How to pack dresses for travel: match the method to the fabric
To pack dresses for travel, match the method to the fabric: roll jersey, modal and knit dresses tightly, fold cotton, crepe and silk dresses lengthwise in thirds with tissue and lay them flat on top, and carry sequinned or structured dresses inside out in a garment folder or garment bag. The fabric, not the length, decides how a dress should travel.
Dresses are the most useful pieces in a holiday wardrobe, one item makes a whole outfit, but they are also the most likely to arrive creased. The methods below keep them ready to wear.

Dresses that travel well
The best travel dresses are made of jersey, modal, viscose crepe, knitted cotton, polyester crepe or fabrics with a little stretch. They roll without creasing, dry quickly if washed in a hotel room and look smart without ironing. A black jersey midi, a printed wrap dress and a knitted shirt dress cover most occasions.
Linen and cotton poplin dresses look wonderful in Goa or Santorini but crease easily. Silk slip dresses are light but mark easily. Sequin, beaded and heavily embellished dresses need special care. Choose one delicate dress at most and build the rest of your wardrobe around forgiving fabrics.
Think about the climate too. In humid destinations such as Singapore, Kerala or Bali, breathable cotton-blend and viscose dresses keep you cool and dry quickly. For winter trips to Europe, a knitted midi dress with tights and boots is warm, versatile and nearly crease-proof. One dress that can be layered is more useful than three that cannot.
Colour and print matter as well. Busy prints and darker shades hide creases better than pale solids, so a printed wrap dress is a safer choice for a long journey than a white cotton shift.
Method 1: Rolling knit and jersey dresses
Lay the dress face down. Fold the sleeves or straps in towards the centre. Fold the dress in half lengthwise. Then roll tightly from the hem towards the neckline, smoothing as you go. The result is a firm cylinder that fits the base layer of a suitcase or a packing cube.
Rolling is ideal for maxi dresses in jersey, beach kaftans, sundresses and casual shirt dresses. A long maxi rolls into a compact tube that fits along the side of a cabin trolley.
For extra protection, roll a dress around a soft core such as a pair of leggings or a T-shirt. The core makes a fatter, gentler roll with fewer tight curves, which reduces ripples. This is especially useful for printed jersey, where creases show more on light colours.
Do not roll dresses with structured bodices, boning, padding or built-in cups. Rolling bends the structure and leaves permanent marks. Fold these instead.
Rolled dresses also make it easy to see your options. Line them up in a packing cube like a row of scrolls, and you can pick the day's dress without unpacking anything else.
Method 2: Folding crepe, cotton and silk dresses
Lay the dress face down and smooth it. Fold each side in towards the centre along the side seams, so you have a long, narrow rectangle. Place a sheet of tissue paper or a dry-cleaning bag over the dress, then fold it in half or thirds from the hem upwards, depending on the length of your case.
Lay folded dresses flat on top of everything else. A midi dress folded in thirds fits the width of a cabin trolley neatly. Folding the skirt at the waistline hides the crease in the dress's natural shaping.
For silk dresses, place tissue inside each fold as well as outside. Silk marks where it rubs against itself, and tissue prevents that friction. Pack silk away from anything with Velcro, zips or rough textures that can snag the fibres.
For cotton dresses, especially those with gathered skirts or tiers, fold along the tiers so the creases fall into the gathers where they disappear. A tiered cotton maxi from a summer holiday in Goa can look freshly pressed on arrival if every fold lines up with a seam.
Method 3: Garment folders and bags
For sequinned, beaded or structured dresses, turn the dress inside out so the embellishment is protected, place it in a breathable garment bag or a garment folder, and lay it flat on top of the case. Avoid plastic bags for long periods, which can trap moisture.
For cocktail dresses and gowns on formal trips, a dedicated garment bag carried on board is often best. Ask cabin crew whether there is a wardrobe on long-haul flights, particularly in premium cabins.
If you are attending an event abroad, consider whether it is easier to pack the dress in a cabin bag than to check it. Delayed checked bags are not common, but if it happens the day before a wedding or a gala dinner, you will be glad the dress travelled with you.
Packing different lengths
Mini dresses fold once and lie flat. Midi dresses fold in thirds. Maxi dresses either roll or fold in four, depending on fabric. For very long gowns, fold the skirt along the length of the case first, then fold the bodice over it so the bodice stays smooth.
Use the full length of a medium or large case for long dresses. A 70 cm case laid flat can hold a maxi dress with just two folds.
A wrap dress is the easiest to pack because it opens flat. Lay it open, fold the wrap sections over each other, fold the sleeves in and fold the whole dress in thirds. It barely creases and is one of the most useful dresses to travel with, working for city days, dinners and meetings.
Measure your case before packing long gowns. If the case is shorter than the dress folded in half, choose a larger suitcase or a garment bag; forcing a third fold across a full skirt nearly always leaves a visible line.
Where dresses go in the case
Put the most delicate dress at the very top, under the compression strap or divider panel. Rolled dresses go in the base layer or in a packing cube. Keep dresses away from shoes, belts with metal buckles and jewellery that can snag.
In a duffle, lay a folded dress across the top of packing cubes. In a backpack, roll dresses and pack them in the middle.
When you pack several dresses, stack them alternately, one with the neckline at the top of the case and the next with the neckline at the bottom. This keeps the stack level and prevents a thick ridge forming at one end that would press creases into the dresses below.
If you are packing a dress you plan to wear on the first evening, place it last so it comes out first. Hang it in the bathroom as soon as you arrive, and the steam from your shower will be enough to make it ready for dinner.
Accessories and shoes for dresses
Choose accessories that work with every dress you pack: a pair of neutral sandals, a pair of block heels, a clutch and a light layer such as a cardigan or blazer. These turn one dress into several looks, from day to evening.
Pack belts flat around the inside edge of the suitcase, not coiled, which creates a hard ridge that marks fabric. Pack jewellery in a roll in your carry-on.
A versatile layering piece makes a dress wardrobe go further. A cropped denim jacket, a fine cardigan or a lightweight blazer changes a summer dress into an evening look or makes it suitable for an air-conditioned office. Choose a layer in a neutral that works with every dress you pack.
Unpacking and refreshing dresses
Hang dresses as soon as you arrive. Knits relax in minutes; crepe and silk within an hour. Steam the rest in the bathroom during a shower, or use a hotel pressing service for linen and cotton. Never iron sequins or beading directly.
