How to fix ripped jeans: choose your method
To fix ripped jeans, place a denim patch inside the hole and stitch around it by hand or machine, or darn over thinning areas with rows of stitching. For a quick fix, use an iron-on patch inside. For a decorative look, try sashiko-style visible mending with contrast thread. Most repairs take under an hour and add years to a pair you love.
The best time to repair is early, when fabric is thin but not yet a hole. Inner thigh and crotch areas wear first, especially for women whose thighs touch while walking, so check them each time you wash.
Assess the damage first. Small worn thin spots and holes up to the size of a coin are easy to repair at home. Large tears across the thigh or seat can still be fixed but may need a large patch or a tailor. Seam splits, where stitches have broken but fabric is intact, are simplest of all.

Gather materials
You need a denim patch slightly larger than the hole, ideally cut from old jeans in a similar wash, strong thread in matching blue or a contrast colour, a sharp needle or a sewing machine with a denim needle, pins, scissors and an iron. Fusible interfacing or iron-on patches are useful for quick fixes.
Keep an old pair of jeans as a patch library. The lower legs give plenty of fabric for repairs in matching weights.
A seam split along the inner leg or seat can be fixed by turning the jeans inside out, pinning the seam back into place and stitching along the original line with strong thread. Reinforce with a second line of stitching for areas of high stress.
Method 1: inside patch for thigh holes
Turn the jeans inside out. Trim loose threads around the hole, but do not cut the fabric bigger. Cut a patch at least two centimetres larger than the worn area on all sides, round the corners and pin it over the hole on the inside.
Turn the jeans right side out. Stitch over the hole area back and forth in parallel lines, by machine with a straight or zigzag stitch, or by hand with a running stitch, covering the entire thin area and anchoring it to the patch. Use thread that matches the denim colour so it blends. Trim the patch edges inside if needed. This is the most durable repair for the inner thighs.
If the colours of the patch and jeans do not match exactly, place the patch inside so only a small area shows through the hole. The dense stitching over the top covers most of the patch. Choose thread that matches the jeans, not the patch, for the most invisible result.
For holes near seams, extend the patch a little past the seam and stitch along the seam line too. This anchors the patch to the strongest part of the jeans and stops the repair from pulling away when you sit or bend.
Method 2: darning thin spots
Darning reinforces fabric before it becomes a hole. With a sewing machine, set a short straight stitch and sew back and forth over the thin area, then turn the jeans and sew across at right angles, creating a dense grid. By hand, weave rows of running stitches across the area, then weave perpendicular rows through them.
Use matching thread on dark denim. A darned crotch or thigh area can last as long as the rest of the jeans.
Darning works best on the inner thigh area before it gets a hole. If you notice the fabric is thin and lighter, darn it then, rather than waiting. A few minutes now can save a much bigger repair later and keeps the jeans looking neat.
Darning by machine is much faster with a darning foot or free-motion foot, which lets you move the fabric in any direction. If your machine does not have one, the regular foot with short back-and-forth stitches still works; just take your time over thicker areas.
Method 3: iron-on patches
Iron-on denim patches are quick. Place the patch inside the jeans behind the hole with the adhesive side facing the fabric. Cover with a pressing cloth and press firmly with a hot iron for the time stated on the pack. Let it cool.
Iron-on patches can lift after several washes, especially in high-friction areas. Adding a few stitches around the edges makes them last much longer.
For the strongest iron-on repair, wash and dry the jeans first so there are no fabric softener or oil residues that stop the glue from bonding. Press with firm, even pressure rather than sliding the iron back and forth, and let the patch cool completely before moving the jeans.
Method 4: sashiko-style visible mending
Sashiko is a Japanese stitching tradition; visible mending inspired by it uses simple running stitches in contrast thread, usually white or cream, over a patch. Place a patch behind or in front of the hole and stitch neat parallel lines across it. You can add crosses or grids for decoration.
It turns a repair into a design feature. Visible mending is part of the 2026 interest in repaired, long-lasting clothes, and it looks especially good on knees and back pockets of straight and wide-leg jeans.
For visible mending on dark jeans, white or cream thread looks classic. On light jeans, indigo or navy thread looks striking. Coloured threads like mustard, red or green give a playful, handmade feel that suits casual and Gen Z-inspired outfits.
Visible mending is also a lovely activity to do with friends or while watching a show, since it is calming and needs only a needle and thread. Many people start with one small patch and find they enjoy it enough to customise jackets, bags and shirts the same way.
Fixing other common damage
Torn belt loop: unpick the loop's ends, fold the frayed edge under and stitch it back on through a small patch inside the waistband for strength. Loose or missing button: replacement jeans buttons are hammered on with a backing tack; tailoring shops sell kits, or a local tailor can fit one quickly.
Broken zip: if the slider has come off one side, you can sometimes ease it back with pliers. If teeth are missing, a tailor can replace the zip. Torn back pocket corners: stitch back in place with a few tight stitches or a small bar tack.
Crotch blowouts, where the fabric wears through where the inseams meet, are common and fixable. Patch from inside with a generous piece of denim covering the whole worn area, then darn densely over it. A tailor can also reinforce the crotch with a gusset for extra comfort.
Prevent future rips
Thigh rub causes most holes. Rotate jeans so one pair does not take all the wear, wash less and gently, and consider bike shorts underneath on long walking days to reduce friction. Avoid sitting on rough surfaces.
Check worn spots every wash and darn early. Choosing heavier, rigid denim for daily wear also reduces holes, as thicker yarns resist abrasion better than thin stretch fabric.
Keeping a basic repair kit helps: denim needles, strong thread in blue and white, a few denim patches cut from old jeans, iron-on interfacing and safety pins. Most small repairs take minutes, and a well-maintained pair can last for many years.
For rips you want to keep, such as fashion knee rips, a few small stitches at each end of the slit stop it from growing. Sew across the edges on the inside with matching thread, so the rip stays the same size through many washes.
