How to remove stains from jeans: general rules
To remove stains from jeans, act quickly, blot instead of rubbing, test any product on an inside seam first, and treat the stain from the back of the fabric so it is pushed out rather than deeper in. Use cold water for most stains, because hot water can set protein stains like blood and sweat. Treat, rinse, then wash inside out on a cold cycle and air dry; never iron or tumble dry until the stain is fully gone.
Dark denim adds one more rule: avoid bleach and strong whitening powders, which leave pale patches. For white and ecru jeans, you have more options, including oxygen-based stain removers. Below are step-by-step fixes for the stains Indian households deal with most.
Always check that a stain is fully gone before drying. Wet denim hides marks, so look closely once the area is damp but not soaking, or let a small section air dry and check. If you can still see a shadow, treat again before putting the jeans in the machine or in the sun.

Oil and grease stains
Oil stains from pakoras, pickle, hair oil or bike chains are common on jeans. First blot excess oil with a tissue. Sprinkle talcum powder, cornflour or baby powder over the stain and leave it for at least 30 minutes to absorb the oil, then brush it off.
Next, apply a drop of liquid dishwashing soap, which is designed to cut grease, and work it in gently with your fingertips or a soft toothbrush. Leave it for 10 minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water from the back. Repeat if needed, then wash as usual. For old oil stains, repeat the powder and soap steps two or three times before washing.
For bike chain grease or machine oil, which are darker and more stubborn, apply a small amount of liquid detergent directly and let it sit for an hour before rinsing. A pre-wash stain remover made for grease also works. Repeat until no shadow remains before drying the jeans.
Sesame and mustard oil from pickles and cooking are among the most common stains in Indian homes. They spread quickly into denim, so treat them within the hour if you can. Even a quick sprinkle of talc while you finish your meal makes the later clean-up far easier.
Haldi and curry stains
Turmeric stains are stubborn, especially on white or light jeans, because the pigment binds quickly. Scrape off any food, then rinse from the back with cold water. Apply liquid detergent or dish soap and let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse again.
The secret weapon is sunlight, used carefully. On white and light jeans, after washing, dry the stained area in direct sun; UV light breaks down curcumin and the yellow often fades remarkably. Do this only for light denim, since sun can fade dark jeans unevenly. A paste of baking soda and water left for 30 minutes also helps lift remaining colour.
Avoid scrubbing haldi stains hard, which spreads the pigment. Work from the outside of the stain inwards with gentle dabbing. On dark denim, haldi stains are less visible but can leave a greenish tint; a detergent soak and a second wash usually lift them completely.
Ink and pen stains
Place a folded paper towel under the stain. Dab rubbing alcohol or a hand sanitiser that contains alcohol onto the ink with a cotton ball, working from the outside in. The ink transfers to the paper towel; move to a clean section as it does. Rinse and wash.
Ballpoint ink responds well to alcohol. Gel and marker inks may need several rounds. Test alcohol on an inside seam first on dark jeans, because it can lift a little dye.
Sketch pen and highlighter ink, common in college and office bags, respond well to alcohol too. If a pen leaked in your pocket and went through the wash, check the drum and other clothes. Treat each spot individually with alcohol before washing everything again in cold water.
Permanent marker is the hardest ink to remove. Try rubbing alcohol or a hand sanitiser repeatedly, blotting with a fresh paper towel each time. It may fade rather than vanish completely, so consider covering a stubborn mark with a small embroidered patch, which turns a flaw into a design feature.
Lipstick, kajal and makeup
Lipstick and kajal are oily and pigmented. Scrape off any excess with a blunt knife. Dab micellar water or makeup remover on the stain with a cotton pad, then apply a little dish soap and work it in. Rinse with cold water and wash.
For foundation, a drop of shampoo works surprisingly well. For sindoor, which is very pigmented, shake off the powder dry first before any water touches it, then treat with detergent and cold water.
Mehendi stains are a festive season hazard. Dried henna paste should be brushed off when completely dry. The orange stain left behind is a dye and is difficult to remove fully; dish soap, a little lemon juice on light jeans and a sunny drying spot can fade it considerably.
Mud, sweat, blood and food
Mud: let it dry completely, brush off as much as possible, then treat the remaining mark with liquid detergent and wash. Monsoon mud splashes on hems usually lift this way. Sweat stains and yellowing on waistbands: soak in cold water with a little detergent and two spoons of baking soda or white vinegar for an hour, then wash.
Blood: always cold water only. Rinse from the back, then dab with hydrogen peroxide on light jeans or salt and cold water on dark jeans. Chocolate, tea and coffee: rinse with cold water, apply detergent and let it sit before washing. Ghee and butter: treat like oil.
Grass stains, common after picnics and outdoor festivals, respond well to a little liquid detergent worked in gently and left for 15 minutes. On white jeans, a paste of baking soda and water helps lift the green tinge. Rinse and wash in cold water.
Paint, gum and wax
Water-based paint: rinse while wet with cold water and detergent. Dried acrylic is very difficult; try rubbing alcohol and gentle scraping. Chewing gum: freeze the jeans in a plastic bag for an hour, then scrape the hardened gum off with a blunt knife.
Candle wax from Diwali diyas: let the wax harden, scrape off what you can, then place a paper towel over the spot and press with a warm iron. The towel absorbs melted wax. Treat any oily residue with dish soap.
Nail polish is tricky. Blot, never rub, then dab acetone-free remover first on a hidden seam to check it does not lift dye. On white denim, regular nail polish remover can work. On dark denim, it may leave a pale mark, so take valuable jeans to a dry cleaner instead.
Special care for white jeans and dark jeans
White jeans: an oxygen-based stain remover soak, made according to pack instructions, is effective for most stains and general dullness. Never mix products. Sun drying helps whiten. Dark jeans: stick to dish soap, detergent, talc and alcohol tested first, and dry in shade.
If a stain survives, do not put the jeans in a dryer or iron them, because heat sets stains permanently. Repeat the treatment, or take them to a dry cleaner and tell them what caused the stain.
Keep a small stain kit at home: talc, dish soap, rubbing alcohol, an old soft toothbrush, white cloths and an oxygen-based stain remover for whites. With these on hand, almost every jeans stain can be treated within minutes, which is when they are easiest to remove.
