How to read a perfume label in brief
Learning how to read a perfume label helps you know exactly what you are buying. The key details are the fragrance name, the concentration (such as eau de parfum or eau de toilette), the volume in ml, the ingredient list, the batch code, the manufacturer or importer details and, in India, the MRP and other legally required information.
These details appear on the bottle and the outer box, usually on the base or back. Reading them takes a minute and can save you from buying the wrong version, a tester you did not want, or an outright fake. It also helps you compare prices fairly when shopping on Amazon.in or in stores.
This guide walks through each part of a typical luxury perfume label in plain language, without technical jargon.

Name, brand and flanker versions
The front shows the brand and fragrance name. Many fragrances come in several versions, called flankers, with words like Intense, Absolu, Elixir, Le Parfum, Eau Fraiche or Sport added. These are different perfumes, not just stronger or lighter copies, and they can smell quite different from the original.
When buying online, match the full name exactly, including any extra words. A listing for a popular perfume can sometimes show an image of one version but describe another. If in doubt, check the brand's official website for the exact name and bottle design.
Also check spelling and logo carefully. Counterfeit products sometimes have small errors in fonts, accents or spelling, which are easy to miss at a glance.
Discovery sets, travel sprays and miniatures carry their own labels too. These are usually reduced versions of the full bottle information and can be a smart way to try a scent before buying a full size.
Concentration: EDP, EDT, parfum and more
The concentration usually appears near the bottom of the front label or on the box: parfum or extrait de parfum, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, eau de cologne or eau fraiche. This tells you roughly how strong the fragrance is and how it is likely to behave.
Parfum is the most concentrated, then EDP, EDT, cologne and eau fraiche. Some products labelled body mist, hair mist or fragrance mist are much lighter. Exact percentages are rarely printed and not standardised, so use the term as a general guide rather than a precise figure.
Make sure the concentration matches the price. A suspiciously cheap listing for an EDP may actually be an EDT or a mist of the same name.
Also notice whether the label says spray, splash or roll-on. Spray perfumes are the norm in luxury fragrance, while splash bottles and roll-ons are more common with colognes, oils and attars. The format affects how much you apply each time.
Volume, MRP and legal details in India
The volume is shown in ml and sometimes fluid ounces. Common sizes are 30, 50, 75, 90 and 100 ml, plus small travel sprays and minis. Compare price per ml rather than the total price when deciding which size is better value.
Packaged goods sold in India generally need certain details under legal metrology rules, such as MRP inclusive of taxes, net quantity, the name and address of the manufacturer or importer, the country of origin, the month and year of manufacture or import, and customer care information. Requirements can be detailed, so check with the seller if something looks missing.
If a box has no importer sticker, or the details look hand-written or poorly printed, ask questions before buying. Legitimate imported perfumes usually carry a clear importer label.
Some labels also mention refills, eco-refill bottles or refillable sprays. Luxury houses increasingly offer refills at a lower price per ml, which can be good value if you have found a signature scent and want to keep your original bottle.
The ingredient list and allergens
The ingredient list usually begins with alcohol (often shown as alcohol denat.), followed by parfum or fragrance, water (aqua) and other components. Many labels then list specific fragrance substances such as limonene, linalool, citral, geraniol, citronellol, coumarin or eugenol. These are common aroma compounds and some are known potential allergens.
Their presence is normal and does not mean the perfume is unsafe. Labelling helps people with known sensitivities avoid specific substances. If you have a known allergy, compare the list against what your dermatologist has advised.
Some labels also list colourants, UV filters or antioxidants that protect the fragrance. Do not expect to see the full formula; fragrance houses keep their exact compositions confidential.
Perfume oils and attars may not contain alcohol at all and might list a carrier oil instead. These behave differently on skin, often wearing closer and longer, and their labels can look quite different from typical EDPs.
Batch codes and what they tell you
A batch code is a short series of letters and numbers printed or etched on the bottle base and the box, identifying when and where that lot was produced. Matching codes on bottle and box are a good sign. Mismatched or missing codes are a reason for caution.
Some fragrance communities use online batch code checkers to estimate a production date, but these tools are unofficial and not always accurate. Treat any result as a rough indication, and rely on the seller's reputation and packaging quality as well.
Batch codes also matter if a fragrance has been reformulated, since enthusiasts sometimes prefer older batches. For most buyers, the main use is checking authenticity and freshness.
If a batch code looks printed on a sticker rather than etched or printed directly, or appears scratched off, be cautious, as removing codes is a common practice in grey-market or counterfeit stock.
Symbols on perfume packaging
Perfume boxes often carry small symbols. A flame icon indicates the product is flammable, which is why you should keep perfume away from heat and open flame. An open jar symbol with a number such as 36M shows the period after opening, in months, during which the product is expected to remain at its best.
Recycling symbols, the e mark next to the volume, and warnings like avoid contact with eyes or for external use only are also common. Some brands add symbols indicating sustainably sourced packaging or refillable bottles.
Do not panic if your perfume is older than the period-after-opening figure. Many perfumes last much longer if stored well, but they can gradually change in smell, especially the fresh top notes.
Many boxes also carry a barcode, which retailers use for stock control. A barcode alone does not prove authenticity, since counterfeiters copy them, but a missing barcode on a supposedly retail box is unusual.
Some perfumes also show a best-before or manufacturing date directly. If not, the importer label in India often shows the month and year of import or manufacture.
Reading online listings like a label
When you shop on Amazon.in, the product page becomes your label. Check that the title includes the brand, full fragrance name, concentration and volume, and that the images match the official bottle design. Zoom in on box photos to see the concentration, ml and importer sticker where shown.
Read the seller's name and ratings, not just the product rating. Fulfilment details, return policies and the seller's history matter for luxury perfume, since policies vary and fakes tend to appear through unknown sellers offering unusual discounts.
After delivery, compare what arrived with what was listed: same concentration, same size, matching batch codes on bottle and box, clean cellophane and an importer label. If anything differs, contact the seller and use the platform's support options promptly.
Tester labels, mini sizes and red flags
Testers are often labelled not for sale or demonstration, and may come in plain boxes or without caps. They contain the same fragrance but are intended for store use. Buying testers from unknown sellers carries risk, as fakes are often disguised as testers.
Red flags include prices far below typical retail, blurry printing, spelling mistakes, loose or wobbly caps, cloudy liquid, missing importer details and mismatched batch codes. Genuine luxury packaging tends to feel solid, with crisp printing and neat cellophane.
Buy from brand stores, authorised retailers and reputed sellers, and keep the box and invoice. Browse our perfume section, and read more buying guides on the blog before your next purchase.
