitches, design ideas and aftercare.

Supplies you will need
A medium-weight cotton tee is easiest to embroider; very thin tees pucker more. You will need an embroidery hoop (10 to 15 cm is ideal for chest designs), embroidery needles, cotton embroidery floss, small sharp scissors and a water-soluble or heat-erasable fabric pen.
Stabiliser is essential. Iron-on or sticky tear-away stabilisers work well for beginners. Cut-away stabilisers give long-term support for larger designs, while wash-away stabilisers dissolve completely. Many craft stores and online shops in India sell stabiliser sheets.
Choose thread colours that contrast with or complement your tee. White, black, sage, dusty pink and mustard are popular choices.
Optional: a lightbox or window for tracing designs, and printable transfer sheets.
A note on needles: embroidery needles with a slightly larger eye make threading multiple strands easier, while a ballpoint-tip needle slips between knit loops instead of piercing them, which reduces the chance of small holes or ladders in thin jersey. If you have both, use the ballpoint needle for tees.
Preparing the tee
Wash and dry the tee first to pre-shrink it. Iron it flat. Decide where your design will go: left chest, centre front, sleeve, back neck or hem.
Cut stabiliser slightly larger than your design and attach it to the inside of the tee behind the design area. Iron-on stabilisers need a medium iron; sticky ones press on.
Transfer your design onto the front of the tee using a fabric pen. You can trace it against a window or draw freehand. Printable stick-and-stitch sheets are another easy option.
Place the tee in the hoop, with the design centred. Tighten gently; the fabric should be taut but not stretched.
Placement is worth planning carefully. For a left chest design, the centre of the motif usually sits about 18 to 20 cm down from the shoulder seam and 8 to 10 cm in from the centre front, depending on your size. Try the tee on and mark the spot with a pin before you hoop, because a design that looks right on a flat tee can sit too low once worn.
Five beginner stitches
Backstitch creates neat outlines, perfect for text and line art. Bring the needle up, take a small stitch backward, then come up one stitch length ahead and repeat.
Satin stitch fills shapes with smooth, parallel stitches, ideal for petals and hearts. Keep stitches close and even. Stem stitch creates a rope-like line, great for flower stems.
French knots create small dots, like flower centres or eyes. Wrap the thread around the needle twice and insert it close to where you came up. Lazy daisy creates petals in loops.
Practise each stitch on a scrap of fabric before working on the tee.
Thread length matters too. Cut pieces about 45 cm long, roughly the distance from your fingertips to your elbow. Longer threads tangle and fray as they pass through the fabric repeatedly, which makes stitches look fuzzy.
Design ideas that suit tees
Tiny florals on the left chest look delicate and chic. A small initial or monogram on the sleeve or hem is a lovely personal touch. Minimalist line art, like a face profile or a coffee cup, looks modern.
For Indian-inspired designs, try small paisleys, mango motifs or lotus outlines in gold or maroon thread. These pair beautifully with ethnic skirts and palazzos.
Hearts, stars and smiley faces are fun for Gen Z. Text quotes in backstitch, like a favourite word in Hindi or your mother tongue, make meaningful gifts.
Keep designs small for your first project, about 5 to 8 cm across.
Colour pairing can make a simple design look expensive. Tone-on-tone embroidery, such as white thread on a cream tee or navy on a denim-blue tee, looks subtle and luxurious. Contrast threads, like red on white or yellow on black, feel playful and graphic. Metallic gold thread is lovely for festive motifs but trickier to handle, so use it for small accents only.
Stitching tips for neat results
Use two or three strands of floss for most designs; six strands is too thick for jersey. Keep stitches short, about 3 to 5 mm, to prevent snagging during wear.
Do not pull the thread too tight, which causes puckering. Do not carry thread across large gaps on the back; tie off and restart instead, so loose threads do not catch.
Secure thread ends by weaving them under stitches on the back rather than relying only on knots.
Take breaks and check the front regularly.
Work in good light, ideally daylight near a window, and keep a small magnifier handy for fine details. Embroidery is relaxing, but long sessions can strain your eyes and wrists, so take a short break every half hour.
Finishing and aftercare
Remove the hoop and trim excess stabiliser around the design, leaving a small border. If using wash-away stabiliser, rinse it out in water.
Remove pen marks with water or heat as directed. Press the tee from the back with a towel underneath to avoid flattening stitches.
Wash embroidered tees inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle, or hand wash. Dry flat or in shade. Avoid wringing.
Iron from the inside with a towel underneath to protect the embroidery.
Styling embroidered tees
A floral embroidered white tee with straight jeans and ballet flats looks soft and pretty. An initial tee with a denim skirt and sneakers is perfect for college. A paisley embroidered tee with palazzos and jhumkas works for casual festive days.
Keep accessories minimal so the embroidery stands out.
Embroidered tees also make lovely matching gifts for best friends or couples with each other's initials.
Layer with a cardigan or open shirt for cooler days.
To refresh an embroidered tee after many wears, steam it gently from the inside rather than pressing hard on the stitches. If a thread comes loose, secure it straight away with a few small stitches on the back before it unravels further.
Common mistakes
Skipping the stabiliser leads to puckered, distorted designs. Stretching the fabric in the hoop causes the design to warp once removed.
Using too many strands or long stitches can make the design bulky and prone to snagging.
Choosing a very thin tee for your first project makes it harder; start with medium-weight cotton.
Patience is key. Small, neat designs are more impressive than large, rushed ones.
Another common mistake is choosing a design with too many tiny details for a first project. Fine lettering and small faces need practice. Start with bold shapes like hearts, leaves and simple flowers, then progress to detailed line art.
