How to pack fragile items in luggage: the core rule
To pack fragile items in luggage, wrap each item individually in a soft, shock-absorbing layer, place it in the centre of your suitcase surrounded on every side by clothes, and keep it away from the shell walls, wheels and handle. Where airline rules allow, carry the most precious or irreplaceable items in your cabin bag instead of checking them in.
Most breakages happen when a hard object meets a hard surface: glass against a shell, ceramic against a shoe heel. Every technique below is about adding distance and cushioning between fragile items and anything rigid.

Cabin or checked: decide first
Remember that cabin bags can also be at risk. Overhead bins are crowded and bags get pushed, and on full flights cabin bags are sometimes moved to the hold at the gate. If you are carrying something fragile on board, pack it in a soft-sided bag that you keep under the seat in front, not in a trolley that may be gate-checked.
Checked bags are thrown, stacked and dropped onto conveyor belts, so anything truly fragile or valuable is safer in the cabin. That includes jewellery, small ceramics, cameras, a laptop and anything sentimental. The trade-off is liquids: cabin rules in most countries typically restrict liquids to containers of around 100 ml in a clear bag, so full-size perfumes, wine, pickles and oils have to travel checked.
Confirm the current liquids, battery and duty-free rules with your airline and the airports on your route, especially for connecting international flights where duty-free purchases may need a sealed bag. Lithium batteries and power banks generally must stay in the cabin, not in checked luggage.
The right suitcase for fragile cargo
A hard-shell case offers the best protection. Polycarbonate flexes under impact and springs back, absorbing shocks that would crack a rigid ABS shell. Aluminium cases are the most protective of all, though they dent and are heavier. Soft-sided cases rely entirely on what you pack around the item, so they need much more padding.
Within any case, the centre is the safest zone. The corners, the wheel end and the area near the trolley tubes take the most force when a bag is dropped or stacked. Premium hard-shell cases from brands like Samsonite, Delsey and Tumi often include internal dividers and compression panels that help hold padded items in place.
Wrapping materials you already own
Clothing padding has one more advantage: it serves two purposes. Every sock wrapped around a perfume bottle is a sock you needed anyway, so you protect your fragile items without adding a single gram of packing material. Plan your wrapping at the same time as your outfits and you will rarely need to buy extra protection.
You do not need bubble wrap for most items. Thick socks are perfect for small bottles and perfume. Sweaters, hoodies and towels wrap larger items like vases or decorative plates. A rolled-up pair of jeans can surround a wine bottle. For extra protection, put the wrapped item inside a zip bag before wrapping it in clothing, so any leak is contained.
For valuable souvenirs, bring a few sheets of bubble wrap or foam packing sleeves; they fold flat and weigh almost nothing. Reusable inflatable wine sleeves are also excellent for bottles. Keep the original boxes for anything you buy that comes with protective packaging; shop boxes are designed for transit.
How to pack perfume and glass bottles
Pressure changes in the hold can force a little liquid past a loose cap, even if the bottle survives. That is why the zip bag matters; a leaking perfume can stain clothes and leave a scent that lasts for weeks. Double-bag oils, ghee or pickles brought from home, as these are both messy and hard to clean from a suitcase lining.
Tape the cap of each bottle down or wrap a strip of cling film around the neck to stop it popping off with pressure changes. Place the bottle in a small zip bag, then inside a sock, then into the toe of a shoe or the centre of a rolled sweater. Lay the bundle in the middle of the case, surrounded by soft clothes, with no hard objects nearby.
Wine and spirits from a trip to Nashik, Goa or France follow the same idea on a larger scale: zip bag, then an inflatable sleeve or a thick jumper, then a central position, with at least a few centimetres of soft clothing between the bottle and every wall of the case. Check customs allowances for alcohol before you buy.
Ceramics, pottery and handicrafts
Consider the weight too. Ceramics and glass are heavy, and a few pieces can push a checked bag over its allowance. Weigh the bag at the shop or hotel before heading to the airport, and if you are close to the limit, move clothes to your carry-on rather than moving the ceramics out of their protected position.
Blue pottery from Jaipur, Khurja ceramics, terracotta from Bankura or glassware from Firozabad are classic travel purchases and classic breakages. Wrap each piece individually; stuff hollow items such as cups and vases with socks or paper so they cannot collapse inwards, then wrap the outside in a sweater or bubble wrap.
Pack plates on their edges, not flat, like files in a drawer; they resist pressure better upright. Separate each piece with a folded garment so they cannot knock together. For very valuable or large handicrafts, ask the shop to pack them in a box with proper fill, or consider shipping them home.
Makeup, skincare and toiletries
Liquid foundation and serum bottles with droppers are prone to leaks. Unscrew the dropper, place a small square of cling film over the opening, then screw it back. The same trick works for nail polish. It takes a minute and prevents a lot of damage.
Pressed powders, eyeshadow palettes and highlighters crack easily. Place a cotton pad inside the compact before closing it, and pack palettes flat inside a padded toiletry case. Glass skincare bottles should travel in zip bags with lids taped. Pump bottles can be locked or covered with cling film beneath the cap.
Keep the toiletry case at the wheel end only if it contains plastic bottles. If it includes glass, move it to the centre of the case, surrounded by clothing. A structured, padded vanity case offers more protection than a soft pouch.
Electronics and accessories
Pack chargers and cables in a dedicated pouch so they cannot scratch screens or lenses. Wrap a phone in a soft cloth if it is not in a case, and keep spare batteries and power banks in your carry-on, as most airlines do not permit them in checked luggage; check the rules for your route.
Laptops, tablets, cameras and lenses should always travel in your cabin bag in padded sleeves. Sunglasses go in their hard case, never loose. Watches should travel in a watch roll or their box inside your carry-on. These items are both fragile and valuable, and a checked bag is the worst place for them.
If you must check a camera lens or a hard drive, use a padded insert and place it in the dead centre of the case, but this is a last resort.
Labels, insurance and final checks
When you arrive, unpack fragile items first. If anything has broken, photograph it before moving anything else; it helps any claim with the airline or insurer. Most airlines expect damage to be reported promptly at the airport, so check before you leave the baggage hall.
Before you close the case, gently shake it. If you hear a clink, re-wrap. Fill any remaining gaps with soft items so nothing can shift. Some travellers add a fragile tag to checked bags; it may help, but do not rely on it.
Take photographs of valuable items and keep receipts in case of damage. Check whether your travel insurance covers breakages in checked baggage. And when you shop for a new suitcase, prioritise a resilient polycarbonate or aluminium shell with a strong frame. Browse premium hard-shell cases in our travel bags edit, plus a padded handbag or tote for carrying fragile items on board.
