How to make a denim skirt from jeans: overview
To make a denim skirt from old jeans, cut the legs off at your chosen length, unpick the inner leg seam and crotch curve, lay the front and back flat so they overlap, and sew triangle-shaped panels cut from the leftover legs into the gaps at the front and back. Finish the hem raw, folded or with the original hem. It takes an afternoon and works with or without a sewing machine.
This is one of the most satisfying upcycles because you get a skirt with real jeans details, such as the pockets, fly and waistband, that would be expensive to buy new. It also rescues jeans that fit perfectly at the waist but feel wrong in the legs.
Expect the first one to be imperfect, and that is part of the charm. Most people find their second skirt goes much faster and looks more polished, once they understand how the fabric behaves and how the overlaps change the way the skirt hangs.

Choose the right pair
The waist and hips must fit you well, because those parts become the skirt's waistband and hip. High-rise mom jeans, straight jeans and boyfriend jeans make the nicest skirts because they have room at the hips. Skinny jeans can work for a fitted mini but leave less fabric for the panels.
For a midi or maxi skirt, you need extra fabric from a second pair, ideally in the same wash or a contrasting one for a patchwork look. Rigid cotton denim is easier to sew and hangs better than very stretchy denim.
Wash and dry the jeans before starting, even if they are already worn, so that any final shrinkage happens before you cut. Remove any belts or chains, and decide whether you want to keep the back pockets visible, which they will be in a classic jeans skirt.
Step 1: cut and unpick
Put the jeans on and mark the hem length you want with chalk, adding three to four centimetres for a mini or knee-length skirt. Take them off and cut both legs straight across at that line. Keep the cut-off legs, as you will use them for panels.
Use a seam ripper to unpick the inner leg seam all the way up and around the crotch curve, from the front zip area to the bottom of the back yoke. Go slowly; denim seams are flat-felled and thick. You will now have a front and back that can open out flat.
Keep the cut-off legs carefully folded, as they are your fabric supply for the panels. If they have a nice original hem, set it aside too. Some people keep the back pockets from a second pair for adding decoration later, such as a patch pocket on the front panel.
Step 2: flatten and overlap
Lay the jeans flat on a table, front facing up. Overlap the front crotch curves so the centre front lies straight and flat, and pin. Turn it over and do the same with the back curves. The overlap will leave a triangular gap below the crotch at both the front and back.
Topstitch along the overlapped curves to secure them, using a denim needle and gold or matching thread. Try the skirt on at this stage to check it sits evenly and the side seams are straight. Adjust if one side drops.
If the skirt pulls to one side when you try it on, it is usually because the overlaps are uneven. Unpin, lay the skirt flat again, and adjust so the centre front and centre back seams line up with your navel and spine. Take your time; this step determines how the skirt hangs.
Step 3: fill the gaps with panels
Slip one of the cut-off legs under the front gap so the denim covers the triangle completely, with the leg's direction of grain running vertically. Pin, then turn the skirt over and trim the panel, leaving about two centimetres around the gap. Repeat at the back.
Turn the skirt right side out. Fold the raw edges of the gap under slightly and topstitch close to the edge, attaching the panel. Use two lines of stitching to imitate a classic jeans seam. Trim the excess panel from the inside.
For a cleaner finish, some people fold the raw edges of the panel under too, so no fraying shows on the inside. This takes more time but gives a neater skirt, especially if the panel is a contrasting wash and will be noticed. A final press with a hot iron makes everything sit flat.
Choose panel fabric with care. A panel from the same pair blends in almost invisibly, while a contrast wash turns the panel into a feature. Either works, but avoid mixing very stretchy and very rigid denim, because the panel may pucker or pull when you sit or walk.
Making midi and maxi versions
For a longer skirt, the original legs provide most of the length. Instead of cutting at the knee, cut much lower, or keep the full length and open both inseams, then insert long triangular godets, made from another pair's leg, at the front, back and even the side seams for a flared, A-line shape. This creates the patchwork maxi skirts that are popular in 2026.
Mixing two washes, such as mid blue and light blue or blue and black, gives the panels a deliberate designer look. Add a front slit instead of a panel at the front for easy walking.
For a modern A-line midi, use two pairs in the same wash and cut the legs from the second pair into long panels for the sides as well as the front and back. This adds swing at the hem. Hem it just below the knee for a polished length that works for office and weekend outings alike.
Finishing the hem
Raw hem: cut evenly, wash and dry, and sew a line of stitching one to two centimetres above the edge to control fraying. This is the easiest and looks casual. Folded hem: fold up one centimetre, press, fold again, press and stitch.
Original hem: if you are making a maxi skirt from the full leg, the original hem of the jeans becomes the skirt hem, which saves time and looks factory finished.
Hand sewing works best if you mark every stitching line with chalk first and keep stitches small and even, about three to four millimetres. Take breaks, as pushing a needle through layers of denim tires the fingers. A thimble on your middle finger makes it much easier.
No sewing machine? Here is how
Everything above can be done by hand with strong doubled thread and a thimble. Use backstitch for the main seams, as it is strong and resembles machine stitching. It will take longer, but the result is durable.
Alternatively, a local tailor can do the panel work for a small fee once you have unpicked and pinned it. Many women in India get custom denim skirts made this way.
A DIY denim skirt also works well for travel because denim is durable and hides creases. Pair it with a linen shirt and sandals for a day of sightseeing in Jaipur or Goa, and swap in a crop top and wedges for a relaxed evening out.
Styling your DIY denim skirt
A mini looks great with a fitted tee, chunky sneakers and a sling bag for college. A midi works with a tucked-in blouse, loafers or kolhapuris for a smart weekend look. A patchwork maxi pairs well with a crop top, oxidised jewellery and juttis for a festival-inspired fusion outfit.
In winter, wear the skirt with opaque tights, ankle boots and a knit sweater, and you have a cosy, practical outfit.
