How to stretch tight jeans: the short answer
To stretch tight jeans, dampen the tight area with lukewarm water, put the jeans on and move around with squats, lunges and leg lifts until they dry, or pull the damp waistband across a hanger or chair back and leave it overnight. Cotton fibres relax when wet and set in their new shape as they dry, which can gain you a little room at the waist, hips or thighs.
Realistically, home stretching gives a small gain, enough to make snug jeans comfortable or close a button that just about meets. If jeans are a full size small, it is better to exchange them or ask a tailor about letting out seams.
Work in front of a mirror and check your progress after each session by sitting down in the jeans. Comfort while seated is the real test, because jeans that feel fine standing may still dig into the waist on a long bus or metro ride, or while sitting cross-legged at a family function.

Why jeans feel tight and which ones stretch
Brand-new jeans, rigid cotton jeans and jeans fresh from a hot wash usually feel tightest. Rigid denim with 100 percent cotton relaxes the most with wear and stretching. Stretch denim with elastane already has give, but it can also snap back, so stretching works only for a while unless you repeat it.
Some tightness after washing is normal. Most jeans loosen by a noticeable amount after an hour of wear, so before you start stretching, wear them around the house for an afternoon and see how they feel.
Check the fabric label too. Jeans with polyester or very high elastane content resist stretching, while cotton-rich jeans respond better to the methods below. If the tag says 100 percent cotton, you have the most room to work with, and the stretch you create is likely to last longer.
Method 1: spray, wear and squat
Fill a spray bottle with lukewarm water. Put the jeans on, button them if you can, and spray the tight areas until damp but not dripping, usually the waist, hips, thighs or knees. Now move: do 10 to 15 deep squats, lunges on each leg, sit cross-legged on the floor, and walk around. Keep moving for 20 to 30 minutes and then keep the jeans on until they are dry.
This works well for thighs and seat, the two places women most often find jeans too tight, and is gentle on the fabric. In humid monsoon weather drying can take longer, so sit under a fan.
If you do not want to wear damp jeans, a gentler version is to wear them dry for a few hours of active housework, such as cleaning, cooking or a short yoga session in them. Body heat and movement soften the cotton and loosen tight areas a little, without any water at all.
Method 2: stretch the waistband with a hanger
For a waist that will not button, dampen the waistband with warm water. Hold both sides and pull it firmly outwards a few times. Then place a sturdy wooden hanger, a ruler or a thick book inside the waistband, wedged so the band is pulled taut, and leave it overnight to dry.
Some people buy a waistband extender or a jeans stretcher tool made for this. A cheaper quick fix is a button extender, a small elastic loop that attaches to your button and gives you an extra inch or so while you decide whether to alter the jeans.
If the jeans close but feel tight while sitting, put them on damp and sit cross-legged on the floor for ten minutes, then on a chair for another ten. Sitting stretches the back rise and seat, which are the areas that cause discomfort at a desk or on long drives.
Method 3: warm soak then wear
For an all-over stretch, soak the jeans in a tub of lukewarm water for 15 minutes, gently squeeze out excess water, then lie on the bed and put them on. Wear them for an hour or two while they dry, moving often. As with the shrinking trick, the fabric moulds to your shape.
Avoid hot water for this method, because hot water can shrink cotton, which is the opposite of what you want.
Another gentle option is to wear tight jeans for short periods over several days, each time doing a few squats and lunges. This breaks them in gradually and avoids damaging the fabric. It works well for new rigid jeans, which almost always feel tightest in the first week.
How to stretch jeans length
Length is the hardest direction to stretch. Dampen the hems, then pull the legs firmly downwards and hang them with clips from the hem, with a little weight such as a heavy book clipped to the waist. Leave them to dry. You might gain a small amount, especially on rigid cotton.
If jeans are clearly too short, other options look better: cuff them deliberately for an ankle-length look, or ask a tailor to let down the hem if there is spare fabric folded inside. Many jeans have very little hem allowance, so check first.
When to go to a tailor instead
A local tailor can often let out the centre back seam by an inch or so if there is seam allowance, or add a small denim panel under the back yoke. For the thighs, letting out the outer side seam is sometimes possible, though it can show a faint line where the original stitching was.
Take your jeans in clean and ironed, wear the shoes you would usually wear with them, and be clear about where they feel tight. This costs little and gives a reliable result.
When you visit the tailor, ask them to check the seam allowance first. Many budget jeans are cut with very narrow allowances, leaving almost nothing to let out. If that is the case, a gusset panel or simply passing the jeans on to a friend may be the more sensible choice.
Stretching trouble spots and keeping the extra room
Thighs: after spraying, do slow side lunges and deep sumo squats, holding each for a few seconds. Then sit cross-legged on the floor, which stretches the inner thigh panel. Calves on skinny jeans: spray the lower legs, then sit on the floor and hug your knees to your chest, which pulls the fabric over the calves.
Hips and seat: bend forward to touch your toes several times, then sit on a low stool for a few minutes. Knees: deep squats work best. Waist: a combination of the hanger method overnight and wearing them damp for an hour the next morning usually gives the best result.
Repeat each session two or three times on different days if you need more room. Small, repeated stretches are kinder to the fabric than one aggressive attempt.
Washing usually tightens jeans again, especially if you use warm water or a dryer. To keep the room you have gained, wash stretched jeans in cold water only, skip the dryer and hang them by the waistband to dry, which uses gravity to keep length. Put them on slightly damp if they feel tight after washing, and do a few squats.
For daily comfort, look for jeans described as comfort stretch, relaxed or with an elasticated back waistband in your next purchase. High-rise jeans with a contoured waistband also sit more comfortably on curvier hips and reduce the need for stretching at all.
Mistakes that damage jeans
Avoid over-stretching stretch denim with force; the elastane can break, which shows as bubbly or shiny patches. Do not stretch jeans with heat, as heat shrinks them. And do not use fabric softener in hope of stretching; it does not make jeans larger.
Finally, consider comfort and health. Jeans that dig into the stomach after a meal or leave marks at the waist are too tight for daily wear. A better fitting pair with a slightly relaxed waist will serve you better than repeatedly fighting with a small pair.
