Fakes have become very good at the first glance. Many copies arrive in boxes that look convincing on a phone screen, with fonts and logos lifted from real packaging. What they rarely get right is the full set of small, expensive details that a luxury house controls tightly, and the juice itself, which is where the money in a real fragrance actually goes.

Discounts of 20 to 30 percent happen during big sales and on older launches, but a brand-new, much-hyped release at 70 percent off is a warning sign, not a bargain.

Look at who is actually selling. On marketplaces, the product page and the seller are two different things. Check the seller name, its ratings over time, whether it is the brand's own store or an authorised distributor, and what its return policy says about opened fragrance. Sellers with no history, very new accounts or ratings full of complaints about smell or longevity deserve caution.

Read low-star reviews first. Comments like "smells like alcohol", "vanished in twenty minutes" or "box different from last time" are more useful than a hundred five-star ratings with no detail.

Cellophane and box: the first physical clues

Genuine luxury perfume boxes are usually wrapped in tight, clear cellophane with neat, narrow seams that are heat-sealed and often folded with precision. Fakes commonly use loose or wrinkled wrap, thick glue lines, or seams that look melted. Pressing on a genuine box rarely makes the wrap bag or crinkle loosely.

Now examine the box. Real packaging is made from rigid, good-quality card with crisp edges. Printing is sharp, colours are even, and embossing or foil work lines up exactly with the printed areas. On copies you often see slightly fuzzy text, uneven spacing, spelling mistakes in ingredient lists or French phrases, and foil that is a touch off-centre.

Look inside too. Many houses use a moulded card insert that holds the bottle snugly. A bottle rattling around in a loose box, or sitting in cheap foam, is not proof of a fake on its own, but it adds to the tally. Check that the box lists the volume, concentration, an ingredient list, and the importer or marketer details required for products sold in India.

Batch codes: matching box and bottle

Almost every genuine perfume carries a batch code, a short string of letters and numbers printed or etched on the base of the box and on the bottle itself, usually on the bottom or on a sticker. The two should match. A missing code, a code only on the box, or two codes that clearly differ are among the strongest signs of a counterfeit or a repackaged bottle.

On real bottles the code is usually laser-etched or neatly printed and does not rub off easily. On fakes it may be a cheap sticker, printed in a different font, or smudged. Some people decode batch codes using online batch-check tools to estimate a manufacturing date. These tools can help, but they are not official verification, and a matching code does not guarantee authenticity because counterfeiters sometimes copy real codes.

Bottle, cap and sprayer quality

Luxury houses spend heavily on glass. Genuine bottles tend to have smooth, even glass with no bubbles, clean mould lines and engraved or printed logos that are sharp at the edges. Hold the bottle against the light: wavy glass, visible seams or a logo that looks slightly blurred are worth noting.

The cap should fit firmly and feel weighty if the design is metal or a heavy resin. Magnetic caps should snap cleanly. Cheap, light plastic where you expect zinc alloy, or a cap that wobbles, is a classic giveaway. Look at the tube inside the bottle too. On many genuine perfumes the dip tube is thin, nearly invisible and cut to the right length. Thick, cloudy tubes that curl or stop well short of the base are common on copies.

Finally, the sprayer. A genuine atomiser usually gives a fine, even mist. Fakes often spit, squirt in a stream or leak around the collar.

Juice colour, clarity and fill level

Look at the liquid itself. Genuine perfume should be clear with no floating particles or cloudiness. Colour varies by fragrance and even slightly between batches, so do not panic over a small shade difference compared with a photo online. Very bright, artificial-looking colour, sediment, or a fill level noticeably lower than usual on a sealed bottle are reasons to pause.

If you own a genuine bottle of the same perfume, compare them side by side in daylight. Real batches can vary a little, but the overall tone, viscosity and clarity should be close.

The scent test: opening, heart and dry-down

The biggest difference between genuine and fake perfume shows up over time on skin. Counterfeits often try to copy the opening, because that is what buyers judge first. Many then collapse into a flat, sweet or harsh base within thirty to sixty minutes, or smell strongly of alcohol from the start.

Spray once on clean skin, not clothes, and note how it smells after ten minutes, one hour and four hours. A genuine EDP usually evolves: top notes fade, the heart opens, and the base settles into something smooth. A fake tends to stay one-dimensional or turn sour. If your skin itches, burns or turns red, stop using it immediately; counterfeit fragrances can contain unknown or unsafe ingredients.

Fake, dupe, tester or grey market: know the difference

A dupe or inspired-by perfume is sold openly under its own name and only claims to smell similar; it is legal when it does not copy branding. A tester is a genuine bottle made for store counters, often in plain packaging. Grey-market stock is genuine product imported outside the brand's official distribution, sometimes with codes removed.

Each of these comes with different trade-offs. A dupe is honest about what it is. Grey-market and tester bottles can be genuine but may lack warranty-style support, have uncertain storage history and limited returns. Only a fake is a straightforward deception. When a seller is vague about which category their bottle falls into, that vagueness itself is information worth acting on.

If you are paying a genuine luxury price, you deserve a genuine retail product with a clear invoice and a seller who stands behind it.

Stop using it, photograph the box, wrap, batch codes and bottle, and keep the invoice. Contact the seller and the marketplace quickly, because return windows for beauty products are short and policies typically vary by seller. Explain clearly what you found, with photos. Leave an honest review so others can avoid the same seller.

To avoid the problem altogether, buy from brand stores, well-known beauty retailers, authorised distributors or marketplace listings sold by established sellers with long track records. A trusted source is still the single best authenticity check.
