How Do You Find Your Face Shape?
To find your face shape for hairstyles, pull all your hair back, then compare four measurements: forehead width, cheekbone width, jaw width and face length from hairline to chin. Which one is widest, and whether the face is longer than wide, tells you if you are oval, round, square, heart, long or diamond. The mirror trace, the tape measure and the photo method all take under ten minutes.
Knowing your face shape is not about fixing flaws. It is a shortcut: once you know where your face is widest and narrowest, you understand why some haircuts instantly look right on you and others never do. It also makes salon conversations much easier, because you can explain what you want to balance.

Before You Start: Set Up Correctly
Pull every strand of hair off your face with a headband or a tight ponytail, including the fringe. Stand in front of a mirror in even, natural light, with your face straight and your chin parallel to the floor. Tilting the chin up or down changes how long the face looks and is the most common reason people misjudge their shape.
Remove glasses and heavy earrings, and keep a neutral expression. Smiling widens the cheeks. If you have very full hair at the hairline, wet it slightly and smooth it back so you can see where the hairline actually starts.
If you are measuring yourself, use a mirror at eye level rather than a bathroom mirror that forces you to look up or down. It also helps to do the test twice, on different days, since bloating and lighting can affect your perception.
Test One: The Mirror Trace
Take a washable kohl pencil, lipstick or a dry-erase marker. Standing about an arm's length from the mirror and closing one eye to avoid double vision, trace the outline of your face on the glass, starting at the hairline, down past the cheekbones, along the jaw and to the chin, then back up the other side.
Step back and look at the shape. Is it like an egg, a circle, a square, an inverted triangle, a long rectangle or a diamond? Look especially at the jaw: is it rounded, angular or pointed? And at the forehead: is it the widest part or narrower than the cheekbones? This test is quick but less precise, so confirm with the tape measure.
Test Two: The Tape Measure Method
Use a soft tailor's tape. Measure forehead width across the widest part, usually halfway between your eyebrows and hairline. Measure cheekbone width from the outer point of one cheekbone to the other, just below the outer corners of the eyes. Measure jaw width from the point below each ear where the jaw angles, times two, or straight across with the tape held under the chin.
Finally, measure face length from the centre of the hairline down to the tip of the chin. Write all four numbers down. You now have the data to compare, which removes the guesswork of the mirror.
Reading Your Measurements
Oval: face length is about one and a half times the width, forehead slightly wider than the jaw, jaw gently rounded. Round: length and cheekbone width are almost equal, with a soft, rounded jaw. Square: forehead, cheekbones and jaw are similar in width, and the jaw is angular. Long or oblong: length is clearly greater than width, with forehead, cheeks and jaw similar.
Heart: forehead is the widest, tapering to a narrow, often pointed chin. Diamond: cheekbones are the widest, with both forehead and jaw narrower and the chin pointed. Many people fall between two shapes, such as round-square or oval-heart. In that case, use the advice for both and choose the overlap.
A seventh shape, the triangle or pear, is sometimes added: the jaw is the widest part and the forehead is narrower. If this sounds like you, look for styles that add width at the forehead and crown, such as side-swept bangs and crown volume, and keep the jaw area soft and smooth.
Test Three: The Photo Method
Ask a friend to take a straight-on photo at eye level, about a metre away, with your hair pulled back. Avoid selfies taken at arm's length with a wide-angle front camera, as they distort features and make the nose and centre of the face look larger.
Open the photo in any editing app and draw lines across the forehead, cheekbones and jaw, and one line from hairline to chin. Comparing lines on a photo is often easier than on a mirror. It also gives you a record to show your stylist.
Matching Face Shape to Haircut, Jewellery and Necklines
Round faces suit long layers, side parts and lobs that end below the chin. Oval faces can wear almost anything, from blunt bobs to long shags. Square faces look best with soft waves, wispy layers and side-swept fringes. Heart faces suit chin-length bobs and side-swept bangs that add width at the jaw.
Long faces suit bangs and shoulder-length cuts with side volume. Diamond faces suit side-swept fringes, chin-length bobs and tucked styles. These are the starting points; your hair type, lifestyle and personal taste refine the choice.
The same principles help you pick earrings. Round and long faces mirror each other: round faces suit long, linear drops, while long faces suit wide hoops and round jhumkas. Heart and diamond faces suit earrings that are wider at the bottom, like jhumkas and chandbalis. Square faces benefit from curved shapes such as hoops and ovals.
Necklines work similarly. V-necks lengthen round faces, boat necks widen long faces, and scoop necks soften square jaws. When hair, earrings and neckline all follow the same logic, the whole look becomes noticeably more balanced.
Putting Face Shape to Work at the Salon
Face shape tells you where to place volume and lines, but hair type tells you what is realistic. A round face with fine straight hair needs root lift for crown height, while a round face with thick wavy hair needs bulk removed at the sides. Two women with the same face shape can need very different cuts.
Before your next salon visit, note both: your face shape from the tests above, and your hair type, whether fine, medium or thick, and straight, wavy or curly. Share both with your stylist along with reference photos of women with similar hair texture.
Tell your stylist your face shape and what you want to balance, such as adding length, softening the jaw or widening the forehead. Ask how the cut will fall in your natural texture and what daily styling it needs.
A good stylist will look at your face, hair and lifestyle together. If they suggest something different from the face-shape rules, ask why. Sometimes your features or hair type make another choice better, and that conversation is how you get a cut you love.
When you are ready to try a new look, our hairstyle guides by face shape, hair type and length walk through specific cuts and styling steps for each shape described above.
Common Face-Shape Mistakes
The first is measuring with hair down, which hides the true forehead and jaw. The second is tilting the head. The third is relying on a single selfie. The fourth is forcing yourself into one category when you are clearly a mix.
Remember that face shape can change with age, weight and even hormones. If a haircut that used to suit you no longer feels right, repeat the test. It takes ten minutes and can save you from a disappointing salon visit.
