How to pack liquids to prevent leaks: the four-layer method
To pack liquids to prevent leaks, use four layers of defence: decant into good leak-proof travel bottles, seal each cap with cling film or tape, place bottles upright in a zip bag, and keep that bag inside a wipeable toiletry case packed upright in the suitcase, away from clothes. Each layer catches what the previous one misses, and together they stop a burst bottle from ruining a whole bag.
Leaks are caused by pressure changes in flight, squeezing from other luggage and caps loosening with vibration. Every step below targets one of those causes.

Why liquids leak when you fly
Aircraft cabins and holds are pressurised, but to a lower pressure than at ground level. Air trapped inside a half-full bottle expands as the plane climbs, pushing liquid out through any weakness in the cap. That is why a shampoo bottle that was fine on your bathroom shelf arrives with a sticky ring around its neck.
Pressure from outside the bottle is the second culprit. In a tightly packed suitcase, especially a soft-sided one, heavy items press on soft plastic tubes and pump bottles. Finally, flip-top caps and pumps can be knocked open by vibration and handling.
Temperature plays a smaller role. Holds on modern aircraft are generally temperature controlled, but bags can sit on hot tarmac in Chennai in May or in freezing conditions in Leh in January before loading. Heat thins oils and makes them more likely to seep, while cold can make some plastics brittle. A good seal handles both extremes.
Choose the right containers
Good travel bottles are made of soft silicone or thick plastic with a screw cap and an inner seal, not a flip-top. Silicone squeeze bottles are easy to fill and empty; rigid PET bottles with screw caps are better for thin liquids like toner. Avoid filling bottles to the brim. Leave about a fifth empty, then squeeze out the air before closing; this gives the contents room to expand.
Solid alternatives remove the problem entirely. Shampoo bars, conditioner bars, solid perfumes, stick sunscreens, cleansing balms and toothpaste tablets do not leak and do not count towards cabin liquid limits in most airports. For a short trip to Goa or Coorg, a kit of solids can replace most bottles.
Label every bottle. Decanted shampoo and conditioner look identical, and a hotel bathroom at 6 am is not the place to guess. A strip of masking tape and a marker, or coloured bottles for each product, solve this. Clean travel bottles thoroughly between trips with warm water and let them dry open, so old product does not go rancid inside.
Size them honestly. Most people use far less product on a trip than they expect. For a week, around 50 ml of shampoo, 30 ml of conditioner and 30 ml of moisturiser is usually plenty for one person. Smaller bottles leave more room in your liquids bag for the products you really need.
Seal every cap
Unscrew the cap, stretch a small square of cling film over the opening, and screw the cap back on over it. The film acts as a gasket. For pump bottles, lock the pump if it has a lock, or wrap a strip of tape around the neck so it cannot be pressed. For flip-tops, tape the lid closed.
Nail polish, serum droppers and essential oils deserve extra care. Wrap the cap and neck in tape and put each item in its own small zip bag. These are small, but the stains they leave are permanent.
For tubes, such as toothpaste and sunscreen, squeeze out the air before capping and wrap the cap end with a strip of tape. Tubes are more robust than bottles but can split at the crimped end under pressure, so pack them upright with the cap at the top.
Bag it, then bag it again
Put all liquids into a clear, resealable zip bag. For cabin baggage, this is usually required anyway. Airports in India and many other countries typically limit cabin liquids to containers of around 100 ml each in a transparent resealable bag of about one litre per passenger, but rules vary and some airports are changing their screening, so check the current rules for every airport on your route.
For checked baggage, full-size bottles are allowed, but bag them all the same. Use a heavy-duty freezer bag rather than a thin sandwich bag. For anything particularly messy, such as hair oil, ghee or pickles from home, double bag and wrap the bag in a plastic carrier.
Keep your cabin liquids bag at the very top of your carry-on or in an outside pocket, so you can lift it out at security in one movement without unpacking anything else. A slim, transparent toiletry pouch with a zip lasts far longer than single-use zip bags and looks tidier on the security tray.
Pack the toiletry case in the right spot
Place the toiletry case upright at the wheel end of a trolley, in a corner, with bottles standing on their bases. Keep it away from folded clothes and especially from silk, leather or electronics. In a duffle, stand it in an end pocket or at one end of the main compartment, separated from clothes by a packing cube.
A structured, wipeable toiletry or vanity case is worth the investment. Lined with water-resistant fabric or PU, it contains any leak, wipes clean and protects bottles from being crushed. Hanging toiletry bags are useful in small hotel bathrooms; look for one with a waterproof base.
On the return journey, check that any bottles you opened during the trip are closed tightly and resealed with fresh film. Hotel toiletries in sachets and mini bottles are notorious leakers; if you want to keep them, put them in their own zip bag, separate from everything else.
What to carry on and what to check
In your cabin bag, carry only what you need in transit: a small moisturiser, lip balm, hand sanitiser within limits, contact lens solution and essential medicines. Medicines in liquid form and baby food are often allowed in larger quantities, but carry prescriptions and check with your airline or airport.
Everything else goes in checked luggage. Full-size shampoo, body wash, perfume and sunscreen are safer in the hold, provided they are sealed and bagged. If you are flying cabin-only, decant, use solids, or plan to buy toiletries at your destination.
Many travellers forget liquids hiding in plain sight: a water bottle with a little left in it, a hand cream in a coat pocket, a pot of honey bought as a gift. Empty or move these before security. A reusable water bottle can usually be filled after the security check.
Perfume, alcohol and duty free
Perfume bottles leak at the atomiser. Wrap the neck with cling film under the cap, place the bottle in a sock and then inside a shoe or the centre of a rolled sweater. For travel, a small refillable atomiser saves weight and avoids risking a full bottle.
Duty-free liquids bought at the airport usually come in a sealed tamper-evident bag. Keep it sealed with the receipt visible until you reach your final destination if you have a connecting flight, as some transit airports may confiscate opened bags. Check with your airline for your route.
Mistakes that cause leaks
Overfilling bottles, using flip-top caps, packing liquids on their sides, placing the toiletry bag under heavy items and forgetting a second zip bag are the most common errors. Another is mixing liquids with electronics in the same pouch; a leaking foundation bottle can ruin a phone charger.
Get the system right once and it will serve you for years. Explore our travel bags edit for luxury suitcases and structured vanity cases with water-resistant linings, and keep a sleek handbag for in-flight essentials so your liquids bag is always within reach at security.
If the worst happens and something leaks, act quickly. Remove affected clothes, rinse oily stains with cold water and a drop of dish soap, and let the toiletry case dry fully before repacking. Keep a few spare zip bags in the case for exactly this situation.
