How to Store T-Shirts in Monsoon: Stop Mildew & Smell

The essential monsoon rule

To store t-shirts in monsoon, make sure every tee is bone dry before folding, keep the almirah aired and lined, use moisture absorbers like silica gel or charcoal, and avoid packing clothes tightly. Mildew and musty smell need moisture and stillness, so dryness and airflow are your two defences.

From June to September, cities like Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata, Kochi and Guwahati see weeks of high humidity. Tees that dry slowly indoors, then get folded slightly damp, are the main source of that stale, sour smell. Here is how to stop it.

Musty smell is more than an annoyance. Mildew can leave permanent spots on fabric and weaken fibres over time, and it can trigger allergies for some people. A few simple habits keep your whole wardrobe safe.

Drying clothes indoors in monsoon

Spin tees on the highest safe spin speed for their fabric to remove as much water as possible. A second spin cycle helps.

Dry indoors near a fan, open window or in a ventilated balcony. Space clothes apart so air can circulate. A ceiling fan running for a few hours makes a big difference.

Use a foldable drying rack rather than draping over doors and chairs. Hang tees on wide hangers from the hem or drape them over rack bars at the waist.

Avoid drying clothes in a closed bedroom. It raises indoor humidity and can encourage mould on walls.

If you have space, a small dehumidifier in a closed room speeds up drying and protects the almirah too. Run it while clothes dry, then air the room.

Wash smaller loads more often during the rains. A small load spins more effectively and dries faster than a large one, which reduces the chance of musty smells.

Add half a cup of white vinegar to the final rinse to reduce bacteria and odour. The smell fades as the clothes dry.

Check that tees are truly dry

Feel the thickest parts: seams, neck bands, cuffs and hems. If they feel cool, they are still damp.

Heavyweight oversized tees and interlock fabrics take longer. Give them extra time or a quick iron to finish drying.

Ironing or steaming briefly before folding also kills some odour-causing bacteria and drives out residual moisture.

Never fold clothes straight off the rack in the evening without checking.

If you are short on drying time, iron the thickest parts of tees, like collars and hems, with a medium-hot iron to drive out the last moisture before folding.

Smell is another test. A tee that smells faintly sour straight off the line was dried too slowly and needs a rewash with vinegar before folding.

Prepare your almirah

Before monsoon, empty your almirah, wipe shelves with a cloth dipped in a mild vinegar solution and let them air dry completely.

Line shelves with newspaper or plain cotton fabric, which absorbs some moisture. Avoid plastic sheets that trap dampness.

Place moisture absorbers inside: silica gel sachets, activated charcoal bags, or a bowl of rock salt or chalk. Replace or dry them regularly.

Neem leaves, cloves, camphor or cedar balls help keep insects away and add a fresh scent.

If your almirah is against an outer wall that gets damp in rain, move it a few inches away from the wall to allow air circulation behind it.

If your home is very humid, iron or steam heavy tees before storing them for the season. This removes residual moisture and helps protect them from mildew in long-term storage.

Storage habits that prevent mildew

Do not overpack shelves. Leave gaps for air movement.

Open the almirah daily for a few minutes when it is not raining, and run a fan nearby. On a sunny monsoon break, air clothes outside for a few hours.

Store worn-but-not-dirty tees separately in a basket rather than returning them to the shelf, since they carry body moisture.

Store off-season heavy tees in breathable cotton bags rather than plastic boxes.

A small bowl of baking soda on a shelf absorbs odours. Replace it every few weeks, and reuse the old baking soda for cleaning sinks.

Store tees you wear often on the most accessible shelves so you are not constantly digging through stacks. Less handling means less moisture from hands and less disorder.

Keep a breathable laundry basket rather than a closed plastic one for used clothes. Closed bins trap damp and smell within a day during the monsoon.

Remove musty smell from clothes

Soak smelly tees in a bucket of water with one cup of white vinegar for 30 minutes, then wash as usual.

Add half a cup of baking soda to the wash for extra odour removal. Dry thoroughly, ideally in sunlight when it appears.

For mildew spots on white cotton, apply lemon juice and salt, then dry in the sun. For colours, use an oxygen bleach soak following product instructions.

If the smell returns after washing, check that the washing machine itself is clean. Run an empty hot cycle with vinegar or a drum cleaner monthly.

Wipe the inside of almirah doors and drawers once a month during monsoon. Condensation often forms on these surfaces and can transfer moisture to clothes.

Travel and hostel tips for monsoon

In hostels and PGs with limited drying space, wash tees more often in small batches so each load dries quickly. A small foldable rack near a window or fan helps.

Pack quick-dry tees when travelling to Goa, Kerala or the Northeast in the rains. Roll them in your bag and use a separate pouch for damp clothes so they do not affect dry ones.

Carry a few silica gel sachets in your suitcase and wardrobe at hotels.

After a trip, wash all worn clothes immediately rather than leaving them in the bag, which quickly develops a damp smell.

Rinse off rainwater and mud from tees as soon as you get home. Rainwater can carry dust and pollutants that leave marks if allowed to dry into the fabric.

Keep a set of indoor tees just for home during the rainy season, so your favourite outdoor tees have more time to dry between wears.

A few minutes spent checking dryness and airing storage each week prevents almost every monsoon wardrobe problem.

Signs your storage needs attention

A faint sour smell when you open the almirah means moisture is building up. Air it out, replace moisture absorbers and check for damp clothes.

Small black, grey or green spots on fabric indicate mildew. Remove affected clothes and treat them immediately.

White powdery patches on wooden shelves or walls suggest mould. Clean with a vinegar solution and let the area dry completely before restocking.

If clothes feel cool and slightly damp even after drying, your room humidity is high. Use a fan, dehumidifier or keep windows open on dry days.

Tees with a light cotton-polyester blend are especially handy for monsoon office commutes, because they resist creasing and still look neat if they get a little damp on the way.

Choose monsoon-friendly tees

Lighter fabrics, 140 to 170 GSM, dry faster. Cotton-polyester blends, modal and bamboo dry faster than heavy cotton.

Darker colours hide splashes and mud. Relaxed fits dry more quickly than tight ones.

Pair quick-dry tees with cropped trousers or shorts and waterproof sandals or sneakers for rainy commutes.

Rust spots from metal hangers or almirah hinges can also appear in humid weather. Use plastic or wooden hangers and keep metal surfaces dry.
