How to pack woollens for travel, briefly
To pack woollens for travel, fold structured pieces like coats and blazers along their seams, roll soft knits and thermals, wrap delicate shawls in tissue or a cotton pouch, and keep everything in breathable cubes away from liquids. Wool needs air, protection from snags and space to keep its shape, so avoid crushing it in vacuum bags for long periods.
Indian travellers carry woollens more often than they think: winter trips to Shimla, Manali and Kashmir, December holidays in Europe, business trips to Delhi in January, flights where cabins feel cold, and even weddings in Rajasthan where nights turn chilly. Pashminas, merino jumpers, wool-blend trousers and tailored coats all need slightly different handling. This guide walks through each.
The key principle is that wool is resilient but not indestructible. Its fibres have a natural crimp that springs back after folding, which is why a merino jumper can be rolled tight and look fine after a shake. But wool also dislikes heat, friction and prolonged pressure, all of which luggage can supply in abundance. Good packing works with the fibre's strengths and protects it from those three stresses.

Know your wool types
Merino is fine, soft and relatively crease-resistant, which makes it one of the best travel fibres. Lambswool and Shetland are thicker and bulkier. Cashmere and pashmina are delicate and prone to pilling and snagging. Wool blends with polyester or nylon are more robust and recover their shape quickly. Boiled wool and felted coats hold structure but crease along sharp folds.
Understanding the fabric helps you decide whether to fold or roll. Fine knits roll beautifully. Tailored coats and blazers should be folded. Shawls do best rolled loosely around tissue. Anything with embellishment, like an embroidered Kashmiri shawl, should be turned inside out and wrapped.
Check the care label before you pack. A wool-polyester blend coat can tolerate a quick steam in a hotel, while a pure cashmere wrap may need gentler handling. Knowing in advance what each piece needs tells you whether to pack a lint brush, a fabric comb, a mini steamer or simply a few wide hangers in your case.
Folding a wool coat
Turn the coat inside out, which protects the outer surface and the buttons. Hold it by the shoulders, push one shoulder into the other so the lining faces out, then fold the sleeves in and fold the coat in half or thirds lengthwise, depending on your case. Lay it flat on top of other clothes, ideally in a hard-shell case that does not press down on it.
If you have a garment bag or a suitcase with a suiter compartment, hang the coat there instead. Better still, wear the coat on the flight and carry a lighter jacket in the luggage. A long camel or black coat is the most valuable item to keep crease-free, as creases on wool can take a day of hanging to fall out.
Rolling sweaters and thermals
Lay the sweater face down, fold the sleeves across the back, fold the sides in to form a long rectangle and roll from the hem towards the neck. Rolling avoids hard creases and makes it easy to see each item inside a cube. Merino tops and thermals roll into tight cylinders the size of a water bottle.
Pack rolled knits side by side in a medium cube. Compression cubes are fine for a short trip, but avoid compressing cashmere hard for days; it can flatten the knit. Place heavier knits near the wheels of a trolley so the case stays stable when upright.
When packing knits and thermals together, separate them by weight. Put light merino and silk thermals in one cube and heavier knits in another. This keeps the fine pieces from being crushed and makes it easier to grab a base layer quickly in the morning without unpacking the entire case. Label cubes by colour if you like to stay organised on longer trips.
Packing pashminas and delicate shawls
Pashmina and fine wool shawls snag on zips, Velcro and jewellery. Fold the shawl lengthwise into a long strip, lay a sheet of acid-free tissue on it and roll loosely. Slide the roll into a cotton or muslin pouch, never a sealed plastic bag for long periods, as wool needs to breathe. Keep it away from shoe bags and toiletries.
For a wedding or festive trip where you will carry an expensive shawl, consider keeping it in your cabin luggage or a tote. It is light, it can double as a warm layer on the flight, and you avoid the risk of a delayed checked bag.
Moth and moisture protection
Moths and carpet beetles love wool, especially if it is stored dirty. Wash or dry-clean woollens before packing them for long trips or storage. Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets to your wool cube; they deter moths and keep a fresh smell. Avoid strong naphthalene balls inside luggage; the odour clings to clothes and fabric linings.
Moisture is the other enemy. Wool can absorb a lot of water vapour before it feels damp, and then smell musty. A couple of silica gel sachets in each wool cube help on humid flights and train journeys. Never pack damp woollens; dry them fully at the hotel first.
If you are travelling from a humid Indian city in the monsoon or post-monsoon to a cold destination, take extra care. Woollens stored at home through the rains may already carry moisture. Air them in sunlight for a few hours before packing, check for musty smells and treat any spots before the trip, rather than sealing a problem into your luggage.
Which luggage protects woollens best
Hard-shell polycarbonate cases protect structured coats from being crushed under other bags in the hold. A 50:50 split case lets you keep woollens in one half and shoes and toiletries in the other. Soft cases are more forgiving for bulk but can press creases into a coat if overstuffed. Linings in smooth polyester are less likely to snag knits than rough fabrics.
For business trips to cold cities, a garment bag or a trolley with a built-in suiter keeps a wool blazer and trousers smooth. Many premium brands, including Samsonite, Tumi and Delsey, offer such features. Check warranty and repair terms before buying, as these vary by line.
For long train journeys, such as the overnight run from Delhi to Jammu or Kalka, keep one warm layer and a shawl in a tote at your berth. Train compartments can get very cold at night in winter, and you do not want to unzip a stuffed case under the berth. A soft wool shawl is light, warm and easily packed back into the tote in the morning.
Unpacking and refreshing on arrival
Unpack woollens first. Hang coats on wide hangers and shake out knits. Hang them in the bathroom while you shower; steam relaxes wool fibres and releases light creases. A travel steamer on the wool setting works too, but hold it a few centimetres away and never press directly, which can create shine.
Air worn woollens overnight instead of washing them daily. Brush coats with a soft clothes brush to remove lint and dust. If a knit pills, use a fabric comb gently. These habits keep woollens looking new across a long winter trip.
A small lint roller or a natural-bristle clothes brush deserves a permanent place in your winter travel kit. It removes fluff picked up from airline blankets and car seats in seconds and keeps dark wool coats looking sharp in photos.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not hang heavy knitted jumpers for long; they stretch. Do not store woollens in plastic for months. Do not pack perfume or liquids near wool, because a leak can stain permanently. Do not compress a structured coat, and do not iron cashmere directly. And do not pack more woollens than you need; two or three good layers outperform a pile of heavy sweaters.
With careful folding, rolling and breathable storage, woollens travel well and arrive looking as good as they left. Pair them with luggage that offers structure and smooth linings, and your winter wardrobe will last many seasons.
