The best way to fold a t-shirt
The best way to fold t-shirts for most wardrobes is the KonMari file fold: fold the tee into a long rectangle, then into thirds so it stands upright in a drawer like a file. You see every tee at once, nothing gets crushed, and you fit almost twice as many tees in the same space.
Folding matters more than people think. A good fold prevents creases, stretched shoulders and that wardrobe avalanche every morning. Here are five methods, when to use each and how to store tees in compact Indian homes.
The right fold also depends on where you store tees. Drawers suit the file fold, open shelves suit the classic fold, and suitcases suit the roll. Most homes benefit from using two or three methods.

Method 1: the classic shop fold
Lay the tee face down on a bed or table and smooth it flat. Fold one side in towards the centre, so the sleeve and a third of the body fold over. Fold the sleeve back along the edge to make a straight line.
Repeat on the other side. You now have a long rectangle. Fold the bottom up by a third, then again to meet the collar, or fold in half for a larger tee.
Turn it over. The front of the tee, with any print, faces up. This fold stacks neatly on shelves and looks like a store display.
Use it for open shelves and almirah stacks, but keep stacks short, about five to seven tees, so the bottom ones do not crease heavily.
Use a sheet of cardboard or a magazine as a folding guide if you want every tee to be exactly the same width. Place it below the collar, fold the sides over it, then slide it out. Shops use the same trick.
Method 2: the KonMari file fold
Start with the classic long rectangle. Then fold the hem up towards the collar, leaving a small gap. Fold in half or thirds again until the tee is a compact rectangle that can stand on its edge.
Place tees upright in a drawer or box, like files in a cabinet. Arrange by colour or by sleeve length for an easy morning choice.
This method is ideal for drawers, under-bed storage boxes and the tiny shelves common in rented flats and hostel rooms.
It also reduces wear because you lift one tee out without pulling others from a stack.
To keep upright tees from falling over in a wide drawer, use shoe boxes or small cardboard dividers as compartments. They cost nothing and make the drawer look organised.
Method 3: the military roll
Lay the tee flat and fold the hem up from the inside out by about three inches, creating a pocket. Fold both sides in to make a long rectangle with sleeves folded in.
Roll tightly from the collar down towards the hem. When you reach the end, flip the pocket over the roll to lock it closed.
The result is a firm, compact cylinder that does not unroll. It is perfect for backpacks, trolley bags and weekend trips to Lonavala or Mussoorie.
Rolling also reduces sharp creases, so tees come out of the bag looking reasonable without ironing.
Rolled tees also work in drawers for small homes. Stand them upright in rows, like rolled towels in a hotel bathroom, for an easy visual inventory.
Method 4: the 2-second fold
Lay the tee face up with the collar to your left. Imagine a line running lengthwise down the middle. Pinch a point on that line at the shoulder with your left hand and a point at the middle of the line with your right hand.
Cross your left hand over your right and pinch the hem directly below your left hand's starting position. Lift both hands, uncross them and shake, then lay the tee down, folding the remaining half underneath.
It takes a few tries to learn but is a fun, fast way to fold a full laundry basket.
It works best on regular fit tees; very oversized tees may need a final adjustment.
Practice with an old tee a few times before folding a whole basket. Once your hands learn the motion, a stack of ten tees takes under a minute.
Method 5: folding oversized and graphic tees
For oversized tees, fold the sides in further, so each side covers about a third of the body. Then fold the length into thirds. This avoids a bulky, wide square.
For graphic tees, fold inside out to protect the print from rubbing, or keep the print on the outside but place tissue paper over it if the print is delicate or puff-textured.
Avoid folding directly across a large print; shift the fold line slightly so the crease does not crack the design over time.
Store heavy tees on lower shelves and lighter tees on top to reduce pressure creases.
For crop tops and baby tees, fold the sleeves in and then fold once in half widthwise. They are small enough to file-fold in a single row and do not need the extra length folds.
Organise your t-shirt drawer by use
Once your tees are folded, sort them by how you use them: everyday basics, office-ready tees, graphic and casual tees, workout tees and sleep tees. Each group gets its own row or box.
Within each group, arrange by colour from light to dark. It is easier to plan outfits when you can see every white, grey and black tee at once, and you will quickly notice gaps or duplicates.
Keep seasonal tees separate. Heavy oversized and waffle tees can go to the top shelf in summer, and very light tees can move up during winter.
Do a quick review every three months. If a tee has not been worn in a full season, consider whether it still fits your style, then donate, repurpose or keep with intention.
For hostel rooms and rented flats with tiny storage, a hanging fabric shelf organiser inside the almirah gives you extra stacked compartments without any installation, ideal for file-folded or rolled tees.
Under-bed storage boxes with breathable fabric sides are excellent for off-season tees. Add a sachet of neem leaves or a cedar block, and air the box out every few months.
Folding mistakes to avoid
Folding tees while still slightly warm or damp traps moisture and creates set-in creases. Let them cool and dry completely first.
Making very tall stacks crushes the bottom tees and creates deep creases. Keep stacks short or use the file fold instead.
Folding sharp creases across prints can crack them over time. Move the fold line slightly or roll graphic tees.
Squeezing too many tees into one drawer forces you to pull and tug every morning, which stretches fabric and undoes your neat folds. Leave a little breathing room.
Should t-shirts be hung or folded?
Most tees should be folded. Knit fabric stretches under its own weight on a hanger, especially when damp or heavy, creating shoulder bumps and a longer, misshapen body.
Hanging works for a few tees you want crease-free, such as a smart tee for office, but use wide padded hangers and insert them from the hem rather than stretching the neck.
In humid monsoon months, make sure folded tees have airflow. Do not pack drawers too tightly, and add a sachet of silica gel, neem leaves or cedar balls to keep moisture and insects away.
Air out the almirah on sunny days and refold tees occasionally to prevent permanent fold lines.
