How to hem jeans at home: overview
To hem jeans at home, measure your ideal length with your usual shoes on, mark it with chalk, then choose a method: the original hem method keeps the factory stitched edge by folding and sewing above it; a classic double fold creates a new stitched hem; hemming tape gives a no-sew option; and a raw cut creates a trendy frayed edge. Each takes 30 to 90 minutes.
Most Indian women are told jeans are too long, since many ready-made inseams run long. Hemming at home saves a trip to the tailor and lets you fine-tune length for different shoes.
A quick tip on shoes: if you wear both sneakers and heels with the same pair, measure for your heels if the jeans are flared or wide, and cuff them for sneakers. For straight jeans, measure for flats and wear a slight crop with heels, which looks intentional.

Step 1: measure correctly
Wash and dry the jeans first if they are new and could shrink. Put them on with the shoes you will wear most with them. For straight and wide-leg jeans with sneakers, the hem should just touch the top of the shoe or skim the floor at the back. For ankle-length, the hem should end at or just above the ankle bone.
Fold the hem under to the desired length and pin it, then check in a mirror while standing and walking. Measure the fold on both legs because legs can differ slightly. Mark the new length with tailor's chalk or a sliver of soap.
If the jeans are already worn and washed, you can measure without washing first. For new rigid cotton jeans that are not labelled pre-shrunk, wash and dry them once before measuring, because they may lose a little length in the first wash.
Method 1: keep the original hem
This method keeps the worn, factory hem that looks so much better than a new one. Fold the hem upward on the outside, creating a cuff, so that the distance from the bottom of the fold to the original hem's stitch line equals the amount you want to remove, divided by two. Pin all the way round.
Sew a straight line right next to the original hem's bottom edge, through the folded layers, using a denim needle and strong thread. Trim the excess fabric inside, leaving about a centimetre, and finish it with zigzag stitch. Fold the original hem down and press it. The new seam hides inside, and the outside looks factory finished.
The original hem method works best when you need to remove at least two centimetres. For very small adjustments, a simple cuff often looks better than any alteration. Also note that this method adds a little bulk inside the hem, so it suits medium and heavy denim more than very thin fabric.
Method 2: the classic double-fold hem
Cut the jeans about three centimetres below your chalk line. Fold the raw edge up by about one centimetre, press with a hot iron, then fold again along the chalk line so the raw edge is enclosed, and press firmly. Pin.
Stitch around close to the top of the fold using a longer stitch length and a denim needle. Use a matching gold or tan thread if you want it to look like original topstitching. At the thick side seams, turn the wheel by hand and go slowly to avoid breaking the needle. A small hammer to flatten the seam bulk first helps a lot.
Thread colour matters for the final look. Most blue jeans use a gold, mustard or copper thread for topstitching, which you can buy in tailoring shops. Black jeans usually have black or grey thread, and white jeans have white or cream. Matching it makes your hem look factory-made.
Method 3: hand-sewn hem without a machine
No machine? Use the double-fold method and stitch by hand with a strong needle and doubled polyester thread. A backstitch along the fold gives a durable, machine-like line. A blind hem stitch hides better but is less sturdy on denim.
Hand hemming takes longer, perhaps an hour per pair, but it is perfectly strong. Use a thimble because denim is thick, and wax the thread with a candle to reduce tangling.
If you are new to hand sewing, practise a few stitches on a scrap of denim cut from an old pair first. Getting the stitch length and tension right on a test piece saves frustration and gives you a neater hem on the jeans you actually care about.
Method 4: no-sew hemming tape
Iron-on fusible hemming tape is sold in tailoring shops and online. Fold the hem to the right length, place the tape inside the fold, cover with a damp cloth and press firmly with a hot iron for the time stated on the pack.
It is fast and invisible but may loosen after many washes, especially on heavy denim. It is a good temporary fix for travel or if you are unsure of the final length. Re-press if it starts to lift.
Method 5: raw, frayed hem
Raw hems are popular on straight, cropped and wide-leg jeans in 2026. Cut straight across with sharp fabric scissors, slightly longer than the final length. Wash and dry the jeans and the edge will fray naturally. Pull out a few horizontal threads with a pin to speed the fringe.
To stop fraying from travelling upward, sew a straight line about one to two centimetres above the cut edge. This gives a controlled fringe that lasts.
Raw hems also suit denim skirts and shorts. On a midi skirt, a frayed edge gives a relaxed, summery feel. On shorts, cut slightly longer than you want and let the fray shorten the look. Always secure with a line of stitching for neat results after washing.
Tools you need and hemming by leg shape
A sewing machine with a denim or jeans needle, size 90 to 100, is the most helpful tool, but not essential. You will also need sharp fabric scissors, pins or clips, a tape measure, tailor's chalk or soap, an iron and strong thread. Polyester or polyester-wrapped cotton thread is stronger than plain cotton. Gold or tan topstitching thread mimics most original jeans hems.
Optional but useful: a small hammer to flatten bulky side seams, a seam ripper for mistakes, and a hump jumper or a folded piece of cardboard to level the presser foot over thick seams. All of these are available at local tailoring supply shops for a small cost.
Skinny and slim jeans: the leg opening is narrow and often tapered, so the original hem method works especially well. Cut too much using a double fold and the opening may become tighter than you like. Straight and mom jeans: any method works; a raw hem looks especially current with loafers.
Wide-leg and flared jeans: measure at the back of the hem, as the front tends to sit higher over the foot. These styles look best long, just skimming the floor in your chosen shoes, so test with heels if you will wear them. Barrel and curved jeans: hem minimally, because the curved shape relies on the original length to look right.
Tips and common mistakes
Always cut less than you think you need; you can trim more later. Test the final length with both flats and heels if you wear both. For flared and bootcut jeans, keep them longer than straight jeans because the shape looks best when the hem covers most of the shoe.
Avoid hemming stretch skinny jeans too short; they ride up when you sit. And remember that wide-leg jeans can taper slightly toward the hem, so cutting too much may change the width. When in doubt, use the original hem method, which removes length cleanly without altering the leg opening much.
