How to pack electronics and chargers for travel
To pack electronics and chargers for travel, keep all devices, chargers and power banks in your carry-on, group cables and chargers in a single tech pouch, put the laptop and tablet in a padded sleeve where you can lift them out quickly at security, and pack a universal adaptor if you are going abroad. Spare lithium batteries and power banks generally must travel in the cabin, not in checked bags.
Electronics are valuable, fragile and often subject to specific airline rules. A simple system protects them, keeps you within the rules and makes security checks faster.

Why electronics belong in your carry-on
Checked bags are thrown, stacked and occasionally delayed or lost. A laptop or camera in a checked case is at risk of damage, theft and long delays. Most airlines also do not accept liability for valuables in checked baggage, so a broken laptop may not be covered.
Batteries are the other reason. Airlines and aviation authorities generally require power banks and spare lithium batteries to be carried in the cabin, often with limits based on their capacity in watt-hours. Devices with installed batteries are usually allowed in checked bags in some cases, but rules vary. Check your airline's current dangerous goods guidance before flying.
Smart luggage deserves a mention. Some suitcases have built-in battery packs for charging phones. Airlines generally require that these batteries be removable so they can be taken into the cabin if the bag is checked or gate-checked. Before you fly, know how to remove the battery, and check the airline's policy for your route.
Build a dedicated tech pouch
A tech pouch keeps every cable, charger and small device in one place. Choose one with elastic loops, mesh pockets and a padded section. Coil each cable loosely and secure it with a Velcro tie or a small elastic band. Never wrap cables tightly around chargers, which strains the joint and breaks the cable over time.
A good pouch for a woman travelling for work might hold a phone charger, a laptop charger, a watch charger, earbuds case, a power bank, a universal adaptor, a USB-C to Lightning adaptor and a short spare cable. Keeping a dedicated travel set of chargers means you never unplug and forget your home ones.
Consider a compact multi-port charger with a single plug. A good GaN charger with two or three USB-C ports can charge a laptop, phone and watch from one socket, replacing three bricks. That frees space in the pouch, reduces weight and solves the common hotel problem of having too few sockets near the bed.
Label the pouch's contents in your head and keep them identical every trip. When you repack at a hotel, a quick glance shows whether the watch charger or the adaptor is missing, before you have left the room.
Laptops, tablets and e-readers
Carry the laptop in a padded sleeve or a laptop compartment in your backpack or tote. Place it where you can slide it out for security screening, since many airports still require laptops to be removed from bags, although some airports with newer scanners do not. Keep the charger in the tech pouch, not in the laptop sleeve, to avoid pressure on the screen.
Tablets and e-readers travel in a padded pocket or sleeve. Avoid packing them under heavy items in a cabin trolley; place them flat against the back panel in the centre.
Protect the laptop's screen with a thin microfibre cloth between the keyboard and display when closed. Pressure in a crowded overhead bin can press the keys into the screen and leave marks. A slim hard-shell case adds a further layer of protection if you travel often.
Do not forget the laptop charger itself. It is the single most commonly forgotten item in hotel rooms, usually left plugged in behind a desk. Make unplugging it part of your checkout routine.
Phones, cameras and earbuds
Your phone goes in a secure, easily reachable pocket of your handbag or sling, never loose in a coat pocket. Cameras travel in a padded insert or camera cube inside your carry-on, with lenses capped and wrapped individually. Spare camera batteries go in a small case with terminals covered.
Earbuds and headphones travel in their case. Noise-cancelling headphones make long flights to Europe or the US far more pleasant; carry them in a hard case to protect the headband.
Download entertainment, maps and boarding passes before you leave home. Offline maps for a new city, a downloaded playlist for a long train ride and a saved copy of your hotel address save battery and data, and mean your phone works even when roaming is patchy in the hills or on a ferry to the islands.
Adaptors and power for abroad
India uses Type C, D and M sockets. Many destinations use different plugs: Type G in the UK, Singapore, Dubai and Malaysia; Type A and B in the US and Japan; Type C and F across much of Europe. A universal adaptor with USB ports covers most destinations and reduces the number of chargers you need.
Check the voltage. Most phone and laptop chargers handle a wide range of voltages, but hairdryers and straighteners may not. Dual-voltage hair tools are worth buying if you travel abroad often.
A short extension lead or a compact travel power strip with a single plug is useful in older hotels with one socket per room. Check that it is suitable for your destination's voltage, and avoid cheap unbranded strips that can overheat. Many travellers carry one plug adaptor and a small strip rather than several adaptors.
Packing tech in your carry-on bag
A structured backpack or tote with a padded laptop compartment, a quick-access pocket for the liquids bag and a separate pouch for tech keeps security checks fast. Place the tech pouch near the top so you can reach a charger on the plane. Keep the power bank accessible in case cabin crew ask about it.
For a cabin trolley, use the front laptop pocket that many business trolleys have, or slide a laptop sleeve flat against the back panel. Brands such as Samsonite, Tumi and Mokobara offer trolleys and backpacks with dedicated tech compartments.
Think about weight here too. A laptop, chargers, power bank and camera can easily weigh three or four kilograms, more than half of a typical Indian domestic cabin allowance of around 7 kg. Check your airline's rules for cabin weight and whether a laptop bag counts as a separate personal item.
Keeping tech safe on the trip
In hotel rooms, use the safe for laptops and cameras when you are out. In humid climates, keep a silica gel pack in your camera bag to prevent condensation. In the monsoon, a waterproof pouch for your phone is worthwhile on Goa beaches or Kerala backwaters.
Back up photos daily to the cloud or a small drive, and keep the drive separate from the camera. If one bag is lost, you do not lose everything.
Be cautious with public USB charging points in airports and cafes. Use your own charger plugged into a power socket, or a power bank, rather than unknown USB ports. Keep your devices locked with a passcode and enable remote tracking in case they are lost.
On beaches and during water activities, keep electronics sealed in a dry bag and out of direct sun; phones and power banks overheat quickly on a sunlounger in Goa in April.
Common tech packing mistakes
Packing power banks in checked bags, forgetting the adaptor, wrapping cables tightly around chargers, packing the laptop under heavy items and carrying devices without a case are the most common mistakes. Another is bringing every gadget you own; for most trips a phone, a laptop or tablet, earbuds and a power bank are enough.
A well-organised carry-on makes travelling with tech simple. Explore our luxury travel bags edit for backpacks and trolleys with padded laptop compartments, and our sling bags for keeping your phone close.
Lastly, charge everything the night before departure. A fully charged phone, power bank and earbuds mean you are not hunting for a socket at the gate, and some airport security staff may ask you to switch a device on to show it works.
