How to pack a blazer without creasing: the best method
The best way to pack a blazer without creasing is the inside-out shoulder fold: turn one shoulder inside out, tuck the other shoulder into it, fold the blazer in half lengthwise, then once across the middle and lay it flat at the top of your suitcase. This protects the outer fabric, keeps the shoulders shaped and puts the only fold on the lining, where it does not show.
If you have space, a garment folder or the bundle method is even gentler. And if you only have a cabin bag, wearing the blazer on board is often the simplest option.
Whichever method you choose, two principles hold. First, protect the outer fabric by keeping folds on the lining. Second, keep the blazer at the top of the bag, where nothing heavy presses on it.

Method 1: The inside-out shoulder fold
Practise the fold once at home in front of a mirror. It feels awkward the first time, but after two or three tries it takes under a minute and becomes second nature.
The method works for most single-breasted and double-breasted blazers, as well as structured jackets in Indian menswear and womenswear such as bandhgalas and Nehru jackets. For jackets with heavy shoulder pads, avoid pressing the shoulders flat; let them nest naturally into each other and support them with a rolled scarf if needed.
Check pockets before folding. Pens, keys and phones in pockets create pressure points that leave marks on the fabric.
Hold the blazer by the shoulders, facing you. Turn the left shoulder inside out, so the lining faces outwards. Now push the right shoulder into the inverted left shoulder, so the two shoulders nest together. The blazer is now folded in half lengthwise with the lining on the outside and the outer fabric protected inside.
Smooth the sleeves straight along the body. Lay the folded blazer flat. If your case is long enough, leave it at this length. If not, fold it once across the middle, ideally over a rolled T-shirt so the fold is a soft curve. Place it at the top of the case, directly under the compression strap.
Method 2: Bundle wrapping
It also helps to keep the blazer's lapels flat during wrapping. Smooth them with your palm before folding the first layer over, and make sure the collar lies straight. A bent lapel is the most visible crease a blazer can show.
Bundle wrapping is ideal when you are packing a full suit or several pieces of formal wear. If you are only taking one blazer and casual clothes, the shoulder fold is quicker and almost as effective.
For maximum protection, especially for a linen or lightweight wool blazer, use the bundle method. Lay the blazer face up as the first layer of a bundle, with trousers, shirts and softer items stacked on top in alternating directions. Place a small pouch of socks and innerwear in the centre, then fold each layer around it, with the blazer as the final outer shell.
The blazer never folds sharply; it curves around the core. This is the method many business travellers use for suits.
Method 3: Garment folder or suiter
If you do not own a garment folder, a dry-cleaning bag works as a budget substitute. Slide the blazer into the bag on its hanger, fold it lengthwise and then in half, and lay it flat on top. The plastic layer lets the fabric slide rather than crease at the folds.
A garment folder is a flat, structured envelope with a folding board that holds a blazer or a few shirts at a fixed size. It slides into the top of a cabin trolley or a medium check-in case and keeps tailoring flat. Some premium business suitcases include a built-in suiter compartment with a hanger hook.
For frequent business travel, a dedicated suiter bag or a cabin trolley with a garment section from brands such as Samsonite or Tumi is worth considering; check product details for what is included. For wedding season, a garment bag that carries a blazer and a festive outfit together saves a lot of steaming.
Method 4: Wear it on the plane
Consider what you wear under the blazer too. A crease-resistant shirt or knit top under a blazer makes a polished travel outfit, and you avoid packing two layers. On short domestic flights such as Mumbai to Bengaluru, wearing the blazer straight into a meeting saves both time and luggage space.
The simplest method is to wear the blazer. It saves space in your bag, keeps the shoulders shaped and you will look smart on arrival. On board, take it off, fold it lining-out in half and place it on top of everything in the overhead bin, or ask the cabin crew whether there is a wardrobe, which is common in business class on many airlines.
Choose a travel-friendly blazer for this: crepe, knitted jersey or stretch wool blends with a soft structure. These resist creasing during long flights and still look polished at a meeting in Delhi or a dinner in Dubai.
Fabrics that travel best
Colour matters a little. Mid-tones such as navy, grey and camel hide light creases better than black or white. A navy wool-blend blazer is one of the most useful travel pieces a woman can own, working with trousers, jeans, dresses and even a kurta.
Fabric decides how much effort you will need. Wool blends with a little stretch and knitted jersey blazers recover from packing within minutes of hanging. Crepe and ponte are similarly forgiving. Pure linen and cotton creases readily and needs careful packing or acceptance of a relaxed look.
Velvet and silk blazers for weddings and evening events are delicate; use a garment folder or bundle them, and never press them directly with an iron. Embellished jackets should travel in a breathable garment bag on top of everything else.
Where to place a blazer in your suitcase
For a duffle trip, consider a light hanger bag. Some weekenders are designed with a slim garment section in the lid; if yours is not, fold the blazer lining out and lay it on top, then close the duffle without forcing the zip. Carry the duffle by its handles rather than squashing it under other bags.
Always pack a blazer at the top of the case, where it experiences the least pressure. Keep it away from shoes, toiletries and anything heavy. In a 50:50 clamshell, lay it flat under the zip divider. In a duffle, lay it flat across packing cubes and close the bag gently.
Avoid placing a folded blazer in a compression bag or compression cube. The pressure sets creases in the canvas and lapels that are hard to remove.
Removing creases on arrival
Back home, give the blazer a rest before wearing it again. Hang it for a day so the fibres relax, brush it with a soft clothes brush to remove dust, and take it for professional pressing only when needed. Frequent pressing shortens the life of wool tailoring.
Hang the blazer immediately on a proper hanger with shaped shoulders, not a wire hanger. Many creases fall out within an hour. For stubborn lines, hang it in the bathroom while you shower and let the steam relax the fibres. A handheld travel steamer is effective, as is a hotel pressing service.
Do not iron directly on the outer fabric of wool or velvet. Use a pressing cloth or steam from a distance.
Choose the right bag for tailoring
When you shop for a business case, check the depth of the lid compartment and whether the compression panel is flat. A flat, wide panel holds a folded blazer far better than straps, which can create lines across the lapels.
If you regularly pack blazers, choose a suitcase with a flat interior and compression panels or a dedicated garment section. A structured leather weekender with a flat base also works for short trips.
